View Full Version : "best threads" post?

Seeing people ask the same things over and over because many are new or folks just missed something once, I wonder if someone who has been around and more importantly plans on staying around for a while would mind creating and updating a "best posts" type of thread. We could sticky it if it was a good one that helped folks. The hard part would be organizing it logically and having a little "table of contents" at the start of it that let's people know where to go inside the post to find their issue - then it's organized in groups like Gameplay tips, specific faction problems/suggestions/questions, etc.

It wouldn't necessarily help the team as much as it might help all the fans, but everyone could benefit from it somehow. Anyway, it's not something to jump right into if you aren't going to be around for a while, but some folks probably will hang around. I just saw a link to Kull's post at TWC about further limiting pirates - a way to do that - which might be a good one. That sort of stuff.

Any thoughts on something like that?

Yep would be a good thing. It would also be a very good thing if people new to the mod (and especially installing it) actually read the Bug Thread forums - it appears as if people just keep asking things that have been covered there already.

EDIT: @ TA if you could manage the list, so everything is to be found in post 1? Here's a little contribution:
1) Install Guide: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=80270
2) Why you should post a save game if you encounter a serious error: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=80870
3) Known issue - the Oasis custom battle CTD: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=81359
4) You experience a CTD during AI's turn? Make sure to install the file found here: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=81220
5) EB with BI, some links: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=74213 ; https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=75667
6) Gameplay; Ambush tactics & Historical Accurate Legion threads - in that order: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=81293 ; https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=81345

Whoever does it should make a new post (let's talk about it first before someone jumps out and does it though), so that they can alter the first post by editing. Some of it is similar to the FAQ post, but there's so much more than what should be in an FAQ that could be helpful about something like this I think.

Let's face it, so many of the questions asked are answered in the FAQ that I'd be surprised if this will help at all.

definately a good idea. There are a lot of question that are being repeated over and over. (slingers, charge values of 1, BI, etc. etc.) It would be nice to have one thread to point to.

Well, that's probably true Geof, but there are so many good threads that it would be great to have listed in a quick format, that it might be helpful. I know I just loved that thread that linked the previews - and I used it over and over.

I could do something like that, maybe.

How do I play EB with BI?
Why are slingers so powerful?
Why can't I build Roman factional MICs in Taras?
Why can't I recruit Roman infantry in Gaul?
Do hoplites really use the overhand spear attack?
Why do guys wearing just shirts have armor bonuses?
Why can't I build ships in my cities?
Why did a city suddenly become mine?
Where is the Segmenta armor?
Why do phalanxes have 1 charge bonus?
Why do skirmisher cavalry have 1 charge bonus?
Where are the "Imitation Legionaries"?
Why does Seleucia always defeat Ptolemai?
Why does Ptolemai always defeat Seleucia?
Why doesn't 'Faction X' expand ever?
Why do Roman armies always have Gallic troops in them?
When do the Roman reforms happen?
When do the Gallic reforms happen?
How do I change the reforms?
I've had the reforms, why can't I build new units?
What is the suggested difficulty level?
My game won't install (no additional info), what do I do?
My game crashed (no additional info), how do I fix it?
I just called the mod stupid and wrong, why does the team get mad at me?
Pirates are too strong.
Rebels are too strong.
Rebels are too weak.
Why does population grow so fast?
Why doesn't the enemy build balanced armies?
How do I change units size?
Why is EB so slow?
Why does it freeze on the startup screen?
Why did Belguim turn blue?
Can I reach the 'Sahara' city?
Why does the AI always attack me (usually a Saba question)?

I always like the "your mod does not work, ruined my vanilla copy, deleted all my Robbie Williams' mp3 files and now my refridgerator doesn't work" posts placed incorrectly and inconveniently in the general public forum for all to see :inquisitive:

Well it did! I tried to install Eb into the central refrigeration processing unit. It stopped working and tried to make a time machine to go back in time so it could join a Roman legion. :laugh4:

I like the idea, but personally I think that it would be more use the cull the current stickies and create a few threads that are constantly updated. There are no less than six stickies about simply installing the latest build: open beta, EB 0.8, EB 0.81, EB 0.81a, CTD fix and map.rmw. Add to this two FAQ-thread, two more threads about the 0.74 to 0.8 update, and six other stickies, and you get a bewildering amount of reading-material for a new visitor. Wouldn't it be much clearer to create a few consilidated threads and make sure these are constantly updated? Like one "Download, install and patch"-thread, one FAQ thread, one suggestions thread and one "current workgroups and helprequired" thread?

Just my two pence.

I think this link is all we need: http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting.php

Although, updating the FAQ or maybe having a separates threads that concentrates solely on gameplay quirks or team choices (e.g. the "balancing out units" thread) and another on troubleshooting would be nice (what Ludens said).

Perhaps a PDF guide for download would be a good idea as well.
