View Full Version : Query - No Cardinals promoted

I'm playing a 1.1 patch H/H French Campaign.
Most of the Cardinals have died one way or another... To the point where, due to the election of my cardinal to the Papacy (after I slit the preceding Holy Father throat :fainting: ...snigger...snigger...) there is only two cardinals left and something like more than ten empty seats...
Is it a bug ? Or is there a way to get priests elected ?
And preferably mine too

Your priest must have at least 5 piety to have a chance of being considered to become a cardinal

Your priests will get elected if they have a piety rating of 5 or higher. I have never run across a situation where there have been that many open seats.

There will always be cardinals as long as there are priests on the map.
What you have encountered, is simply a random chance thing. Just give a few turns, and provided there are more priests, the collage will fill up.
To ensure your own priests get elected, having good relations with the pope does wonders. But they'll have to have high piety.

Horetore, if all of the priest have terrible piety, no cardinals will appear. I have destroyed the college before by systematically killing every priest on the map through toggle fow and getting one uber assasin to kill everything.
Personally, I would do what I do well and build a bunch of Priest from one town without a guild and send them to Russia. WHen they get there, the low Cathlolic rate plus fast trip would mean that their Piety Rating will skyrocket and soon you will have the Mythology Guild. With that, it should be no problem getting Pope every time and that will help you in the long run.

That is why it is easier to get cardinals playing as Spain, Portugal, Venice, Sicily, Hungary, or Poland

Huh, didn't know that. Does that only apply to cardinals, or does it mean that it will stop the pope too?
Also, if the Pope is 'eliminated' each turn (ie. the first pope is killed; next turn a new one is elected and he is killed) then cardinal promotions will never trigger, as they happen only at the start of a turn in which there is not a papal election.
Could this actually eliminate the Papal faction?
No - the papal faction can never be eliminated (but you can blunt it using this method - it won't be able to launch crusades or excommunicate)

You can get close to eliminating it though.
Take out every catholic nation (If your catholic: Build no priests) (If your Muslim/Orthodox: :sweatdrop: You're done..)

As to the first point, it is a long-lasting chance happening... I'm at turn 70 now and i've only seen 1 cardinal promoted (from the Danes IIRC)... No cardinal at 5 Piety among any faction ? Will have to turn the fow off to see...
Moreover, since my first post I'm done to 1 eligible Cardinal (1 hostile Milanese) and I fear the rep hit with the PopeI will take when he gets elected.
To the second,I have a perfect standing with the Pope (participating in 3 crusades and winning two can do wonders to your standing), but how can i get my priest to improve when i've seen only one witch and two heretics in my territories during those 70 turns...
Any idea what i may have missed ?
@pevergreen : last thing I would want to do as a Catholic faction...:sweatdrop:

I remember somebody posting that he killed all the cardinals and the pope - effectively leaving the papacy in a limbus.
Without pope, no new cardinals. Without cardinals, no new pope.

You need to send them to provinces owned by the Orthodox/Muslim factions. 5 or 6 preists at once, they'll hit 5 awful fast, trust me.
But otherwise if you just keep them hanging aroun in your own lands they'll never hit 5. Thats the point, unless you send them of somwhere where they have somone to convert you'll never get to 5 piety.

Create a god squad, like ten priests are so, send them to the Holy Lands and then just watch them all become cardinals in under 15 turns

Alright... I'll go preach the faith to the heathen around the world...Spreading the word of God...
But can you find an explanation why even the AI doesn't get a Cardinal elected ?
I guess that they're just playing by the same rules as you have to.
As strange as it sounds, it does happen :laugh4:
