Heh, not meaning that question as aggresive as it sounds :beam: Im just interested in finding out why some people (like me) are still playing Rome.
Personally, I have three reasons. The first is that I love the Roman time period and there's no better game to enjoy it through! Second is that M2TW still has many problems (as Im sure you all know). And third is that it gives me an excuse to make pretentious ramblings stolen from Shakespeare :book: :laugh4:
I love M2TW but it hasn't diminished my love for Rome at all. There's my reasons :2thumbsup:

Dumped M2TW and playing RTW now for your reason #2 primarily, M2TW has some really bad problems right now, CA let that out of the oven half-baked. Now that I've experienced it and gone back to the old RTW style, it just cements in my mind the fact that there's a large number of features that CA dropped in M2TW that I sorely miss.
Also like you I find the classical period intensely interesting.

1st Reason..I am a bigger fan of the RTW time period more so than the MTW2time period.
2nd Reason..Europa Barbarorum..When a mod like this exists for MTW2...Then i'll move on..But for now...I"m more than content with my RTW and EB.
Theres a number of reasons why i still play rome, and not M2TW
My Machine cant handle M2TW  and i dont have the cash for the upgrades yet.
There are tonnes of problems with M2TW, where as Rome is patche dot perfection.
The differentation between faction line-ups makes it much more intresting.
And there's a huge amount of mods available for Rome, End of Days being my current one, though ive also gone heavily through ATW and RTG, and ive still got blue lotus to put on!
M2TW became unplayable for me. Thought I could soldier on through the bugs but as I was playing I knew this was not the way it was meant to be. So went back to Rome for my TW fix.
But Rome is still a great game. Can't see myself stop playing it any time soon, it will just get less attention.

I went back to RTW originally due to my greater relative interest in the Hellenistic Period then the Middle Ages circa the 11th century. Make no mistake I do enjoy both periods, but I'm much more drawn to the Greeks and the years before Christ than the various historical events that happened after 1 AD, and more specifically after the fall of the Roman Republic.
A second reason I'm not playing M2TW is the need to wait on patches and enhancements to the game to get completed and shipped out. My computer can handle M2TW graphically but in the interest of waiting for a more complete product it makes more sense for me to play RTW in the interim then trying to get used to an obviously incomplete M2TW product.
As a final Aside I'm not playing M2TW currently as the various patches and updates tend to change the strategies needed to win, sometimes profoundly. I remember with RTW the change between 1.1 and 1.2 entailed making entire faction strategies obsolete. Concurrently, the changes between M2TW 1.0 and 1.1 made certain strategies that were effective useless. I don't like having to learn entirely new ways of doing things and I'd just rather avoid the aggravation and wait until the game is more or less complete. Anyway that's what's going on with my decision to stick with RTW.
Primary reason for me would be that I never bought M2TW. Main reason for that was the insult that was the map, as well as some really questionable design decisions such as replacing Aragon with Portugal, the inclusion of Aztecs etc. , but the map was what really did it.
And I'm no historical accuracy fanatic. Even if it had been as bad in that regard as Knights of Honor it would be ok, in RTW the only really annoying thing are the Eggies but they pale with the map of M2TW (mostly because I've been able to edit the Eggies, but I don't have the ability to edit the map :p)!
Two reasons that aren't canceled out by M2TW. The first being the following.
- My computer can run it well.
and the other being.
- MODS
Although there are some that I'm anticipating for Medieval 2. ^_^

Well I abandoned M2TW after a couple of weeks. Aside from my machine struggling a bit, there are far too many issues that prevent it from being playable in my opinion, so I'll wait until the next patch or 2 before reinstalling it. As to still playing RTW, I don't think I've got the most out of it yet. I'm still modding the game and looking for new challenges, and until I've had a couple of interesting campaigns, I'll happily keep on playing it.

I play Rome for the same reason I play the other TW games from time to time: each of them has their very specific feel to them. Playing as the Venetians is very very different from playing as the Julii for instance. It's great fun to see very different factions in the same places.
Also, while the battle speeds are ridiculous in Rome, it runs smoothly and looks pretty good on my setup. Haven't spent too much time on the mods yet - only a Chivalry campaign as the Polish (it was scary how similar it was to my current M2 Polish campaign... Damn those Germans!).
Of course I grow tired of Rome after fighting the Nth battle against the Egyptian Chariot Archers, but that happens with all TW games at some point. And I guess I have myself to blame, as the Scipii or as Thrace . Funny thing, I always build some elephants and never really use them for anything else than bashing open gates in smaller settlements - some of my ellies will never even see a battlefield, yet alone fight on it. Light cavalry, archers and the Phalanx -what else does anyone need (maybe some Onagers).

Heh I mean the Seleucids not the Thrace, never played with them...

After reading the "Emperor" series by Conn Iggulden and watching "Rome" the TV series, I'm hooked to anything Rome related. Funny how I think the Roman factions are uber lame, tho. Also, after being a LOTR freak for a while a few years ago, the epic battles in the game are hawt.
Oh yeah, anyone remember the TV series "Time Commanders"? That show got me into TW in the first place, albeit I played Shogun: Total War before RTW.
So yeah. :2thumbsup:
I like MTW2 vanilla, it is alrighty, and I am waiting for mods.
So I still stick to EB & RTR for a couple of long campaigns, Check out the new factions, look at the beautiful units and infos....there are so many things to do...And I am not playing that much....just round 4 hours a week, less in the summer.
And as soon as other Mods like BL etc... are done, I will check them out, if I am able to install them...:holmes:

I play rtw, because:
1) it's a better game
2) I don't have the cash or comp. to play m2tw
3) the mods are rad!

M2TW feel like all the attention was paid to the 3d engine for the battle map, with little attention paid to the Campaign map or gameplay mechanics. In short M2tw feels like if could have used another 6-9 months.
I think it was Sega, not CA that pushed this one out the door early, they probably wanted it on shelves for giftmas 2006.
I am loosing hope for patch 1.2 as well reading the TWblog and news it looks like it's all battle and Cinematic editor, few bugfixes (and 650 MEGS!!!!!).
sorry back on topic Rome total war is still fun, I love playing new and different campaign maps (Mundus Magnus+paved roads for easterners = Pontic and Armenian Bliss!)
RTR and EB are like whole new games, and free! there are tons and tons of mods I want to try.
even vanilla with factions that you don't get to play as is fun for a change.
I've heard too many negative things about MTW2, as far as bugginess goes, so I reckon I'll wait for a later lest costly version that's less buggy. That's what I did with RTW. I've had RTW Gold for >a year so I'm still having fun with it. I have limetid gaming time so RTW takes upabout all my available gaming hours. I'm also a fan of all thing Roman, historically and also historical fiction books based in the Roman era IE-Simon Scarrow, George Shipway, Wallace Breem, so I am a Rome loyalist, even though on RTW vanilla they are the most loaded faction (hey, I'm 38 and no longer have the hand/eye coordination of a Jedi Knight, I need a handicaap:laugh4:)

Hi All
It's strange to hear all the same problems and views on MTW2 as I remember hearing about RTW when it first came out. I must admit I have never owned a TW game within the first few months of its release. When I first got MTW it was in 2004 and I bought VI at the same time.
I could not run RTW on my old PC so I waited and waited while RTW went through the patches and then its expansions. In the mean time when MTW got boring I added mods which help the game last longer. Last September I bought RTW gold and then bought ATW at x-mas.
When I first played it I remember thinking "this isn't as bad as some of the forums were saying" but then I was starting at 1.5 patch which made a huge difference.
So my advice is stay with RTW until MTW2 has an expansion pack and a couple more patches. It will be a great game like Rome but in time, besides I've still got three separate games on the go and can't wait to mod up as well.

why buy mtw2 when there's Chivalry? it's a full conversion mod for RTW 1.5 takin' place in early era from AD 1078-1222
the graphics are even better than that of RTW. it's in final beta stage and it's free :D

My primary reason exactly!
I've played MTW2, and it wasn't at all what I expected it to be. I'll wait for excellent mods before I try again.
I like RTW because I am fascinated by this particular time in human history. And I just love to kick Roman ass and conquer the world.(Thats always fun:yes: )

1. I like the historical time period. Plus, like Cesar Victor stated, when you see a really good series like HBO's "Rome" or a good movie like "Gladiator" or "Troy" (to a lesser degree), it kind of puts me in the mood to play a game from this time era. R:TW provides that opportunity.
2. As a long time gamer, for years I've been wondering why there hasn't been a game that combines both strategic and tactical elements. And while CA/R:TW isn't the first to do so, they have come up with a product that does it very well. And for that, I'm grateful.
3. Replay value. IMO, R:TW is one of the best in this category. Yes, there have been other games over the years that have lent themselves well to the re-playability factor - but Rome is certainly one of the best. The way I see it, R:TW clearly meets my 'bang for the buck' criteria. Every additional hour I play the game just means that it was more than worthy of the price at the time of purchase.
As I don't play multi-player, however, I just wish the AI was a tad better. Then again, I imagine most of us feel this way.

Just to add a little contrary into the discussion, I, sadly, don't play Rome any more! I have gone back in time to the days of better graphics, sprites look better on my PC than 3D units, gameplay and prettier maps - yep I'm playing the first Medieval! What appeal it to me is the sheer complexity of the system and the cutting-edge intelligence of the AI, or at least on hard. I also enjoy the epic civil wars and power struggles, the cleverly designed risk style map, the complex and detailed assassinations, the ingenious trade routes, the spying, the evil treason, the pope and many other wonderful features that Rome seems to lack. Although I started with Rome, Medieval, the first one, really is a great improvement over the rest!

I still paly Rome because I love greek and roman ancient culture and history. It's a time period that is not discussed enough (besides medieval times). I also love conquering the Guals and Germany!
RTW/BI is quite simply a better game than M2TW. M2TW feels like a beta version of a BI add-on.
