The settlers V: heritage of kings

I am a fan of the settlers series, when the settlers V was released I didn't bought it because the bad reviews, it seems that this last title is a simple RST rather than a logistic game like the previous ones.

This weekend I found an offer, The settlers V + expansion pack for 5 euros. I was surprised that a game which is more or less modern has this low price.

Finally I bought it, I haven't time to play it yet. What's your opinion about the game, is it as bad as people said ?

Since you already bought it, why don´t you just play and find out whether you like it? What anybody else says is totally irrelevant, as long as you like it.

However, it´s definitely not what you´d expect from a Settler game, since it focusses more on the military than any predecessor so far and therefore feels very RTS-ish, although with a big resource management part.

You´ll have to try for yourself.

I bought this game because I was a big settlers fan

they killed the series with this game

it ceased to be about the little settlers and getting the logistics of several chains of production going

guess what - I dont care that there is a chick with massive jugs on the cover

now its another AOE3 but not as good - and I hated AOE3

so I am angry and disappointed that settlers - a great game and wonderful idea has been completely ruined by marketing and accounting suites - heard this music before

on the + side settlers 2 was remade for its 10th anniversary, and is a better game than settlers V will ever be

unless blue byte do a serious about face for the next settlers - then settlers V will be the last of their games that this black duck will purchase - pitty to end with a nasty after taste

Oddly enough, I just managed to pick up a cheap copy of Settlers V myself a couple of weeks ago - they had a copy with a $14.95 pricetag and although the other copies had an $89 pricetag, the counter girl very kindly agreed to sell it to me for the marked price.

Anyhow, I don't know if it's me or not, but I played it for a couple of hours and it just didn't grab me. Seemed a little too simplistic and cliched. But then, that's how I feel about most PC games these days :)

IMO, the best Settlers game I have played was the original Settlers on the Amiga. Presumably Settlers I on the PC was the same game, but since I never bought that title I can't be certain.

Hmm, yes I know the game, have played it and quite enjoyed it, yet I still miss the old micro-management "carriers finds the resourse, brings it to your building, diggers dig the foundaions and builders build it" system and many other too.

The transfer of resources between places now is very AoE style simplistic - you just get a little +2, +3, +4, +5 or a +6 magically appear over your buildings and it is teleported into your treasury. Also the ammount of resources is much less - in the Settlers IV there were logs, planks, vines, stone, grain, flour, bread, water etc. Now, in this version, there is simply clay, wood, stone and cash. Also residences and farms have been lost to a brand new system - men work, get tired, go to bed, walk out of the house, go get a bowl of porridge, or what ever these people eat and go back to work. Without these things they don't work as well and just sit around a fire doing nothing. Also the whole entire concept of boundries is dead, you can now build anything anywhere like in AoE which, to me, is a big loss - I liked having to build towers to expand my lands. The military is now revamped to lose the attack inside borders and attack outside borders system - the attack is universal everywhere also like AoE. However, there is a positive side, the military is revamped to include mighty cavalry and the story line is much better than that of others in the Settlers series. These two final things are for me, partial compensation for what was lost, yet, even with these things, it still lacks the depth of previous game.

My advice is that you only buy it if you like AoE and other such games in that RTS format, if you don't that sort of thing then you will not really be able to enjoy it.

IMO The Settlers 3 was probably the greatest strategy game of all time. Its basically what got me into gaming, and also made me interested in history and archaeology (even though i'm now going to Uni to study Geography). It basically helped chose the path I have taken so far (which is a little sad I know).

Same here - I had never seen a computer game before in my life before I tried the Settlers III in 2000! I enjoyed it, yet, sadly, after experiencing some nasty bugs, I had problems with foresters, trees refused to grow, I gave up and moved on to The Settlers IV in 2003 which kept on crashing due to a messed up CD-ROM which I had lost my receipt for. In between now and then I have bought AoE (April 2004), AoE III (November 2005), The Settlers HoK (December 2005), The Settlers HoK Mission CD (January 2006), R:TW (March 2006), The Settlers Hok Add-On (April 2006), AoE III the Warcheifs (September 2006) and now M:TW (January 2007).
