View Full Version : Under seige - can't train units or build?

When I am under seige, the options for training and building are there but when I end turn and I look at the settlement the training and building hasn't happened.
I haven't had a general in the settlements this has happened at and I have chosen the option that I can manage without generals.
My question is if this is normal and deliberate? And if I have a general is in one will I then succeed in training and building?
Incidentally, fantastic forum and I have been given renewed interest in the game when I have learnt several key things I would never never have figured out for myself. The more I learn the more amazing the game seems to me.
So many thanks to all who have posted advice when I have been to lazy to do so myself!
It is both normal and deliberate, and it's there to ensure that the besieged town just can't rustle up a garrison while the siege continues
Given how the AI manages to defend its cities in the game that might as well change. I've seen a strange thing in RTW where a family member could still recruit mercenaries while in the city. Most likely a bug created by RTR back in the day.

Maybe when sieged a different unit should be recruitable. Citizen militia/peasants who can throw rocks from the ramparts or woman armed with frying pans maybe:smash:

But still, imagine how frustrating it would be to besiege a city with almost no garrisons and then wait for the siege equipment. Once your equipment is built, you suddenly see that you are facing half a stack of various militia. It isn't top quality troops, but still it would be pretty troublesome
@Tiberius - I remember proposing back in the RTW days that cities should automatically have 20 units defending them in a siege, the excess ones made up of conscripted locals; but Xdeathfire's right - it's not going to happen

Thanks for the answer.
It makes sense now I think about it.
I don't think this should be possible for building. Creating buildings should be out of the question... where are they getting building materials from when the city is surrounded? How are they getting new experts into the city to set up new facilities?
As far as locals conscripting etc, I think it should be possible but relative to the opposition. There's not really much room to train anybody, so there is a limitation. They should thus be peasants with very loose formations as they had little room to train. Also, their armament should be haphazard at best; where are they getting new steel and wood to make new weapons? A lot of people in a city wouldn't have had pitchforks or bills from farming... The number of them available should change by the enemy and the size of the city. Larger cities have a larger potential number of conscripts/volunteers. But a lot of citizens in a city might not particularly want to fight; a lot of them might be looking after their homes but largely expecting nothing more than a change of rulers then life goes on. So for most sieges, it should only be a handful. Sieges from "natural enemies" or wars that have a history of sacking should get more. Sieges of muslim-catholic or vice versa or wars with exterminations should get the most units.

You need wide open spaces to learn close order drill? :stupido2:
Nah, at MCRD San Diego we just needed normal streets. The parade grounds for the fancier stuff. All on the base, though. In other words, all things that are within a city or castle, especially within the building descriptions for the various barracks buildings. ;-)
Your other points make sense, though.

it would find it refreshing to see that the local Christian populace would want to take up arms against my Muslim invaders but as a counter to them springing forth a new army they would have conditions that would need to be meet like the population size and religion of the enemy. Then in battle the peasant militia should have a trait that if the enemy general has a couple dread traits the peasant should start spreading the word how they all are going to be butchered and therefor decrease morale to all around them.
