View Full Version : Looking For a Good FPS game

Ok after a couple of years on the total war kick, I think I need to try something else. I used to play all the old novologic delta force games, but left them because everyone who played online was a hacker. ( my recent veiwing of call of duty 3 brought back some old memories.)

So after a long stretch of no FPS games, I want to try my hand at a new game. I am open to any and all suggestions, but I am looking for a game with the following qualities,

1. It's a PC game no console crap for me :smash:
2. a well supported multiplayer community
3. little or no hackers
4. I would prefer no monthly fee, but will not rule out a quality game because of it.

any help would be great. :2thumbsup:

I'd say wait for Crysis to come out.

Another suggestion I have is Counterstrike Source.

BF2142.

Unbeatable.

You play on servers were hackers are banned, reported to EA and have their CD keys banned. And no, you must have a legit CD key to even play Single Player.

Day of Defeat: Source. There's really no contest.

Don't even consider 2142, imo - the BF series has degenerated into a collection of games created primarily for, or at least populated by, stat cuddles

Also Red Orchestra is a must if you love wargame and don't wanna play the horrible BF series.

BF 2 was a lot of fun while I was into it... Finding a few good servers (or joining a clan, though I could not commit to that) is vital... But a lot of FPS fun with vehicles thrown in...

Trying to get into Armed Assault to (I really liked OFP) but it is still in need of more patching...

SP games you could try Dark Messiah (FPS but swords, bows and magic rather then guns), Oblivion has finally been released (just awating delievery)... Did you do CoD2? If not it is a must... GRAW was good on the PC and not just a console port... FEAR was short but a lot of fun... Prey was another one that was short but fun...

Prey FTW. It is an absolutely amazing FPS, great online and great single player

Prey was an incredibly letdown for me. Yes it was incredibly pretty and shiny, but the story was very lame and short. If all you want is nice graphics and a mindless run jump and shoot, Prey will fit the bill nicely.

Half-life 2 is also great for the first runthrough, but the ending is the exact same as Half-life 1; lame. No replay value for me, except for modding it so I can have the blue gravity gun from the start.

Quake 4 is ok, in terms of multiplayer they really fixed the netcode and functionality that was sorely missing from Doom 3. The base single player game is also not very inspired and straightforward, but it felt a bit more involved to me than Prey, but that's only because I liked the story better, so i guess personal preference there. Q4 has more of a replay value in single player, IMO, but it's still pretty sparse. One of those "I play it once a year" games.

I haven't played BF2 or BF2142 so no comment.

If you want stuff that's ... FPS-ish with heavy RPG elements, try Dark Messiah of Might and Magic and Oblivion. Hell if you haven't, try Morrowind too, you can get the whole Morrowind Gold pack (has both expansions) for $10 at Bestbuy and Compusa.

My $0.02.

Real classics if a little dated now (but great humour) where No One Lives for Ever and it's sequel imaginatively titled "No One Lives Forever 2" (escaping the Mimes haunts me still)...

70's Spy action in the Men from UNCLE style (with extra humour)...

Counterstrike Source is still the best online FPS around IMHO. There is always a crazy number of people on and there is always a server you could get on even if you aren't in a clan. Just make sure you find a couple of good reliable servers with proper restrictions like no magnums...Seriously every time just starts going crazy with sniping on every server i play with magnums allowed.

sapi
03-26-2007, 09:29
I hate to burst your bubble, but CSS has to rate as one of the worst online shooters, period.

On a scale from one to ten, its community would be in the negatives; its hitboxes are iffy and its balancing is non existant.

Either play a decent one (such as dods as eddy suggested) or get a sp game where these issues dont' matter, like Half Life 2, which has to be one of the best games ever made.

TevashSzat
03-27-2007, 02:26
Sapi, as for community I personally tend to play with friends as most people have Half Life 2 and it wouldn't be too hard to get a couple of friends get it.

As for balancing, there is a reason why most servers ban magnums and tactical shields due to their cheapness. Magnum is the big offender here. After all of the time that I have played using scout where head shots are needed for 1 shot kills, I can almost guarantee a one shot one kill every time I play, but again most servers don't allow it.

The noob cannon is pretty cheap indoors, but it gets owned by longer range weapons easily and I would stick to an AK anyday.

@Vuk - to answer you with a logical arguement instead of my initial reaction:

I'd like to see you come up with a fps game that has the same level of community, challenge and fun that DoD:S does; but that's just my opinion.

Remember, we all look at things differently, and while eddy and I may think that DoD:S is a great game, or, as I'd like to phrase it, know it is :grin2: the decision ultimately rests with you.

It's a suggestion, nothing more, nothing less.

I can recommend that game. Even the original AvP is still fun. It is very much fun in MP as well, especially playing a group of marines getting chased by an alien. Then you run out of flares and you're screwed.

I used to play '42, but not online, and got into bf2, until I got annoyed with the constant exploiting and, for lack of a better term, stat whoring, that seems to infest the servers.

I still play occasionaly with my friends, but my net doesn't like bf2 for some reason (90% of the time i'll lag out for no reason) so that means I have little chance to play :(

I actually enjoyed Doom 3 quite a bit more than Half-life 2, even though it's a flashlight-fest. I remember hitting the Hell level late on a Fri. night, was a bit intoxicated and my friends were on Teamspeak.. apparently I was quoting Event Horizon quite a bit.

/shrug

AvP2 is a great game IMO, if you never played it. Sure the graphics are going to show their age, but playing as the human made me jump all the time. It's also interesting to play as the different species, each has their strengths and weaknesses.

Humans: Insane damage output from weaponry, gotta watch ammo, health is limited to medpacks.

Predators: IDDQD + IDKFA. OK so I guess they don't have a weakness really.

Alien: Ahhh... a stealth players challenge, esp. on hard. Few bullets and you are toast, but you can eat stuff to regain health. Wallwalking and the pounce are great for moving around.

:balloon2:

Laman
03-29-2007, 06:31
The Predators weakness is that you get overconfident and get killed because you thought you could march in and fight 500 aliens at the same time... ...:skull:

Kekvit Irae
03-29-2007, 08:22
AvP and AvP2 are both games I recommend. AvP2 has a more "Half-Life" feel to it, and is much easier than AvP (when playing the Marine or Predator) thanks to the limited waves of Aliens. AvP had unlimited waves, forcing you forward, and enhancing the scare factor. Trying to complete some of the challenges in AvP can be both fun and frustrating at the same time, such as headbiting a Predator.

Regarding the Predator: The Predator's weakness is that its targeting system can only lock on to one specific race at a time, depending on what vision mode you are in. If there are multiple races around (especially in multiplayer), constant switching of vision can be a hinderance. "Normal" vision mode has no lock-on feature for your weapons, so you sacrifice long-range superiority for color vision.

Whacker wins for Doom trivia and Event Horizon. :loveg:

The first AvP was fantastic, didn't care for the Alien and Predator missions but playing as a marine dear god get them of me. Sadly everything in the second was scripted, more focus on being a cinematic experience but altogether less fun. It also wins the price for the worst weapon placement ever, YAY sniper rifle *BENG* *BENG* the end.

Just got to crap on Event Horizon since it is mentioned, now that is a textbook example of screwing up an interesting premise.

And for that matter, the MOH series (Allied Assault, Spearhead, and Breakthrough) based on the older Q3 engine are all outstanding single player experiences, IMO. Pacific Assault was also good, but the original Allied Assault just had that "originality" and outstanding implementation...

Also, if you want a good laugh (courtesy of my friend who worked on this expansion), load up the first mission in Breakthrough where you are fighting in a sandstorm, and then activate the cheats to put it in 3rd person perspective. Enjoy the "sandstorm". :laugh4:

I would like to say I was hugely disappointed with AvP2. The first AvP was - and still is - IMO a lot better. I'd give AvP2 2 out of 5, at most, while I give the original AvP 5 out of 5. The current mp community is small though, for both the first and second game.

If you haven't tried Operation Flashpoint yet, I would recommend you to do so. The mp community is small though.

If you want a large mp community try Enemy Territory or Americas Army. Both game are completely free. AA is more Counter-Strike style, ET is more fast paced, objective based, with respawning troops and quite complex gameplay with different troops with different abilities such as engineer, medic etc.

So does AVP2 on a few places, some are hard to find though... Sadly, for the first one, if you simply run it will get quite dull, but if you stayed for a while, it gets very interesting.

On one of the early missions were you were told to run, I stayed at the end of a quite open corridor and turned around to kill my presumed chasers. Turning around I see 4 aliens coming towards me, so I shot a granade to kill 2 of them and the fires at the other 2. At this point I see more coming behind, so I pull back towards the right corner fireing at the aliens coming towards me, getting close (can't keep up killing them in time) and start attacking me. I reach the button that closes opens the large door infront of me and slowly closing the door behind me, praying that they won't slip through the door and my gun before I can continue running towards safety. The door opens and I can continue to run (no longar facing backwards), but soon I hear their sounds behind me and moments after that my life start to drop. While still running I turn around, shot the alien and see more coming after me, turn around and continue to run. I have to repat that once more before I finally comes to that armoured viecle and safety.
Interestingly, the cinematic afterwards had the viecles turret fireing agaisnt 2 aliens and I did not see them while replaying the mission.

And you'll get another sniper weapon, that you can use to kill 3-4 enemies before you lose it (only place were you have all the weapons at the same time) and won't play around with it until the very end.

As for the HL debate, there's a christmas pack still around that got HL1, HL2, HL2 episode one and is quite cheap, so you can figure out for yourself wich one you prefer best, if you ever wondered.
Haven't played AvP but AvP2 certainly has it's moments as seen above.

I enjoyed most of AvP2; the predators and aliens are fun to play with, and the marines are great until you end up at some awful bit shooting other humans with a pistol. And Fragony said it, the Sniper rifle, WTH? :dizzy2: I know it's available a little earlier, albeit in a somewhat hidden area without anymore open spaces left, but seriously.

As much as I absolutely love sniping in FPS games, I honestly do not see the need of a sniper rifle in AvP2. The vast majority of the game is in confined corridors against very fast moving enemies The autotracking mode of the smartgun more than makes up for the lack of sniping points.

The thing about BF2 is not that it is authentic or awesom or anything... It is that it is really easy to get into and do anything yet due to the scale hides a surprising amount of tactical depth...

I liked it because their is more feedback than in a standard MP FPS and yet there is no extra commitment as in MMOs (thinking PlanetSide here)...

I actually found PlanetSide to be a lot of fun. It had the biggest battles of any FPS I had encountered, with hundreds on each side congregating on individual battles in many Squads... There was usually soime strategy being employed to as it had a command system not unlike BF2...

My only issue was that I had as much fun in BF and I didn;t have to pay for that monthly...

Wow, you guys are making me want to reinstall AvP2- what an awesome game. I know that I enjoyed the single-player, but all of my fondest memories are from multiplayer. All the different game modes, combined with the different races made for such interesting gameplay- like the mode where the aliens started out as face-huggers and had to latch onto an enemy "host" and the host they targetted determined the kind of alien they burst out as. :beam:

As to Preds, their weakness- in addition to the view modes -was usually numbers. In a good MP aliens vs preds game, it wasn't unusual to see 2-1 or 3-1 odds for the predators.
