View Full Version : Princesses - do they get cut off by border forts

Hi guys,
Sorry about the long thread title and about my irritant to you all, yet, I am, as you probably guessed, your latest resident M:TW noob, and idiot, who knows little about the game, I can't tell the difference between a prince and a king, and is always losing battles. However, I just started an Early Campaign and I have allot of princesses wandering around doing very little useful. I want to marry them off to my neighbours, the French, to insure an alliance, if that is possible - I'm too scared to send those ladies across the borders to test it out of fear of any border forts the enemy may posses killing them off! So, may I ask, can you send your princesses across borders without forts getting them and halting their advances. I'm sorry to annoy you guys like this with my nobbish question, all advise appreciated, thanks, cheers!

LOL I never even thought of that one... Your fine. Emessaries and Princesses don't get into trouble by border forts.

but give yourself a break and... 1306 posts??? since Jan wow.

Hey Omanes, good to see you made it over here! No worries about asking questions, regardless of how stupid you may think they are. That's partially what the rest of us are here for, after all. ~:)

cegman is correct, though. Princesses need not fear border forts. In fact, the only agents that do need to worry about passing BF's are spies and assassins. All other agents -- princesses, emissaries, imams, inquisitors, etc. -- can pass freely between provinces without hinderance.

They could be knocked off by an assassin, though. Granted, it seems that the ai has better targets then them, but it has happened. Make sure to use 'em quick also, while they still have "value".

Hey Omanes, welcome!

greaterkhaan raises a very valid point - princesses have a limited shelf life. If you don't find a use for them by the time they turn 35 (I believe it's 35 - someone may care to confirm or correct this), then they become spinsters and are removed from the game.

Another use for your pricesses is to marry them off to your generals. This improves the loyalty of the general.

I pretty much always marry my princesses off to my generals to improve loyalty and to add a bit of extra insurance for the royal line. I did once have my king die without an heir (recently) and instead of BOOM game over, a civil war erupted between two generals married to my princesses. This is the first and only time I'd seen this in years of playing the game. I actually remember doubting someone that posted about this once as well, it turned out they were right. It is very rare though (as with inheriting another faction's lands through marriage) and certainly not to be relied on.

Well, that's something I should do. Haven't thought so much of it. Having only a civil war instead of simply disappearing is good!

Speaking of which, If the Holy Roman Emperor dies hierless, does your most powerful general replace him or not? I've never been heirless when he died (although pretty darn close:sweatdrop: ), So I wouldn't know, but everytime he dies it says that if he's heirless the strongest general is picked.:help:

That is what occurs.

The same thing happens while playing the papacy (XL-mod) everytime the pope dies.

This occurs in vanilla MTW and MTW/VI irrespective of mods. A faction called FN_GERMAN_HRE and another called FN_PAPIST will always have this type of royal line AFAIK. The Vikings faction in the Viking Invasion campaign are the same also.

Very cool, man. :2thumbsup: I want to say I experienced this once or twice as well, but it was so long ago (at least a couple years) that I can't even say for certain that it happened. It's good you can verify it with something more recent.

That was probably me -- although by that point I was no longer sure of it myself. ~;)

hmm that is to say....if one of the generals is elected, what would happen if one cuts down the force of the HRE or the Pope to a single last unit (the leader) and he dies or is assassinated before he can build another unit?

less interesting in case of the HRE of course as they usually perish anyway, but with regard to el Popo...

Meaning undying factions, then? But is tis the case only for the AI or for the player as well?

Not undying... Just resilient down to the last province. :skull:

I've often wondered about that. Put it on huge units so that he can't train a unit in one year, reduce him to one province and try to assassinate him out of the game?

Oh, yes. Of Course!

Caravel, I'm not sure that would work because there would still be a new guy who takes generalship of the unit. Even if you do assassinate him, I'm pretty sure they would just elect the guy who took over the Pope's unit when you assassinated him. I think the only way this would be possible would be to assassinate every single guy in the Papacy's army and that would be an even bigger pain then just kicking him out of the game in standard fashion.(especially on huge unit size)

I believe you are right. And when that man becomes Pope the unit will be replenished to full strength, ensuring that this never occurs. Good thinking. :2thumbsup:

That is correct, the only way to get rid of the Papacy and the Holy Roman Empire is to conquer each and every province of theirs.

And in case of the pope even that´s only temporary, he´ll be back.
