hello i own a copy of the RTW disk and a new mobo with 1 ide slot and about 4 ide hard/optical drives. since when did ide cables become obsolete anyway?

obviously i need all the real drives i can get and was hoping to somehow bypass the no cd check or to mount an image to a virtual drive to play the game. i am using win iso and also alcohol 120 to try and make the image and i have tried to mount it with alcohol 120 and dameon tools, but to no avail. it always tells me to insert the cd and try again. the cd is rome total war gold edition already patched to 1.5

any ideas? i don't understand why it won't work i thought this would be a straight forward procedure. thanks guys

I have a feeling you won't get much help with this here. Circumventing copy protection is usually not discussed on a form such as this one.

well can you tell me where it is okay to talk about? i kinda thought this would be the case (and that is why i endeavored to explain my hardwar set-up) but you must admit that since it is legal and inconvenient to me and i did purchase the disk that i have every right to ask, and indeed every right to circumvent the protection. thx clinton (:

its not right for me to have to buy a sata optical drive just so i can play rome and not tie up my other drive when i already own 3 optical devices which take a different connection

Sorry dmcheatw, Total War fansites generally don't like the discussion of piracy. If you are having problems installing Rome then you could ask in the Technical Support forums for more, lets say, legal resolutions.

There is very little price difference between IDE and SATA optical drives now and you can buy a quality-brand re-writer for less than £25, probably under $45 in the USA. Although converters are available, there isn't much benefit to a converter, cost-wise.

Whilst I appreciate that it might be a bit of a financial problem for you if you are a youngster, it's clear that you can't continue struggling along without an optical drive. Sadly, you will just have to reconcile yourself to the fact that your IDE drives are redundant now and take it from there. You need a SATA drive, so redirect your energies towards that goal.

Well I sent you a PM on this.

Those of you who like me own the series should be able to do this without having people get down on you for asking.

Many copies out there for this game I'm sure, but try being a bit more helpful please.

Just my two cents worth.

Welcome to the .org Primus, unfortunately the discussion of breaking copy protection for total war games, including discussion of such programs as alcohol 120% and daemon tools for this purpose has always been an undesirable subject AFAIK. It is not really for me to state .org policy, but I am pretty sure that the .org likes to retain good relations with CA and I'm also quite sure if you read the forum rules you'll see some mention of this. Having members here instructing all and sundry as to how to crack the game (which is actually what dmcheatw is trying to do here) doesn't go towards maintaining those relations. I know for a fact that if you tried this on at the .com forums, several moderators would be on your case instantly, and this thread would no longer be open. Whether you're genuine or not is not the issue.

I'm afraid that it is not ok to talk about it anywhere, certainly no where I can direct you to from here anyway. I understand where you're coming from, and I do know that the copy protection is annoying, doesn't deter piracy in the slightest and simply harasses the legitimate user. But there's not a lot to be done about it at present. Games publishers have to start realising how ineffectual this type of protection is. Personally I would prefer on online/telephone validation code system. This would allow me to make a working backup copy of the disc legally and not have CD/DVD in the drive all the time making a noise and having to spin up every time the game is launched.
