I recently got Dark Crusade running on my machine (I still don't understand why it's been so troublesome) and since I've read a lot about the game here I was wondering what everyone's favourite race to play was.

For me, it's a toss up between Tau and Space Marines. The latter seem to have more variety, but often I tend to play them in a boring way (relying on Missile Launcher squads to take things down at a distance). Tau seem to require more of a balance of units and possibly more finesse (vulnerable but powerful). I guess I'll vote SM as that's my 40k miniatures army (Dark Angels).

I've found co-operative play with my son quite fun, as allied AI factions can co-ordinate very well against us. In solo play scenarios, the AI kills itself and it's a bit of a snooze. Against the AI, my marines often struggle against Chaos (Khorne berserkers + defilers), while Necrons can rush me quite effectively. The AI has no idea how to play IG (it never invests enough in power to get them vehicles).

I love the IG once they get the Baneblade! That thing destroys everything. But I think on the whole, those jack of all trades, master of none Space Marines are my favourite. I especially love the Terminators, although by the time you can build them they don't have a lot to do, what with all your Dreadnaughts and Tanks blowing everything to bits.

I sometimes find the game a bit too hectic for my liking though. After grabbing a few control points (or whatever they're called I forget) I like to sit back and have the AI come at me. Unfortunately you suddenly get an endless stream of vehicles and infantry pounding your lines which once breached is incredibly difficult to ever sort out again as trying to train new units and send them out to the front whilst simultaneously retraining depleted units is a nightmare. I sometimes think it would be fun if for some skirmishes you could limit the structures/tech level certain teams could build. Then my Terminators could have endless hordes of rubbishy Orks to kill!

I've actually never played as the Tau. I was saving them until I encounter them in the DC campaign. Although I haven't yet and I can't really be bothered with the campaign either.

I think i'll have to go for the Tau, allthough i haven't really played the game all that much and haven't tried the eldar yet, but their missile barrage is just too awesome too ignore and stealth suits completely pwn the AI which can't handle infiltrated units.

I agree, but it's not too bad if you set the gamespeed and resources to slow. You can even do that if the campaigns if you edit a text file (although I had to go to the forums to find out how).

The game gets a little silly on "very slow" (it's like painful slow motion) although I confess it was how I coped with some of the tougher missions in the DC campaign (e.g. a two monolith rush or tagging those servo things in the space port). Editing the files, speed is actually a continuous variable so you can finetune it (I have one file where F1-F5 give me a range of different slow speeds from very slow to normal).

Then my Terminators could have endless hordes of rubbishy Orks to kill!

Hardest fight I ever had was in a DC campaign defending against the Ork boss who hitherto had just sat throughout the campaign and accumulated 6+ honour guard. Within a few minutes, he had massive horde that just ripped through my Tau (who must have been close to or at their unit cap). I played it many ways, but never could win so I reloaded. the ork boss then just sat passively again. I never got around to taking him on. :sweatdrop:

You can pause the game and give orders while paused, that can help too.

I like the Guard best, just like I did when I played the table-top game.

I miss the Sisters of Battle. :sadg:

I voted for the Imperial Guard, my baby both on the table and on the computer.

No one has been taken over by a momentory madness?

Skulls for the Skull Throne, Blood for the Blood God!

I feed on the blood of the innocent!

I find chaos so much fun to play in DoW, i turn everything to melee and just rush.

Marines or Chaos, that's what I used in TT. Old habits die hard.

Definetly Eldar, I just find their style of play very intriguing! Fast and Deadly, and at the same time screwed if they get concentrated fire. Although the allrounder Space Marines are always a good fallback. Basically the only two races I played seriously in Skirmish Mode. (Well and the Orcs a little bit)
I used to play DoW in Slow but have changed to Normal now. Every other RTS just appears slow though besides DoW. I love the action part, where it kicks in from the beginning. Most of the games I play are over quickly, but very intense. I love it! :2thumbsup:

I'm going to create from scratch a Dark Angels army with the latest codex. Hopefully with the limited time I have start building the 400 point core (for 40K in 40 minutes) by July... even that is ambitious... Nurgle has nothing on nappies. :help:

Good luck. You might want to snap up one of those battalion boxes or whatever they are called. Very good value (cost £50 in the UK) and most of the stuff should be useful. They are a limited release - they won't always be on the shelves.

Think of it as an investment - the nappied one might start to get interested in your hobby in about 5 years.

Well, I've been an Eldar fan since I saw their 2nd edition Codex (with the Dire Avenger Exarch holding a powersword and a shuriken pistol), and my favorite W40K and overall Sci-Fi race is the Eldars, so they'll have my vote.

Yet, though I enjoy playing with them, as it allows some nice tricks (like having your whole base hidden in the warp, or moving your building right near your opponent's starting position), I also find the IG to be quite funny actually. Seeing loads of guards outnumbering the opponent, who is anyway being rolled over by 2 leman russes and a Baneblade is priceless.
And I'm not even speaking about Commissars, who are the badassest characters in the whole game.

Chose space marines just cause i love the name and you know space marines are cool and what not but for actual playing ability it would have to be tau

I can't stand the Eldar. I haven't given them much chance really, but in the Winter Assault add-on you're forced to play as them and they annoy me. It's not so much the units, but the incredibly infuriating mechanised voices. Argh. Having to rely on stealth (in the opening missions anyway) means you need to keep gradually moving them around, which means having to hear the same really cheesy and grating 2 sayings every few seconds. The Space Marine dreadnaughts are similarly annoying, but at least they're pretty cool, especially when they're finishing off some stupid ork by breaking their neck or whatever.

I see there's not many votes for the Necrons. I was under the impression that they were the favourite choice in multiplayer, owing to the fact they can become pretty much unstoppable. Personally I've found in the actual DC campaign, that the enemy Space marines etc immediately rush me and kill all my honour guard units and then kill my poor Necron lord before I've got chance to say, 'Well hold on just a minute chaps, isn't there something in your codex about unfairly rushing a bunch of slow to build up enemy forces.... what... you don't care....'

The Space Marine dreadnaughts are similarly annoying,...

Oh come on, they have the best voices in the game!

Well, I guess like Minsc in BG2, it might be possible to have too much of a good thing[1].

[1]Minsc's voice work started off as a hoot and ended up driving me insane:

Minsc: "Ahhh, we are all heroes now. Me, and you, and Boo. Hamsters and rangers everywhere rejoice!"
Me: "AAARRGH!" :wall:

Played one game of the Winter one... it was the most unbalanced game I have ever played and fro that day onwards I refused to play another game.
