Do you still suffer a penalty for being excommunicated when there is no Papal States? How can you reconcile without asking the Pope?

Also, the Pope was in the middle of Moorish Africa, when there were no crusades called there. Is it odd that he would land in Africa and wander off?

Also-Also, do you wish you could choose your own religion like Constantine or Theodosius did? Like declare England a Muslim state.

on your third point:
While I don't like the idea of being able to "choose your own religion" (Theodosius and Constantine were both 800 years before the M2TW time period), I do wish the Reformation could be somehow portrayed with some accuracy, both in regards to the Anglican Reformation led by Henry VIII, and to the Protestant Reformation on the Continent involving the likes of Martin Luther and Jean Calvin.

No changing religions (I know, it was in BI, and very nice).

I do know that the Pope always comes back every few turns with a full stack of good troops if he has no lands.

Papal states can never be defeated. The Pope just wanders around with an army and no city and will try to find a city to occupy. Even if there are no cardinals left to become Pope, as soon as a cardinal appear, it will become the pope.

IrishAmenian, you're thinking of MTW

In M2TW, the Pope will not return with troops but will exist as long as there are cardinals to be elected.

The papacy itself cannot be destroyed.

I have taken all the papal states territories, and killed 4 popes in a row. Then ,ironically, a cardinal from sicily was raised to popehood while in a sicilian fleet. He then stayed there till i sank the fleet, and a new pope somewhere else in the world was raised and is wandering to this day. I think there ought to be something along the lines of raising your own pope, ie the way france did historically.

So wait, I'm honestly not clear on this still... Say you kill off the Papal States faction, take all lands held by it.

Now say you knock off the pope-o-matic himself.

Now say the college of cardinals is completely empty. In fact say for giggles that there are no catholic priests at all in game.

What happens if all 3 of these conditions exist simultaneously?

I can only see anyone achieving this as a non-Catholic faction. I'd like to know though.
Come on someone, anyone with nearly all the map conquered can try this out with a few assasins.

Are you sure?
As the Rus, I conquered Rome and every few turns old Popey would reappear with a whole bunch of Swiss Guard, Pavis Crossbowmen, etc and besiege Rome or Florence. I'd always beat him back with my Cossack Musketeers.

I think the best way to test this out is to leave a Catholic faction with 1 territory. Get plenty of assassins and kill the Pope. Obviously YOU won't have any priests or cardinals. Unless the ai spawns more cardinals than you can kill every turn, surely you'd find out?
Umm... hang on. Would the pope just respawn out of nowhere?

I'm kind of confused now... :dizzy2:

I believe the pope would spawn out of nowhere much like what inquisitors do
