Yes, the capital of Myanmar (Burma) was moved 200 miles to the north. Why would a President shift the capital?

The historical Burma has two major centers of power, the lower Irrawady river delta, where Yangon is; and the upper Irrawady, around the region where the new capital is. The delta is a richer region with larger population, but the upper (around Mandalay) is "safer" and more central geographically. Both regions contain historic capitals of old Burmese empires.
I suspect it's just one of those "This is a new, modern, well-planned capital city! Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair!" thing that was quite popular in developing countries of Asia a while back. Or may be the military just needs to move closer to oppress the different peoples along the underdeveloped borders that quite rightly despise the government to the core more effectively.
i heard that the capital relocation had to do with some burmese version of feng shui and or zodiac signs that pointed irrefutably to an american invasion if the capital was not moved. at least the word on the street is that is what the junta believed.
Good thing I postponed my memorizing all capitals and countries of the world by heart plan.

Geography and history class never taught me anything. I learn that stuff because I live in this world, and I should know as much about it as possible. Though knowing the stuff beforehand helps alot. I plan to learn major rivers, mountain ranges and deserts.

You would get along with my buddy from NY City very well. Completely off topic, but it's a fantastic city. I'm looking forward to seeing again this summer when I fly out of JFK.

I must admit I have read about such plans about 8-10 months ago.
The reason given semi-officially was that the new capital is ... easier to defend and controll.
Apparently the ruling junta is afraid of some sort of foreign invasion.
It is serious - the guys are 'quite' paranoid and landlocked capital will be a better place to defend against foreign or domestic attack...:juggle2:

There are lots of rebels, maybe they are getting stronger and repression will only make them stronger...
Not a place I plan to spend Holidays though!
I hate to pack body armor and kevlar on holiday.
It might actually benefit the rest of the country if the government disappears off and leaves them to get on with it.

Dont forget about the dual wielding pistols and the giant mechete attached across your back to complete your "completely badass" persona.
