View Full Version : 0.81a CTD fixes you should try out before posting

Very many of the CTDs occurring in the current build will be eliminated by applying the fixes we've already discovered. If you still have 0.81a and haven't installed the permanent fixes for it (removed now), install 0.81a v2 now. This applies even if you don't have a problem right now! The 0.81a V2 patch is savegame compatible and will do no damage. Install all the permanent fixes for 0.81a V2 too, even if you don't have a problem right now! When the instructions say to unpack files, you can use 7-zip (http://www.7-zip.org/), which is free.

If your game crashes, with all permanent fixes installed, please try more than once as some crashes happen as flukes, never to return. These flukes are impossible to investigate, so only post a report if the crash is persistent (or happens very often spread over some turns).

The temporary fixes will disable varying degrees of functionality and should therefore only be used to get past a persistent crash. Even if installing a temporary fix gets you past the problem, we still want you to post the savegame (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=80870) before the persistent crash, to help us find permanent, non-gamebreaking fixes. Try all the temporary fixes before posting. When you do post, make sure to say which temporary fix got you past it. If it still crashes with the temporary ones, please answer the questions found here (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=83728) in your report.

Permanent fixes for 0.81a V2:

Temporary fixes:

Broader rebellion CTD fix (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=84337)

Updated 2007-05-03, description updated 2007-05-20
The improved rebellion CTD fix in 0.81a v2 does not fix all instances. This one should work for those other instances, but will give an unfortunate broader recruitment zone for some lowlevel units in palaces and may have other inconsistencies with the usual 0.81a recruitment. You may choose to use this as a permanent fix if you think the altered recruitment is less annoying than occasional crashes.
Make a backup by copying <RTW directory>/EB/data/export_descr_buildings.txt to export_descr_buildings.txt.original.
Download this file (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=1324).
Store the archive inside <RTW directory>.
Use the fix as needed:

Unpack "CTD fix for EB v0.81.rar" to <RTW directory>. It will overwrite EB/Data/export_descr_buildings.txt.
Delete <RTW directory>/EB/data/world/maps/base/map.rwm. It will be regenerated when you next start the game.
Run the game to get past the crash.
Restore the original EDB by copying export_descr_buildings.txt.original to export_descr_buildings.txt.
Delete <RTW directory>/EB/data/world/maps/base/map.rwm. It will be regenerated when you next start the game.

Oasis CTD (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=1483285&postcount=13)

Updated 2007-04-01
Only some people are having problems with the oasis. If you find that this is the solution in your case, you should keep it installed. Otherwise, treat it as a temporary troubleshooting thing (you want the oasis, right?).
Make a backup by copying <RTW directory>/EB/data/descr_settlement_plan.txt to descr_settlement_plan.txt.original.
Download this file (http://rapidshare.com/files/23764344/descr_settlement_plan.rar.html).
Store the archive inside <RTW directory>/EB/data.
Use the fix as needed:

Unpack descr_settlement_plan.rar. It will overwrite descr_settlement_plan.txt.
Run the game to get past the crash.
Restore the original plan file by copying descr_settlement_plan.txt.original to descr_settlement_plan.txt.

Trait file nerf (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=1469266&postcount=13)

Updated 2007-03-29
Make a backup by copying <RTW directory>/EB/data/export_descr_character_traits.txt to export_descr_character_traits.txt.original.
Download this file (http://rapidshare.com/files/21673170/edct.rar.html).
Unpack into <RTW directory>/EB/data.
Use the fix as needed:

Unpack edct_notriggers.rar. It will overwrite export_descr_character_traits.txt.
Run the game to get past the crash.
Restore the original trait file by copying export_descr_character_traits.txt.original to export_descr_character_traits.txt.

I was thinking of creating a thread like this...

Why is the script fix for Tuat temporary though?

Also I'm pretty sure the trait fix does not over the export_descr_buildings.txt but rather the EDCT.txt, just to clear up any confusion.

Thanks, you're right about EDCT, of course :beam:. The Tuat thing is temporary because it disables functionality, like the others there. Permanent fixes will not break anything, so should always be used.

Inspired by Oleo's mispelling hunting, I decided to do some myself in the EDCT text and I found this in the Tsorim victory conditions line 24506, column 131, Rome is spelled "Roma," (also in the Makedonia victory conditions) where in Epieros conditions it is "Rome;/Roma," and in the Roman Victory conditions it is "Rome;Roma".

Syrakousai also has a similar problem, in one instance (Tsorim) being Syrakousai, others being Syracuse;/Syrakousai

I don't know if this needs a new thread, but what should these be? In the regions text it is Syracuse and Rome...

bovi
03-29-2007, 18:27
I think you are both right and wrong. The Rome on that line does not mean anything because it is a comment (notice the ; at the start of the line). However there may be a problem with the spelling of Roma on lines 174038 and 174049. I'll mention it on the internal board and will update this if it is indeed wrong. Thanks again!

fallen851
03-29-2007, 19:10
I thought the comment thing only effects the second piece of the line, so those that are Rome;Roma, comments out the Roma, meaning some places have Rome, others Roma... same thing with the Syracuse thing?

Maybe I'm wrong...

About the rebel city CTD, you also need to delete map.rwm and let the game generate a new one. Without making this, the fix seem to be usseles.

bovi
03-29-2007, 20:07
Ï was mistaken, Rome is a valid city, according to descr_regions_and_settlement_name_lookup.txt. However I found no less than 8 more lines with errors when I finecombed it. I'll update the fix.

Thanks Rex, will update.

Syracuse has the same problem. Please let me know when you've updated the fix.

Thanks Bovi!

We left the original names for four cities I think - because that was necessary early on with the senate (which kept assigning missions to take those cities, and referencing their internal names). We've been too afraid to change them to something else.

Rome/Roma
Syracuse/Syrakousai
Apollonia/Ambrakia

Temporary fixes:
Tuat Celtiberian alliance script fix (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=1476954&postcount=8)

Make a backup by copying <RTW directory>/EB/data/scripts/show_me/EBBS_SCRIPT.TXT to EBBS_SCRIPT.TXT.original.
Download this file (http://rapidshare.com/files/23291356/EBBS_SCRIPT.TXT.rar.html).
Unpack into <RTW directory>/EB/data/scripts/show_me.
Use the fix as needed:

Copy EBBS_SCRIPT.TXT.TuatDisabled to EBBS_SCRIPT.TXT
Run the game to get past the crash
Restore the original script by copying EBBS_SCRIPT.TXT.original to EBBS_SCRIPT.TXT.

bovi,

The player should not copy the original EBBS_SCRIPT.txt over the fixed version after getting past the crash. He'll probably crash again not too long after reloading a saved game.

Thanks Atilius, moved the Tuat fix to permanent. I haven't made the updated fix to the typos yet, probbie will sometime today.

Takk bovi.

I'm testing a better fix for it. I'll pass it on to you later and, if you think it's appropriate, you could substitute it for the version you're currently linking to.

It appears I've used the wrong file as master for my typo weeding, I'll have to do it all over again.

Are these fixes compatible w/BI?

I have no idea. I thought you said you had tried them already though?

Can I use these fixes for version 0.81 too? Because I have a CTD occurring in my macedonian campaign. Each time it's the AS' turn, the game crashes. When I disable the script, I get past the CTD, so I didn't want to make a new topic.

1. Will any of the above mentioned fixes help me, regarding that I CAN get past the CTD with script disabled and regarding that it's 0.81?

2. When I always end the turn with script disabled, does the AI get the benefits from the script at all? Do I get all the nice script things at all?

I hope / I think these two questions are answerable without further investigation.~:)

I cant get Rapid Share to work. They seem to be doing everything in their power to make me pay. :wall:

Are the files hosted anywhere else?

bovi
05-01-2007, 10:36
@Nixal I don't think the fixes will work on 0.81, but they might. Don't count on it. What I do think is that you should upgrade to 0.81a. Note that you'll have to start a new campaign. As for your other question, when you do not enable the script, it is, well, disabled. It has no effect at all.

@Martinus That's odd, a lot of people have had it work for them... I don't know anywhere else the files are hosted.

Hello bovi,

I tried two things, the typo corrections thing (no results) and the Tuat Celtiberian Alliance thing. I tried these because they are both related to the script, and I told that the CTD only happened when the script was turned on. However, it worked! :2thumbsup:

Btw, I checked out Tuat with fow turned off, and I found over 40 buildings there called "Victory (Western Greek)". The descriptions say "Warning - that should never appear!" I know, I have a somehow crude v.081 with all the fixes I applied now, but when you are interested in the savegame, I can upload it.

bovi
05-06-2007, 18:36
Great, have fun! Let's hope you don't encounter new problems from mixing up :beam:.

No point in posting your savegame for that. In 0.81 I believe Tuat performed the function that Terhazza currently does, which is holding all sorts of marker buildings that we need to get the rest of the game to work right.

when i try to run the game,it gives an error talks about the "germanic infantry hundaskapiz" line 16088 column 57.

What can i change in export descr files to get the game going?

Sounds like a bad install, you should try to install again in a clean 1.5 RTW directory.

Hello, guys!
I've just downloaded the v2 patch from EB site and after unzipping it I found 2 subfolders inside: the "Eb\Data" wchich of course should be copied into the directory I have EB installed , to overwrite existing files, and the "TempFixes" which includes the following zips:
- CTD Fix for EB vo[1].81
- descr_settlement_plan
- edct
and something called "ModestyPatch.exe".

My questions are:
1. what are these TempFixes and how should they be used? Are these the fixes that previously were to be downloaded independently? (Oasis fix etc.) and they should be used on;ly as a temporary solution to get over some CTD that occur in the game?
2. What is that "Modesty patch" and when and how should it be used, as when I started its installation a warning appeared saying that this will modify my EV to a degree that in order to get back I'll have to reinstall my EB again...?

Ouch... I realised that this patch is probably incompatible with both First Cohort and Watchman's mods... which I have installed in my EB... :(
Do you know if there's available First Cohort and Watchman's mods that include the changes introducted by the v2 Patch?

Watchman

I've yet to even download the v2 patch, so three guesses if I've gotten the minmod reworked...

But you should really be asking about that in the mods' own threads, no ?

bovi
05-17-2007, 20:50
The temp fixes are the same as provided here, yes, and the use instructions should be the same. I haven't checked them myself though.

The modesty patch is a change to the Gaesatae and other naked units, giving them a loincloth. It is purely optional.

I have no idea about compatibility with unofficial mods.

Updated two weeks ago with a permanent fix for 0.81a V2. Could a mod please change the thread header to the title of my first post, so people see it's for V2 too?

Had a persistent CTD in the AI turn in my Karthadast campaign after I captured Rhegion using BI.exe and 0.81a with the Redmeth money script. Installed v2 (had forgot to do that... ) and the traits typo fix, and now everything works great!

I don´t know if this is the place to write this kind of thing, but this is my first post and I just wanted to thank everyone on the team for a truly great game! (Especially now that I got to continue my campaign! :2thumbsup: )

Dear EB team, I was close to complete desperation, when my Baktira deluxe campaign decided to CTD in 266:drama3:. Reloaded and varied the setting about 15 times. Still CTD....Finally found this threat and did as i was told to....Now guess who´s back annoying Seleuks on their Eastern border? Yes, me & my elephant riding, horse arching and phalanx forming friends from BAKTRIA...Thank you guys a looooootttt!

had a CTD in my romani campaign everytime i clicked 'end turn' in 134 BC, used the rebellion fix and that seems to have solved the problem!
However i am unsure if i should keep the fix on or revert back to the old data, as early post suggested keepin the fix in the script was the best thing to do. Any advice?

It's a temporary fix. If you don't mind having extra units available everywhere, keep it.

Hey, bovi, I need your help.

I downloaded the traits fix, because of a Carthaginian campiagn which I had a CTD with. Unfortunately my computer does not have any software which allows it to recognize the file. Could you provide me with the name of a software that would work so I can google it?

btw, the CTD has happened every time I get to good in a campiagn, and the only similarity is that it only happens when I hit the end turn button.
Has anyone reported this type of bug? If they have I'll look for the thread and try what they did.

Thanks in advance,
gran_guitarra

When the instructions say to unpack files, you can use 7-zip, which is free.

Tried that one the first time. Don't know if I did something wrong or what but I couldn't get it to work.
I'll try it again and if it doesn't work I'll post on the thread again.

Sorry I'm giving you such trouble, but I'm really not very computer literate and need help.

bovi
07-13-2007, 16:43
There are a number of other programs that can unpack it, among them WinRar, which has a free trial. You use 7-zip by running the program, open the packed file and drag the contents that display in the 7-zip window to another explorer window.

gran_guitarra

Okay, I did it using WinRAR. Thanks for the recommendation.
I'll check if it worked (fingers crossed), and if anything wierd happens I'll post it here.

Thanks Bovi.
