i am confused, the roman republic is called Res Pvblica Romana not Senatus Populusque Romanus???

RES PUBLICA ROMANA literally means "public thing" or "public affair" it was used mostly to designate public property (propery of the state) in opposition to private property. It is the origin of the word REPUBLIC.

Senatus Populusque Romanus translates "The Senate and the people of Rome" you have probably seen it as SPQR also. It was mostly used to designate the government.
