View Full Version : Why is diplomacy nonexistant?

Bribing never works (unless you pay 60,000+), offering/demanding settlements rarely works, Demanding/offering attacks never works, ceasefire never works, vassal never works, and alliances count for nothing.

What's the point of having diplomats besides getting maps and trade rights?

Was wondering the same...

Diplomacy ever works inthe first few turns until you've reached all parties, offered trade deals map info in exchange for cash then when things get ugly, diplomacy is out the bucket... Even a faction on the brink of extinction will refuse any offer of vassalage or ceasefire, talk of obstinacy....

Give us back some diplo...

Diplomacy works just fine for me, up until World War One starts early, then the AI apparently goes into Banzaii Mode.
I've traded, gifted, and demanded settlements quite a lot. Why, just the other day I gave Jerusalem to Russia in exchange for Riga, and was only too happy to take the Holy City back four turns later when it revolted, so I could take Stettin off the Pole's hands. Meanwhile I was making a bucketload of cash sacking the city :)
Summation being,
Diplomacy works fine for me. Maybe you arent trying hard enough. :whip:

Meh, it's just the way it is. We can just hope that with the next TW game it'll get better. We all know how it is, and they [CA] - and maybe with a slight chance Sega - probably know how it is.

The AI will be fixed in patch 1.2.

No offense, but you might be making too broad a statement there. It'll be better, I'm certain. But "fixed" is a judgment we can't make yet. (After all, it was going to be "fixed" in 1.1 too.)

After all, we weren't supposed to have the problem when the game came out :laugh4:

I do agree that this does need to be fixed though. Those people are way too stubborn.

It seems to me that the AI doesn't use any diplomacy except trade rights and map information on hard and very hard settings.

My first MTW2 game ever played on medium difficulty had plenty of diplomacy with cease fires, alliances, giving/requesting provinces in exchange of money, etc.

What difficulty? On vh I've never had that experience, and I've been "trying hard enough":inquisitive:

Yes, difficult level has a significant impact on diplomacy. It is much easier to get and keep alliances with factions on easy. When you're playing on VH you have to actively work to even maintain steady relations, let alone improve them.

Diplomacy works pretty well for me.

The thing that I think needs to be fixed it when you offer a ceasefire or demand a "surrender" they refuse, even is they have like I province left with a tiny army.

The AI is obstinate. If it doesn't want to do something nothing you do will make it do that. On the other hand if it wants something, such as a ceasefire, it is prepared to pay huge amounts of money for it. Diplomacy works for me insofar as I can milk the AI for zillions. Personally I don't really care if tiny factions refuse ceasefires or vassalage because I never offer it to them- I just destroy them. But I guess if for some reason you are disinclined to merciless conquest I can see how it would get up your goat. I suspect that the AI is programmed to be more antagonistic the more powerful you get.

I play M-VH, depending on the mood Im in. Sometimes I prefer not to have the entire world declaring war on me every other turn, y'know?

Doesn't campaign map difficulty influence every action the AI does on the campaign map, i.e. what units they train? I was thinking of playing a M/VH game but I didn't like the idea of fighting hordes of militia on Very Hard battles because the AI wasn't smart enough on the map to train the right units.

But, yes, diplomacy is quite broken. When I get to superpower status, the factions at war with me frequently come and ask me for ceasefires, but they tend to want 40,000-60,000 florins in exchange. Sorry, but I was under the impression that that the person ASKING for peace was the one who desperately offered money, not the one who was brutally beating them in battle?

Maybe they would rather die as their own people, rather than be subjugated into an alliance or vassalage with your faction.
