Does anyone know a way to get a faction you want to ally with to drop its alliance with a faction you are at war with so that you can ally with them!

The only way I know how to do that would be to get a ceasefire with the enemy. Shower your proposed ally with gifts and then when you initiate hostilities against your enemy hope that your relationship with the proposed ally is better than between the ally and your enemy...
It'd be nice if the diplomacy system allowed you to spread propaganda about an enemy which could affect the interactions between different factions. Success would depend on existing relations and your diplomat/spies skill at propaganda.

As stated by Sbroadbent, you should start by ending your war with the first faction, asking a ceasefire...
Then you should try to get as good a standing with the faction (giving gold, territories, trade rights or whatever...)
Then when you resume your attack, hope for the best...
That's the best way (and I think only way) to do it...
But I don't think it's worth the bother...It will cost you a lot and rarely have I seen allied faction strike together against me or even declaring war because I was at war with one of their allies...
In that matter, MTW2 is totally different from RTW in a diplomatic point of view...
Allying with a faction will not either end a war between that faction and another of your allies as it did in MTW... No more U.N.O. in MTW2...

If I understand you correct here, you are wrong. Allying with faction A while they are at war with Faction B who are your allies already will cause a ceasefire between A and B.

You understand correctly but I don't think I'm wrong...
From experience, this did not happen in any of my MTW2 games...
I used it a lot in RTW but having tried it a number of times in MTW2 did not work.
On an patched H/H campaign, I remember one time being allied with the Moors and Spain being at war with the Moors... I sent a diplomat to ask for an alliance with Spain (I was engaging Portugal at the time). That alliance was gratefully accepted (with some under the table money from my part) because Spain was getting between the hammer and the anvil from Portugal and the Moors. That alliance did get a ceasefire between Spain and the Moors as I expected it should to form a front to smash the Portuguese.
And that is just one example... Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but having played TW from the first Shogun, I think I know how to handle diplomacy, even if it lacks a bit of depth...:inquisitive:
