The two commanders of time.

Got to be Nelson - won a war in an afternoon and created a tradition that lives on over 200 years later, whereas Cathage, a flash in the pan. Hannibal won some spectacular victories, but the war counts not individual battles and it was Rome that ruled for several hundred years not Carthage.

The outcome of the battle says something about the commander, the outcome of the war about the empire...

Voted Nelson too, for the reasons mentioned in round 1 - both skilled at tactics, strategy, and inspiration

I find it rather pointless to compare generals of different eras, but to compare commanders who fought with entirely different methods seems absurd. I'm sure if Nelson had faced Hannibal on land he wouldn't have had a clue, and if Hannibal had been placed in command of ships then Nelson would surely have trounced him.

I think highly of Nelson, but still higher of Hannibal. His victories are stunning and his only defeat was inevitable...

Although Hannibal was an Admiral after he left Carthage.

I'm English and would love to vote for Nelson but I wholeheartedly agree with Oleander. Trying my best to be dispassionate, I have to go with Hannibal.

Nelson. Hannibal wasn't that great, he lost when it really mattered.

Nelson, Cannae was by far a better master peace then tralfalger.

Hannibal knew how to attain victory but not how to use it. Thus, I'd have to go for Nelson.

Hannibal Barca all the way for me. Although to compare a naval commander with an army commander seems rather long-drawn.

Fragony is right
As it's obvious that De Ruyter was the greatest Admiral ever to have lived.
