View Full Version : Wtf!? (aka "my captain died after Man of the Hour promotion")
I just won a heroic victory in one of my gallic provinces with 4 kluddargos against 2 batacorii, and was offered to adopt the captain as a family member. I accepted, and immediately he fell over dead, and his whole army disappeared. :furious3:
Why? :dizzy2: :help:

That happens sometimes - always has with RTW as far as I know. I thought it had something to do with the captain of the battle dying in the battle, but I'm not sure. I'd love to hear the right answer if anyone has it?
Oh - I'll retitle this for ease of reference - the title is a little vague.

Maybe a venture into the innards of the RTW program can tell you why?
indeed, it happened to me with vanilla rtw, and with other mods too...
could it be there are some numbered "slots" for "family members", the number of these slots depending of the number of your settlements, and if there is not a free slot (cause you have not enough settlements), the member disappear. It can happen even when you bribe some enemy general...
Possibly related to that problem we had (internal build only?) in which Gallic candidates for adoption dropped dead immediately upon being accepted?

I think it happens to all factions though - and in vanilla too. It'd be nice to know what causes it. Surely some of the basic RTW fora or modding fora here or at TWC would have someone who knows.
Thanks for the quick replies (and the retitle TA, sorry, I was a little surprised and frustrated).
I refought the battle, and was offered another adoption, but I didnt accept this time as the candidate was awful.
Obelics: I dont think its because I have hit the limit, as I have about a dozen settlements, and only about 6 generals. My family members tend to die before they have kids.

well, then i have no idea...

As for "WTF?!", I once had the misfortune that 3 of my 4 starting generals died after my first few turns in a Greek Cities campaign - playing with XGM. That was the end of all Greek military might, for I rely, have relied and always will rely on Mercenaries in early game... It's a Vanilla thing.
There seems to be a limit to how many generals you can have (including children). Your generals will not get any children if you have too many people in your family tree already (including adoptees and men-of-the-hour), and any adoptees you accept will immediately die as they can't fit in the tree. When someone dies you'll be able to have a new one. Perhaps the 4 turns per year of EB makes it easier to hit the limit; you'll have more adoptions in the start of the game, and everyone lives for a long time.
Adoptions and Man-of-the-Hour are RTW mechanisms for boosting your family size in line with your number of settlements.
In Vanilla, my very first ever Man-of-the-Hour died before receiving his promotion. I was utterly crushed.
I find that Man-of-the-Hour candidates seem to have better traits than Adoptions, I am constantly turning down scabby ne'er-do-well adoption candidates, so I consequently get a good supply of Men-of-the-Hour.
Is this just me losing my objectivity, or has anyone else noticed a difference in quality?

I know why he died.....alcohool abuse at the triumph party.
Just kidding....
He might of commited suicide, did he have the Gloomy trait? :inquisitive:
Does the size of the family tree count dead members, as that could account for it. I have had all potential adoptees and even new husbands dying instantly (my poor daughters are doomed to lifelong widowhood from the age of twelve...), and the only explanation can be that I have too many dead family members, so there isnt any room on the family tree. If this is true, then its self-perpetuating, as each time a new one is adopted, he dies, and takes up a space on the tree...

No, the family tree can be as large as you like, only alive male family members are taken into account (including male children I believe).

You're losing your objectivity. With some very rare exceptions, the traits offered are the same.

Maybe related, it happened to me twice that when I bribed a rebel settlement with a family member in it that the character died the next turn - I got the message "heroic death" in the faction announcements scroll. This was with a Casse and a Ptolemaioi campaign.

The number of Family Member/Generals you can have is calculted with the number of settlements you own, but i don't know the rate .
As an example as Arche Seleukia you start with many settlements, aand compared to that very few family members, as a result of that you gain Kanditates for adoptiona and men of the hour event every turn, unitl the rate Family members/settlenemts is on normal.

So the question is why is RTW doing this? Is it a bug? Is it happening when the captain died in battle? I don't think it is because you waited too long to answer the question.
And why do the generals die after being bribed? Is that a bug too? Is it put in place by CA so that you won't bribe them so much? Anyone know answers to these questions?
Not to mention for marriages/adoptions you can turn them down and know that the subsequent turns will offer more and pick and choose until you find one to your fitting, kind of like an acceptable suitor which in cases of ruling family I'm sure you had a wide selection to choose from.

I'm pretty sure I never saw this happening in vanilla RTW or other mods.
