Consider this your bible.

This is no ordinary history book, it's written with great wit, it's funny, and covers about the whole humanitarian disaster from 1850 till the early twenties. Livingstone, the Boer war, the slavery, France and England being pretty naughty, everything. What makes it so good is that it reads like a novel, characters are brought alive, fantastic battle reports, love it and so will you.

so grab it already

'The Scramble for Africa' is a good book. I have it. Next to it on my shelf is: The Fate of Africa: A History of Fifty Years of Independence (http://www.amazon.com/Fate-Africa-History-Fifty-Independence/dp/1586483986/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/102-3793796-7827333?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1176227607&sr=8-2): also a good book.

Another great book on a different topic is "Rubicon" by Tom Holland. This one is about the history of the Roman Republic.
