View Full Version : assistance in battle

The situation is as follows:
One of my cities is besieged by the AI. I relieve the city with an army led by a family member. Inside the walls my besieged army is led by another family member. In the battle screen I can choose that I want to control both armies manually, but nevertheless the AI takes control of the second army, which isn't very funny as the AI simply walks inside the enemy troops with devastating effect for my troops.
In one mod (unfortunately I forgot the name) it was possible to control both armies. Now my question is, if it's possible to mod the game to get rid of the bug?

Greetings Il-Principe,
I could be mistaken here, but maybe it wasn't a bug. If you made the selection that you control both armies, but then right clicked on the opposing army to see it's composition, and then clicked "start battle", then the battle would start without you controlling the second army. If you bring up the details on the opposing army, you must then re-select the AI or manual control, as well as night battle. They return to the default position if you look at the other screen.
Does that help?

thanks for the welcome!
Maybe this was my mistake as I might have not been reselected manual control. In my last battle I was able to control both armies, but maybe it was only as they were rather small. I'm still a bit confused, but thank you so far.:2thumbsup:

I have never been able to control a re-enforcement army if it contains a family member. I don't think that check box there works if it has a general.
You will have to position your armies so that this situation does not happen.

On my game at least 1.5 vanilla I can chose to control or not regardless of there being a family member in the reinforcement army.
If i wish to outnumber the enemy for a particular tactical advantage I always composite the second army without family ( coz they always seem to commit suicide charges ) and let them divide the enemy.
Or I control them, and use them as reinforcements by retreating archers when they are out of ammo etc.
I think that Celt was right in this, that if you check information when you return to the screen your options are back to standard and you have to re-check them.
Good luck.

Greetings Mightilyoats,
I don't remember if it was the 1.2 patch, or installing BI which gave me the option of controlling the re-inforcement family member. I'm reasonably sure though, that it is one of the two.
I hope that helps.

@Celt Centurion: I have Rome Gold edition (from eras). So it is 1.5. Each time I have tried in the past, a familie member led army would control itself... I wil try again. Maybe I can get it working.
Here is an interesting thought... If you attack an enemy with two armies, both led by familia, and you score a heroic victory. Will both generals get the benfit of the result? Can both generals gain traits like "good attacker"? If that is the case, you can train up generals quite fast, by training more than one at a time.

Hi mightlyoats,

Can both generals gain traits like "good attacker"?Yes I think it's possible! The game, in a reinforcement battle, seems to treat each general as a different leader of a different army so they seem to be able to both get traits out of the battle. Unfortunately, that needs confirmation as I try to avoid having any reinforcements in my battles, most of my armies are full stack and I don't trust the AI to handle them, so I am, sadly, yet to see it occur more than once. That time could have just been a coincidence.

Omanes, according to Celt Centurion, it is possible to control a reinforcement general. If I can get that right, I should be able to confirm this.
And you wouldn't need two full stacks. Just a full stack split in two.
