View Full Version : Observation - Does the game overestimate the strength of Pavise crossbowmen?
It seems like whenever they are present in a battle, the balance meter is disproportionally shifted to the side who has them.
They may have good morale, defense and melee attack, but in they end they are still missile unit.
Just now I defended a siege where I had 4 spearmen, 2 town militia, 2 crossbow militia and 1 general's guard. The enemy had 1 light cavalry, 1 town militia and 8 pavise crossbowmen units. Before the battle, the balance meter was at least 80% in favor of the attacker. :inquisitive:

While I'm not 100% positive how the game calculates the balance pre battle, I'm assuming it takes the sum of all stats (missile + defense + melee possibly also + charge, maybe not)
Reason I think this is because 2hp units in the unit file are all listed as displaying double the amount of actual defense they have.
Pavise xbows have high amounts of all of the factors and as such are likely to tilt the balance in the enemy's favor.
However that wouldn't quite explain why pikemen shift the balance dramatically too (most visible fighting the flemish pikemen early on)

It wasnt against milan perchance, was it? I've noticed those guys tend to fill virtually entire stacks with those things. All well and good, theyre very good in archery duels... but against heavy cav theyre just fodder.
It was an Hungarian enemy.

I think the game calculate the force of army base on their unit cost? As in M2TW (or all TW series) "better" unit = "higher cost" (or "higher value" )
I believe this also apply to the faction ranking while you check the relatively military power between factions as well.
And even we cant recruit general unit but they should have a very high hidden cost/value, possibly about the cost of other elite calvary.

I noticed exactly the same thing. Milan keeps attacking my HRE cities with ENDLESS stacks of Spear Miltia and Pavise Crossbowmen.
They are a bit overpowered though. I've sent my General with 30 men, and it took him some time and 9 men to rout a unit of Pavise guys, with no experience or upgrades at all. :skull:

I am not too sure but i think Milan is heavily rely on the militia/city lines of troops instead of professional/castle troops? Milan start with no castle and actually their militia lines are very reliable and cost effective imo.

The AI of Milan actually focuses on capturing Bologna and Florence, not Bern which is actually a rebel castle just up front. Weird.
