View Full Version : chariots.??
i hate them especially with cavalry. are they a wind up or is there a mod out there or file discription i can edit[which and how??] just to make them more realistic.?? they were never that good in real warfare so why in this game.
do they wind anybody else up because they certainly do my head in especially watching my general vanish in a blink of an eye..:furious3: :furious3:

What faction are you playing - and what chariot based faction is giving you the fits?
I have the exact opposite of your problem, I find my chariots too weak(of course I am playing the Britons)but even against other barbarians I find them to weak.

Chariots slaughter horses as they are supposed to. They also evaporate on contact in a head-on collision with a phalanx (as they are supposed to). IMHO, they are very well balanced.

better play with the greeks then. my gripe is they seem to overly powerfull against most units except phalanxes.

Tried to use chariots when played for Egypt and came to the conclusion they're totally useless.
Don't mod the chariots. They may be a major PITA now, but later, they are just a little nuissance. You can counter them with mass archers (fire arrows do wonders), or some heavier javelin infantry, like the velites or the auxilia after the Reforms. You can lay traps for them since they use a known patytern, they always try to flank you, usually from your left side. Position yourself where you have a forest on your left side, and hide some units in the forest (the Arcani lol). Conquer some more southern province and then hire mercenary Hoplites and watch those chariots getting crushed by your phalanxes. Try the wardogs. They are expendable and could keep the chariots busy long enough for you to dispatch the rest of the enemy army. Then you can proceed to kill them. I noticed that the chariots would not gladly charge on me if i have several Hoplite units. When i am dealing with an army that uses chariots, my phalanxes are always alert and on the move: i am constantly shifting them around to present their rows of pikes toward the chariots. Then they dont stand a chance. And i never ever allow my general to deal with chariots. His only purpose is to keep the morale high and to chase routed enemy units.
Tge AI never uses mass chariots (okok, the 'Amazons' do lol) so your 20-stack army is more than capable to deal with them :2thumbsup:
Y.
Never fight chariots on the open battlescape if you can avoid it. Always attack them in cities. Massed blobs of heavy infantry in those thin city streets will mulch chariots very quickly and easily. Any kind of horses vs. chariots will get eaten alive pretty quickly, so keep your cav away from chariots at all costs. I've had routing chariots kill my completely fresh and experienced generals before.

Maybe I'm just doing this wrong, but I tend to attack chariots shooting arrows with light cavalry. Yes, they produce casualties among my cavalry, but far fewer than if allowed to pepper my infantry with arrows. I notice that while an Egyptian army may have several units of chariots, they are rarely close together. 3 or 4 units of light cavalry cut them up rather quickly. On the other hand, Scyth Chariots (heavy cavalry) will cut up the light cavalry. If you have missile cavalry of some sort, send them against the bladed chariots. Yes, there will be casualties, but chariots do not come sacrifice themselves on my phalanxes very often. Last night, one unit of camel archers held off three units of Scyth chariots. He could have done more if not for running out of arrows.

Hi all
Jimmy...your first post summed up how I felt 16 months ago when I started. You dont say which faction you were. In my case it was Julii equites vs British chariots. Equites were commanded by a commander confident from wiping out Gauls. But whats this... sliced up by chariots that seemed to charge faster than equites could run. Carnage..absolute b* carnage.
Advice on forums gave me the answer. Massed infantry..particulary spears and some velites perhaps. Even peasants. Chariots have no defence rating..even the weakest troops can kill them..if they just stand still long enough.
Using chariots well comes from knowing how to destroy them. As a user...keep them moving..cut up enemy cavalry. As mobile archer platforms they can get onto high ground behind the enemy and kill kill kill. Then run away when threatened...and come back....and kill...well you get the picture.
good luck
to be honest a purchased the game when it first came out and have played it on and off since then. it was the juli cavalry[light and heavy] who they chewed up badly but the pontus chariots[heavy chariots with the horses with great big spikes on as well]. maybe time time clouds judgement but i certainly will not make the same mistake again as i had a roman general with a mainly merc recruited army. phalanxes cretan archers peltasts and hey presto wiped them out without hardly any casualties.
i just love this game and come back to it time and time again.
i would have to say this goes down in the list of top 20 games of ALL TIME.i would put it up there with elite, cannon fodder, sensible soccer, etc.

Jimmy,
Did you have your General and mercenaries upgraded with armor or even blacksmith quality weapons? That would make a difference if the enemy had the upgrades and you didn't. If the enemy had two or more upgrades, such as "gold" armor and weapons, while you just had "bronze" weapons and no armor upgrade, that would cause you to get chewed up rather quickly as well.
Just a thought that you may want to look at and consider.

Chariots are great, I love chariots. You are wrong though, chariots were deadly in historical warfare. And realistically, they slaughter cavalry. They are not that tough to kill though, my Urban Cohorts seem to be able to withstand they're little runs through my units and even get a few shots at them. Remember they rout easily. In addition, I think like one single elephant is capable of destroying an entire chariot unit.
mind you they must have breed all them chariot pulling horses from derby, epsom arlintgon winning stock because i aint EVER seen a routing unit move that fast of the battlefield rocket propelled light cavalry couldnt catch um.:dizzy2:

It's probably just me, but EVERY time i use heavy chariots (or scythed chariots) against infantry, the chariots knock a few people over but nevr kill them! I'd always been told that chariots slaughter infantry (exept phalanx) but they practically stop upon contact with the enemy and get massacred. If im only supposed to use them for killing cavalry then I think ill stick with spearmen and camels

Pissed off as usual:furious3:
They are much much faster than spearmen and camels, far more effective on cavalry, and frightens infantry. I use them as anti-cavalry. When enemies try to flank you with cavalry, use chariots to take out enemy cavalry, and then hit their archers with your cavalry. Just make sure your chariots are out of flaming arrow range as that does a number on their morale. With the archers gone, bring the chariots close so that enemy infantry are "frightened by enemy chariots." When their morale wavers, send the chariot in for the mass-rout.
