Gates?

Hello I'm new to the game and new to this forum and I started playing M2TW and during one seige battle, I was fighting against the French as England and after destroying their attempts to sieze the wall their calavry just walked up to my gate and opened it. My gate wasn't damaged or anything (if I remember correctly) and it was in tact.

Now I"m wondering, was there something else at play or can you just open it and I never realised that? Because in my experience I had to use a battering ram or catapults to destroy the gates then I could enter.

If you get a spy into an enemy city/castle, there is a chance they can open the gates. It sounds like the French had a spy in your city and that is how they got the gates open.

The French & Milanese are spy spammers, even more than the others it seems. Helps to have at least one skill 5 or above spy of your own in your border settlements.

But then again, you would get the message at the beginning of the battle telling you that your gates had been opened.
Mind you, I've had many battles where my gates have been opened and the AI still tries to take the walls and goes nowhere near the gates.
