View Full Version : How To Create Names?

I'm pretty much the biggest novice at this modding thing. ie never done any. I'm surprised I was skilled enough to register without screwing up.
I have Europa Barbarorum because I'm quite into my historical accuracy, but I don't like the way the Roman names are done (being very picky).
eg Lucius Cornelius Scipio in the game will go on to have a son by the name of Billy Bob Scipio or something similar, whereas the Cornelius Scipio should be passed on instead - Billy Cornelius Scipio
Basically I want to create some new names for family members that can be passed on in the Roman faction, as well as change arround some of the names of the starting characters.
Can anyone help me?
Virtual high five is up for grabs.
Also, if it ain't too much trouble, how do you play around with character portraits? Like, change them.

I have Europa BarbarorumQUOTE]
Take heed of this! If it's impossible to mod a mod then how to do it on RTW original or whatever would still be greaaatly appreciated.

I do not think it is impossible to mod a mod
I'm afraid names are a little over my head to make a tutorial for right now, but I can help you with the character portraits!
Portraits are not faction based, but culture based, and so the portraits are grouped by culture, and not faction.
character portraits are found in the data/ui/(the culture's portraits you want to change*)/portraits
you'll only need an image editor that can save in tga format and some art skill that some might call "MAD ART SKILLZ". :D
one character portrait will have three counterparts. for example, general portrait 000 will have versions in these four folders:
data/ui/(culture)/portraits/cards/old/generals
data/ui/(culture)/portraits/cards/young/generals
data/ui/(culture)/portraits/portraits/old/generals
data/ui/(culture)/portraits/portraits/young/generals
note that the files in data/ui/(culture)/portraits/cards are 44x63 pixels
while its counterparts in data/ui/(culture)/portraits/portraits are 69x96 pixels
this is important if you want to edit a batch from portraits/cards and then resize and save them to portraits/portraits and vice versa. :)
good luck and welcome to the world of modding!

I think the names (or at least apparent surnames) can be more tightly controlled using traits and epithets have a look at this:
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=62388
and see if it helps.
You also need to make sure you understand how EB is working at the moment
you only get a first name and a surname (which can be replaced by epithet) so make sure you understand which the 'Bob' is coming from.
(you might have more fun trying to get that to work under EB than vanilla as I think they already have a very extensively revised trait system)
I have Europa Barbarorum because I'm quite into my historical accuracy, but I don't like the way the Roman names are done (being very picky).
eg Lucius Cornelius Scipio in the game will go on to have a son by the name of Billy Bob Scipio or something similar, whereas the Cornelius Scipio should be passed on instead - Billy Cornelius Scipio.
The tutorial Makanyane linked to ought to be of use, but I think you'll be much happier with Roman names in the next EB release; they'll work as you describe above.
