View Full Version : Curse of Monkey Island
I saw that Gamespy listed the intro to this game at #24 on their "25 Most Cinematic Moments" in gaming. I had forgotten how excellent this game was. The hand-drawn art was immensely well done and it created the proper atmosphere better than almost any other game I have played. The perfect steel drum music that pervaded the game further added to create wonderful Pirate/Voodoo/Caribbean feelings. I really wish that Lucasarts had stayed with this system rather than jumping to the relatively poor (IMO) 3D system in Monkey Island 4.
Ah... what I wouldn't give for a Monkey Island 5 that was made like Monkey Island 3.
Here's the intro to the game from Gamespy. If you haven't played the game, you have to watch it. If you have played the game, you have to watch it for nostalgia.

Look! Behind you! A three-headed monkey!
I loved the first three games! Played them over and over. The fourth I didn't finish; it was awful. The third game has always been my favourite; I played it first, I adored the visual style and music, and it had Murray the talking skull. I still have the little postcard with a picture of Guybrush climbing up to a crow's nest brandishing the cursed ring at LeChuck pinned up on my computer room's wall.
Watching that intro brings back so many memories. I'm happy to find that the voice acting truly was good, and that I haven't been deluding myself all these years. It's still funny, too.
Anyone know if Curse works on XP?

I played through the first two again recently. Brilliant stuff, and I caught a lot of jokes I didn't notice when I was a lot younger. Timeless, who needs 3d?

If anyone still has the first two games, please contact me and we can talk about them as I would say I am the most fanatical Pirate here! :2thumbsup:

I think it does actually... if not you can just download the ScummVM (http://www.scummvm.org/) and they all run on that one. It's a hoot to play the first one as well!
For me 1st and 3rd are the best, followed closely by the 2nd. Even Escape wasn't that bad, it just was a big step back compared to the first three (and graphically a huge step back compared to Curse).
I read an interview with Ron Gilbert not too long ago in which he said he wouldn't mind making a Monkey Island 5... here's hoping!! :2thumbsup:

Shhhh! You'll give away my secret identity!!! :pirate2: ~;)
I now finally understand what people like about Monkey Island. People had told me about it, and I read some stuff here and there, etc., but now I'd tried the demo, some old free DOS demo, and MAN.... it's-- it's.... beautiful *__*
It really got my interest now and I intend to buy it somewhere starting with the original. Anybody know there are any versions for sale for modern systems that just run fine? Or better yet I don't even mind the super-old DOS version.
Great fun, Grim Fandango>any monkey island game though. No game has ever come close to the charm of this title, except perhaps Beyond Good&Evil.
VIVA LA REVOLUTION!!!

Isn't the first games abandonware now?
I think they're still protected. No matter, though. Somebody I know who knew somebody else had a copy :)
Nice video game, but it's a bit long-winded to make progress. Sometimes ya just walking around in circles looking for the answer. Luck is one of those things when you by accident discover a solution. Walking around in circles ain't fun, and it forces me to lay it down. Still, good stuff.

I honestly didn't see what was so cinematic about that. But I absolutely love GameSpy for putting MWII at the number 2 slot. Much love for MWII <3
