clans, era's, units - Historical Japan

Looking at making a selection of campaigns in different era's,
with different objectives,
and different units

where i have stated "clan X represented by clan Z",
that means I dont have clan X in the game,
but i do have a large chunk of members of clan X as part of clan Z,
so I will use clan Z and simply promote the members of clan X to be the Daimyo of clan Z.

(The Taketora clan are an amalgam of Historical and Fictional Characters,
backed up by an array of historical heroes who dont fit anywhere else.
I think you'll like them)

Taira Revolt 939 - 941
in 939 Fujiwara Sumitomo and Taira Masakado led revolts In Iyo and Shimosa against the Fujiwara. Soon afterwards they invaded Harima and Bizen. The revolt quickly spread throughout the whole San'yo region.

Imperial forces led by Ono Yoshifuru and Minamoto Tsunemoto pursued Fujiwara Sumitomo to Dazaifu where he was defeated in battle at Hakata. Sumitomo then fled to Iyo where he was captured and executed by Tachibana Toyasu.

Not sure if an early samurai mod is still planned but I've scanned a couple of maps from a superb book I own called "A Cultural Atlas of Japan" by Collcutt, Jansen and Kumakura.

The first shows the location of notable clans from 10-12th Centuries and, if anything, it shows the futility in trying to tie clans to the old provinces during this period - clans were small and based in fortified mansions in villages/towns. Just look at how many clans are crammed into provinces of the fertile Kanto, Nobi and Kansai plains:

Second map shows the location of major private "shoen" estates during the early period which can yield a few more clan names. Note that all non-shoen lands at this time belonged to the state/imperial court so can't be assigned to clans:

You're welcome to try and shoe-horn this into a Risk-like province map of Japan but I'm afraid it won't really resemble anything historical! ;-)
