Giveaway: M2:TW signatures.

Greetings All !

Last December I made some signatures for myself, as I noticed I'd taken hundreds of screenshots during one month of playing this game. Don't even ask me how MUCH space that took up on HD.

Anyway I posted some of the shots at the .org and with a few I made myself some sigs, and here they are.

If anyone wants to use them please feel free to do so.

Be aware that my GFX card is old and the quality isn't that great but if you like one, go right ahead and use it. Remember to check if the size is 500*150, 10KB max (as per the forum rules).

If you do use it I'd prefer if you uploaded it to your own imageshack, photobucket etc. But if you have to just copy the link and paste it.

As my favorites are Turks, and I love horses, most of these images reflect that. Some have my name on them, this can easily be removed in Photoshop though, so help yourself if you want to.

I've added a brief description of what's happening in each shot, in case it's not obvious to all.

Sorry some are slanted, I might figure out how to change that, but I don't know how right now.
I'd do you an HRE one, but my GFX is le suck. I fried the one I took those screens with and now I have some junk in here, might still be able to pull it off. Do you want one ? You'd probably be able to do a better screenshot than me. You have a better system.

Well, the first thing I'd say is take the initial pics on much higher settings.

It really doesn't matter how laggy the game is, as you can always pause it to get the pics smoothly.

I'd also advise a border around the sig, and maybe less of the white 'glow' effect around the top, if that's your doing...

Excellent shots, Sinan. You have something of a pro photographer...

About your questions :

smaller size - open the image in IrfanView (you have it, don't you?) and save as jpg - it will open a dialog box letting you adjust the compression level, just drag the slider to the left, about 50-60 should do it for a 500x100 pic.
If that's not enough, remember that jpeg compression works best when :
- the image has large portions of a single color (so use "emptier" screenshots)
- there's fewer colors (adjust color tone until you get it)
- not many sharp edges (blur it a little)
You'll lose sharpness and quality, but eventually anything will fit in 10kb - see samples below.
The last image is one of yours, brought under 10 from 32kb. It doesn't look as good, but it's okay for a sig. The text isn't very readable, so you might want to use thicker/larger fonts and better contrast for the quotes.

borders - well just drag a rectangle in whatever color making sure the size fits the image and the fill is disabled ; for more elaborate borders, you could, for example, crop out the inside of an image, leaving just the outer 5-10 pixels on each side ; then place it over your picture setting the inside color (black, white, whatever) to be transparent. Or do something else entirely :beam:

EDIT : I forgot about his - I have a question of my own : Does anyone know how to get the camera lower than it's default minimum height ? Some screenshots need to be taken almost from the ground level.

You can zoom a lot closer. You'd have to install the unofficial 1.20 and enable the movie cam. I've read some conflicting reports about how well it works. I don't have a link handy but will do a search and repost.

If you want to add a border in photoshop, create a new layer, select all (ctrl+a), edit > stroke > outside (1px) should do it.

I play HRE, but you probably assumed this already. ~;) My favorite unit is most definitely Gothic Knights. Like I stated in the favorite unit thread in the entrance hall, there is something about beautiful heavy armor coupled with powerful steeds and a lance!

Just guessing by your signatures, you seem like a calvary man yourself. What is your favorite Turk unit? ^^

Yes that's true, they are very majestic those Gothic Knights. I always build Armories everywhere whenever I play a Catholic faction, I like playing the HRE too, I LOVE those 2Handers, Forlorn Hope, Gothic Knights. Set those up with a few Basiliks and just enjoy the show...lol.

In early Islam it was considered unmanly to offer yourself such protection, when the armor of God was omnipotent. Well fortunately they changed that sometime later. But there are some heroes who fought and defeated Byzantines, Paladins, Crusaders, without any armor at all. In fact even at Saladin's time there are illustrations of warriors without armor, generals even. They did fine anyway. Later they were armored too, it's a myth that they did'nt use armor, but it's fact that it was'nt to Gothic or full plate level.

I'm a cavalryman for sure. I like mobility and range, so horse archers would have to be it. I guess Mongol Heavy Horse Archers, Turcoman Horse Archers, Khan's Guard, Mamluk Archers. I get bored walking around.

Actually my vanilla favorites have now been eclipsed by Broken Crescent units such as Heavy Turcoman Archers, the various Persian very HEAVY (in fighting skill) cavalry. Just too many to name. I know that very well, as I posted in the thread, I had a Teutonic Knights' guild headquarters in Hamburg with an armory capable of producing full plate. Though I love the more streamlined look the DFK gain from full plate.

Awesome Byzantine pictures! I'm a Byzantine fan but not that huge of one. That very first sig makes me wonder about that though... lol. Good pictures like always.

If you'd like to try some Russian sigs that would be interesting. I'm thinking Tsar's guard doing their thing in the Black Forest map sunrise heavy fog.... lol. My favorite factions Russia so my sig would have to represent that and well.. I have Czar at the begining of my name... lol.

Once again though.. thosse Byzantine pictures are great. I'm sure you could make some good Russian sigs to. Your pics make me want to take screenshots, unfortunately my computer can't read the TGA format.

I'm getting the screens from a guy who has a max rig with most new skins etc installed. The base is good so you can build on it. That guy is an artist, he takes great screens.

Your specs for the sig are:

Tsar's guard
Black Forest
Sunrise
Heavy fog

If you want to read TGA you can download Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/). It's free. the base image is the most important thing, the better it is the better it can be manipulated. It's even better if you can take the image yourself, that saves asking another person, but it's not obligatory.

Questions:

What text do you want ?
Do you want close up or panorama ?
One or two men or a unit of Tsar's Guard ?
Combat or non combat ?
If combat what enemy ?
Banners or no banners ? (no banners is clearer for close)
Could you be more precise on "represent Russia well" ?

HAHHAAHAH !!! REALLY glad you like it mate ! The purple is Tyrian Purple, THE original Byzantine color. It's hard to get that on screen (at least for me lol) anyway I think it's pretty close to the Byzantine purple. That took FOREVER to make, like hours. BELIEVE IT OR NOT !! I'm getting the hang of Photoshop though, now all I need to do is learn another style ! or a few !

If you want quoted text on it etc just let me know, I'll try it. You did'nt say... should I try to get a MAXimum quality image of Vardariotai ? Did you see the one with the Persian Lancers ? You HAVE to see that, look in the spolier in my last post. Latest unit release from Broken Crescent.

Thanks for the feedback ! All feedback is good even if it is "damm ! that's lame !" At least you get an idea of what you can improve. Also when you look at the same image forever you sometimes become devoid of perception, so it helps if you can see through another's eyes.

That's no problem mate, I'll do it for you with pleasure. I was waiting for you to get back to me with a quote. I enjoy doing this. Are you going to take a screenshot ? You can host it simply when you hit "Add Reply" (not quick reply), there is an option at the bottom of the screen to host images. Just click browse and host it. If you prefer you can open an account (for free, which is what I have done) @ www.photobucket.com, then you can use this account to host your images whenever you want to post something on the forum, sigs etc. The monthly bandwidth is 25GB IIRC and that's very decent.

Let me know about the screenshot, as soon as you can. Otherwise I can ask someone with a pumped rig to take one for me. That's not an issue at all. If you take it, make sure it's the absolute best you can do. Try to get the main object slightly off center of the lens, this gives space to move the object around and also to insert text. Also depends what you want, if you want real close up, panorama, or normal range. The base image quality is important as this determines to a very large degree what the end result will be, but remember I'm a n00b so don't expect too much ! If you want me to find an image let me know asap. These are examples of good screenshots. The positioning of the main object in these shots is not ideal for sig making, but the base quality means that these screenshots are basically a CLEAR, WHITE canvas. You can manipulate them graphically in any way conceivable.

I'll try to take a screenshot. I haven't downloaded the thing that makes TGA readable but there's some issue with my computer. M2TW plays on one computer while the interent works on another. It's a very perplexing problem that I've often tried to fix and haven't been able to. Just a thought. If I send the screenshot to myself and dowload the file that makes TGA readable to my computer with internet would that work? Perhap's we'll try. Well. I'll take the screenshot and try it and go to Photobucket. My screen won't be taken for a while but I'll get it done. Unti later.

Actually I was'nt working on your sig, I was working on a cavalry comparison chart, and I found these in the process. Right now I'm outsourcing my screenshots, as my GFX card is not that great. So I have someone else take the shots per criteria defined and I sig them.

I do play but Photoshop is more fun than TW ! I like doing more creative things like this, or strategies etc. I do play in between an hour here or there. I'm annoyed that my better GFX card is fried (must have said that 100 times). Sometimes I take a whole day off, get some delivery food and catch up.

I'm expecting it to be quite quick to do this as the base quality is pretty high. I'll post back once I'm done but give me some time coz i have tonnage of stuff going on today (so I really should'nt be posting!). LOL.

BTW Montjoie does that mean mon joie in old French ?

Not really Montjoie cannot be translated as "my joy" or anything of the like... I've known the source of that rallying cry but I've lost it in the mists of time...

In fact the term Montjoie is derived from the latin Mons Gaudii which refers to markers on the pilgrims way ...

Saint Denis was the patron saint of the French King and protector of the Kingdom...

thus the Cry of Montjoie Saint Denis meant something like Follow or Rally on Saint Denis (that is the banner of Saint Denis under which the army fought...)

My two cents of history...

[EDIT] The cry was first used in 1124 when Louis VI the Fat (LOL... in game it would be Prince Louis the Merciless at the start of the French Campaign...) went to war to stop Henry V of HRE conquering Reims

Wow! Stellar work so far. It's really interesting to see how your work has developed through the life of the thread. You've improved noticeably.

I think I've come up with a request that seems untapped so far. Namely, Denmark! How about a sig of some Norse War Clerics? I'd prefer fairly tight shot (say medium-close), and preferably combat against some interesting infantry unit. Maybe one of the uniques from a natural Danish foe? I'm thinking it might look good in a settlement with buildings for backdrop, but that's certainly not necessary - I'm cool with whatever is in the background when you come up with a sweet screenshot. Not sure what text I want on it besides "Foz"... so if anyone has any ideas, just shout 'em out, I'm listening.

Wow Sinan... you weren't kidding when you said how much fun this is. I sat down to see if I could figure out the cinematic editor... and before I knew it, I had a camera set up and rendered like 10 GB of game footage, lol. I grabbed a screenshot of a scene I liked, cropped it, slapped some effects on it, added text, and saved a JPG. It feels funny, though, that from 10 GB of game footage, the end use is a mere 10 KB. That's something like a 1,000,000:1 ratio, isn't it? It's pretty hilarious to think about.

Anyway, I guess that means you don't have to worry about my request! Sorry if that steals your thunder or anything, I didn't really mean to, it just kinda happened. OTOH, it looks like you have plenty of requests rolling in to keep you busy. Speaking of those, I'll see what screenshots I can get to since I've gone to the trouble of learning how use the cinematic editor.

This one will probably be quite hard to do (or maybe not, I don't have enough disk space to work with the Cinematic Editor or even FRAPS so... I have not one clue, really. Like that's ever stopped me from talking) but here's one shot I'd like.
Picture this : close up on a French lancer or noble knight, dismounted during his charge on a pikewall (maybe fully upgraded Tercio ?) in that head-over-heels move knights sometimes do on impact, with the shot taken when he's halfway off his saddle.

Extra points if you can get frame/angle it in a way that looks like he's going to fly right into another pike.

And the caption ? Why, "God's bum !" of course ! :yes:

Well I would still very much like a sig if it's not to much trouble. (How would I upload it? Hmm..) It'd be good to show support for the fellow cavalry nuts lol. I'm thinking a group of Tsar's guard charging (for enemy polish somethings...), with the armour upgrade (masks.) in Black forest, heavy fog, sunrise etc. For a saying how about... Yeah... I dunno much about how to get fog into a pic, lol. I'd have either picked the 3rd pic that showed the fog in the background best, or else have given up on the fog effect. Even in the end result you just posted it isn't very evident that there's fog. I probably would have just opted to highlight the interesting light patterns hitting the horses and riders through the treeline in one of the shots and forgotten about the fog entirely. Maybe darken the shadows a bit extra to make the difference more apparent, too.

Your second effort is a way big improvement over the first one though, so cheers for that. And the one for Tristrem I really like!

First I have to say all those pictures are awesome. Very good work.
The 1870 painting of a Finnish soldier is pretty nice...

I've got a little job to offer if you are up to the challenge...
It's a charging hakkapeliitta, or maybe 2 or 3 of them. Yes, I know there are no hakkapeliittas in MTW2. And I'm pretty sure you have never even heard of them.
A hakkapeliitta was a Finnish cavalryman fighting for the Swedish king during the Thirty years war, for example. They were lightly armoured riders armed with two pistols and a sword. Unlike their peers, these men fired two volleys at close range and then charged the enemy, using their horses as weapons as well as swords.
They greatly resemble the reiters in MTW2. Reiters got only one pistol and a spear though.. With some skill and time one could edit a picture of reiters to look like hakkapeliittas.

Sig Request

- 2-3 Reiters
- At least one firing a pistol
- One with a sword if it's possible
- Armour: the non-upgraded reiter armor is fine although the non-upgraded arquebusier outlook would be cool.
- At least one riding a white horse, if possible
- no rider wearing those ugly yellowish pants they sometimes have

- Landscape etc.
- Something like Thirty years war landscape; Lombardy seems pretty good.
- Weather clear, time aftenoon.

- Misc.
- Preferably no enemies visible
- Hakkapeliittas charging obliquely towards the camera (not directly towards)
- Text "Cut them down!"

Those were only some kind of guidelines. Feel free to use your creativity and imagination. Who am I to restrict artists' freedom of creation?

Something that is good is always worth waiting.
Let me explain what I meant with the armour part; The basic reiter armour is fine since some hakkapeliittas had a breastplate and a helmet. It would require least editing. Some had a breastplate and a funny hat like those of arquebusiers. Some were unarmoured and most likely resembled MTW2's arquebusiers. Those unarmoured riders would probably require most editing.
--> They may look like reiters or like arquebusiers or something in between. For example; If you have 2 reiters you may take the other's helmet and give him a funny hat or let them both look like original reiters. Or you may fetch an arquebusier's shirt and give it to a reiter. Its fine for me any way; They all seem to be historically accurate. It's up to you; you are the artist.

The reason why I wanted one white horse to the sig is that the hakkapeliittas rode finnhorses. White finnhorses are extremely rare, almost a legend of some kind. May I add a little requiest? No more than one white horse please? They wouldn't be rare if every cavalryman rode them.

Just a little note. I cannot handle any further requests submitted after this post, for a while. This thread coupled with sigs I'm doing for the Broken Crescent mod is taking all my time and as much as I'd like to, I would'nt be able to complete any more for like at least a week I think. Probably more because I have a few other things to complete as well. Of course if anyone else wants to carry on, just step right in.

Unfortunately I can't use it here, but anyway I love it ! ALL feedback most appreciated. how can it be improved ?

Actually, you CAN use it, Sinan. My inquiries about raising sig size limit have turned up a very useful tidbit: in the User CP, there is an option under Edit Options->Thread Display Options->Broadband. It's a tick box to enable yourself as a broadband user. Ticking it to "On" allows you to see a second Signature image for any user that has one listed, and this image is allowed to be 500 x 200 and up to 100KB. You'll find your slot to list that larger image under User CP->Edit Profile->Additional Information->Extra Signature Picture. I have one up right now, which you should be able to see if you enable yourself as a broadband user. It's nothing fancy, just a screenshot that I resized to the appropriate dimensions to screw around with it, but should let you know if you've done everything correctly.

With this new discovery in mind, perhaps this thread can now include larger sig shots up to 100KB? I'll let that up to you of course, but it might be cool to let users specify which they want designed, and to sorta promote the broadband signature picture slot as a result.

That's very true actually ! I knew this but never used it for myself. Absolutely if people want to use the 100kb limit that's waaay better to work with. I have always had the broadband selection on and you're the first one I see the second sig for. It's neat ! Beautiful colors.

Hmm I will resize further. But I think maybe for juniors you might not be able to use it at all, I'm not sure though. I only thought of that because it says "You may not link to external websites in your signature." Anyway I will resize it again (with further loss of quaity).

As in "render clouds?" That's what it looks like to me :smile:

If so, then yeah you're getting the idea! I actually was able to get one of my desert shots to look foggy by rendering clouds in a new layer and playing with the brightness, contrast, and opacity of that layer. Helps a lot to desaturate the sky too, as a cloudy sky becomes really murky and fog-like if all the colors are removed. Glad to see you're getting good mileage out of the cloud rendering.

Patience. I'm guessing that as a junior member you can't link to an outside website for your sig because sig spam could become a problem w/ some junior members. The time required to become a regular member is not too much IIRC, and getting that far means you can be trusted more as a serious forum member instead of potential trouble-maker. Not that anyone thinks of you that way Shifty, I'm just trying to explain the likely cause for such a rule (that is admittedly frustrating when you're new). I'm sure it really does help keep the forum a lot nicer/cleaner than it might otherwise be. Don't worry though... one day soon when you're not really thinking about it, you'll realize you got upgraded to member status, and then you have a much longer leash including exterior sig links.

In other news, while Sinan is out of action I can at least try to keep the ball rolling by providing screenshots for people's sig requests. Heck, I may even complete some requests if he doesn't get back to it for a bit. So if you have something in mind for a sig, just drop the request in here like usual or leave a screenshot request in the screenshot request thread, and I'll get started on the screenshot. Note that it's recently been brought to light that everyone has what I'm calling a Sig+ picture slot that can be used for an extra sig picture up to 500 x 200 and 100 KB. Needless to say you can get tons better quality from a 100KB jpg than a 10KB one, so from now on requests can be made for either one, and you should make sure to specify the size you want when requesting something so as to avoid confusion. Anyone interested in seeing the difference can check out the link in my sig to enable the sig+ pics and have a look at mine. It should be pretty obvious how much better the second one is. :smile:

Oooooh... it's like having my name in lights! Only that would usually mean I was getting paid a lot more :yes:

I especially like the light effect you added in Kobal's shot. I wasn't aware that they had invented electrified pikes in medieval times, though. But then again I guess those Spanish are crafty, and lord knows the tercio is one of the premier pike units of the time, so I wouldn't put anything past them! Still, it looks like that should hurt A LOT more than the silly pointy end of the pike. So, no wonder the guy went flying. Ouch!

On a related note... How do I get those in the campaign?!?!? Is that what weapon-upgraded pikes look like? I mean I know the upgrade gives a +6 attack bonus, but jesus...

Next thing ya know my knights with weapon upgrade will turn into Tesla Tanks. Oh wait, that whole unit evolution thing is a Civ gimmick. NM. Though it might be nice to have a Tesla Tank in M2TW especially for those pesky assaults. Can you see those zaps of electricity going through the portcullis to barbeque the men trying to defend it? Oh yeah, I smell a mod coming on. Medieval 2: Red Alert? Maybe Command & Conquer: Total War. I'm open to suggestions.
