I have lots of questions, and before you start saying "go look at the scriptorium", i have looked thoroughly through all of the pertanent ones. these questions come from lack of ny previous answers. if i have missed something in those files, then go ahead an redirect me! :laugh4:

First, I have followed the directions for adding more hidden resources, but whenever i have the game generate a new map.rwm, the game will not run, it crashes when i click on a faction to start the imperial campaign. I noted that whenever I do this map.rwm thing, 2 files appear in the creative assembly file.
1 is corrected_regions.tga or some such name, and I don't remember what the other one is. I have changed territory ownership in descr_strat.

Is it possible that I need to replace descr_regions with this new file...corrected_regions? I know its not part of the bi patch. I really would like to add some hidden resources.

Second question, what programs are needed to mod Rome Total War's every useful aspect? I want to go into depth with my modding but lack any of the necessary programs except notepad

Can the Marian Reforms be assigned to a date? i think its currently assigned to getting a huge city, but i want to change this to 107BC

Can you have more than 20 factions in Rome, they need not be playable, but will the game allow it?

Can the Marian Reforms be scripted or triggered to change all pre Marian Reform units to legionaries in your armies?

What files need changing to add new factions from scratch, including units? Will this also allow me to port existing factions from BI into Rome(Sarmations)?

Can the game's starting and ending dates be changed? easily?

And lastly, is it possible to have four turns per year, and is this relatively easily modded, and what files would this be changed in?

thanks for all of the help!

Not only the Scriptorium, did you check the modding answers too ?

IICRC, hidden ressources require descr_strat (hidden ressource in the beginnig of the text file) and descr_region modding
about "corrected_regions.tga", you don't need to modify it (if this file is out of the data folder, like in VBM for instance)
"I have changed territory ownership in descr_strat" Did you replace the garrison units too ?
Shoot ! I messed up EDB and descr strat. though I had the right part in mind, what I told you was quite misleading?
sorry

BI ? I don't think there's anything different in BI from RTW (engine wise)

Second question, what programs are needed to mod Rome Total War's every useful aspect? I want to go into depth with my modding but lack any of the necessary programs except notepad
vercingetorix Xpack extractor, some photoshop like programs and lots of patience, method and backups.

Can the Marian Reforms be assigned to a date? i think its currently assigned to getting a huge city, but i want to change this to 107BC
Reforms are also linked with the presence of imperial palace on italian soil

Can you have more than 20 factions in Rome, they need not be playable, but will the game allow it?
21 plus 1 rebel faction, hard coded IIRC
20 plus rebel... you should better listen to the other, wiser octopus here.

Can the Marian Reforms be scripted or triggered to change all pre Marian Reform units to legionaries in your armies?
I don't think so; if it were possible, the script should be sooooo long, I mean, in a first part, disbanding some armies, and recognizing which one to disband and in a second part creating new armies (that's possible) with the same composition (that is not)

What files need changing to add new factions from scratch, including units? Will this also allow me to port existing factions from BI into Rome(Sarmations)?
I pass, sorry

Can the game's starting and ending dates be changed? easily?
yup, descr_strat, begin and end year

And lastly, is it possible to have four turns per year, and is this relatively easily modded, and what files would this be changed in?
simple answer: four turns a year mod, in download section
implementing the 4TaY over another mod is another story

thanks for all of the help!

you're welcome
I just hope I haven't made any mistakes

I knew it... sorry
I'll try harder next time

If you look in the tutorials and do a search on the threads you will find the answers to all if not all of these. And you cannot add new visible resources, only modify existing ones.

To add a new hidden_resource you need to edit two files
1) EDB
2) descr_regions.txt (to give the new resource to regions)

Second question, what programs are needed to mod Rome Total War's every useful aspect? I want to go into depth with my modding but lack any of the necessary programs except notepad

You need a textediting program (notepad/wordpad/etc), a program capable of editing .tga and .dds files (photoshop/gimp/paintshop pro), and a moddeling program (3dsmax is the one you need to use)

Note: For the graphics program you will probably need a dds plugin as the won't by default regocnize a dds file

Can the Marian Reforms be assigned to a date? i think its currently assigned to getting a huge city, but i want to change this to 107BC

Unfortunately not. Marius reforms happen when a city with the hidden_resoruce italy builds an Imperial Palace.

Can you have more than 20 factions in Rome, they need not be playable, but will the game allow it?

21 factions is the maximum, but this must include the slave faction, so 20 other factions.

Can the Marian Reforms be scripted or triggered to change all pre Marian Reform units to legionaries in your armies?

Don't know but I don't think so. Pre-marian units do not "upgrade" to legions, they must be replaced (i.e. disband then rebuild), you might be able to script that but . . .

What files need changing to add new factions from scratch, including units? Will this also allow me to port existing factions from BI into Rome(Sarmations)?

Umm, lots of files.
You'll need to do all the textures and any models requried for the new faction.
-descr_stat.txt & other text files in the campaign folder
-EDB
-EDU
-DMB
-sm_factions.txt
-various files that display in game text
-the faction symbol tgas
-.rsd files for faction symbols

You'll also need to remove all references to the faction you are replacing.

Can the game's starting and ending dates be changed? easily?

Yes, if you open descr_stat.txt you will see the starting and ending dates just after the faction lists at the top.

And lastly, is it possible to have four turns per year, and is this relatively easily modded, and what files would this be changed in?

There is a 4 turn per year script that has been created, if you search for it you should be able to find it.
