View Full Version : At war with 8 nations

I am in the first decade of the 14th century and at war with 8 nations. I'm playing as Hungary and am now at war (and engaging in combat with) the Byzantines, Mongols, French, Milanese and HRE. I'm at war and haven't fought a battle in a almost a hundred years with Venice and Sicily. Moors just landed and attacked Genoa so war with them just started.
Is there not an automatic ceasefire with nations you haven't fought in forever?
Is it a bug that doesn't allow me to get a ceasefire with any of these people?
I offered to HRE: Ceasefire, Trade Rights, Map Information, Vienna and Innsbruck
No deal
I offered Milan and France the same thing: Ceasefire, Trade Rights, Map Information, Genoa and Milan.
No deal
Byzantines and Mongols I don't care about. I'm all about wiping them out. BUt I can't even get one of these other European Kingdoms to take a chill pill.
They can't beat me. I castrate every army they send into Italy (which is where they all seem to invade).
Just for fun I'm going to offer my whole empire (which includes Northern Italy, Innsbruck, Vienna and the Balkan/Greek Peninsula minus Constantinople which I'm besieging on the next turn).
Other than that. Do you all experience the same thing (being at war with everyone) or do you all somehow manage to maintain a good relation with at least a couple of your neighbors. RIght now Poland loves me, but I don't know what I've done to make that happen.

are you playing in VH campaign difficulty? if so it is possible the AI will reject most (read ALL) you ceasefire proposals...
Which game version are you using ?
You should use the search for "diplomacy".
You will find a lot of your answers that way. Hope I don't sound obnoxious, for example here's a fix if you are using 1.10:

If you are using 1.10, you need to change global AI parameters for diplomacy to "work".
It does not work in 1.10, the parameters for anything are too high. I can't remember what parameters influence the ceasefires, hopefully someone else can help with that.

On very hard yes you will be generally be at war with everyone. Do not expect anyone to ever give you a ceasefire when you request it in or become a vassal, no matter what you offer in return. The AI is programmed to hate you and the more powerful you get the more it will hate you. Some people can't stand it, as evidenced by all the posts in which people complain that the AI remains obstinately belligerant even when it is clearly beaten and is being offered huge amounts of money and territory, which is totally foreign to me. I for one cannot imagine giving anyone a cent of money or an inch of land when I can just wipe them out and take their land and money, and I enjoy spending centuries at war with my neighbours. That's why it's called Total War.
I only have a few minutes but I would like to add my two cents. Yeah, I used to play on VH on Campaign mode but I find the game more fun on Medium or Hard. If you don't want to be at war all the time, lower the difficulty to a reasonable level. Under medium and with the 1.2 patch, the AI and you will form powerblocks with alliances and stick with them. If you want a challenge, just keep the lower end countries when the option to pick between them comes up.

This has happened to me many times before. It was during my Sicilian blitzing campaign and due to my agressive nature at one point, I had every catholic nation except for Spain, England, and Scotland at war with me along with the Byzantines, Turks, and Egyptians. They all managed to form one grand alliance so it was impossible to broker to ceasefire. Just remember this, if you want to only go to war with a faction for one province or key position, broker the ceasefire quickly or before you know it they will suddenly get 6 allies that suddenly all declare war on you...

I'm playing VH/VH with the leaked update 2.
Like you I would prefer to just stomp everybody into the dust. But I am limited in my playing time. Now that everyone is at war with me I've been fighting at least three battles per turn. I don't want to autoresolve and I micromanage battles like a maniac. Ergo a battle takes me about 30-40 minutes to fight. Some days I cut on the game, fight two battles and have to stop there. Next time I get on the computer I fight another battle and do some civ management stuff.

That's probably why.
1. Your a nation that's sitting within the vicinity of several nations
2. You've expanded to the point where your reputation no doubt has fallen. When your reputation takes a hit, the chances of brokering treaties becomes harder. Even if you stick to releasing prisoners and occupying cities, going to war with catholic nations takes a hit.
3. Your playing on VH so your relationships are already plummenting.
I played as the Byzantines M/VH and once expanded up to the toe of Italy, nearly every nation within striking distance wanted a piece of me and by then my reputation was at mixed/dubious. I pretty much expected any allies I had to backstab me because of this and it was very very difficult to broker ceasefires.

I am playing a campaign now as the Danish. I am at war with England, France, Portugal, HRE & Poland. I love it!
Battles, battles, everywhere!

Giving hard to hold land to the Pope can sometimes allow me to take my focus off a particularly busy frontier. I could never make peace with a faction that attacks mine, and until 1.2 a ceasefire on vh only comes about if the enemy is reeling. VH battles and m or h campaigns are what I would do in 1.1 until the official patch comes out, if someone cannot bear to play the unofficial patch. Taking the 'tall poppy' characteristic out of the global parameter ai ai file helps a bit.
