View Full Version : Pontos factional units
Hey everyone,
I've recently started up a campaign as Pontos, and have been unable to create factional units in anywhere except my starting city, Apameia. From what I can see, I can't build any factional units the first 3 factional barracks (the barracks that costs 900, 3000, and 7500). This struck me as odd . ..so do I have to wait for a reform to build any factional units? Do I just have to build a bigger barracks? Or am I doomed to use foreign barracks forever, and forever use armies comprised of hellenic peltasts, militia hoplites, and mercenary wild men Galatians?

Pontos can train factional units by factional MIC level 3 or above in the following cities Amaseia, Mazaka, Sinope, Trapezous, Ani-Kamah, Ipsos, Sardis, Antiocheia, Edessa, Karathiokerta.
These are the cities I know for sure they can train their factional units. Only three of these (Amaseia, Sinope, Trapezous) allow the training of the highest end factional troops, such as Chalkaspidai. Only your capital allows the training of Galatian Lavotuxri, the best Pontic heavy cavalry available. Ani-Kamah allows the training of Horse Archers with a level 4 reagional MIC and most of the others have their recruitment restricted to Pantadapoi Phalangitai, Theurophoroi and Hellenic Scythed Chariots.
The Pontic recruitment zone isn't very large, and their factional units are limited at best. Some of the best Pontic recruitment comes from Ancyra with a level 5 reagional MIC.
The Pontic unit roster is sadly lacking. Something the team is well aware of. It will likely change in the next build though. Just build factional MICs in the cities I specified in the beginning of this thread and Reagional MICs everywhere else and you will be fine. There might be more interesting recruitment options if you conquer the Crimean Peninsula but having never held it I can't say for sure. The ones I listed however are the ones worth taking and building a factional MIC in. Remember that even with a level 1 gov. You can still build a level 2 reagional MIC, which in the case of the Greek cities like Sinope and Trapezous will give you some low tier greek units like Hoplitai Haploi and Hellenic Slingers.
Even with a full reagional MIC in one of the greek coastal cities the best troops your likely to get are Classical Hoplites.
Don't worry. These limitations make the Pontic army very different from any other and the combination Greek, Successor, Eastern, Steppe and Galatian units makes it one of the most versatile and effective fighting forces anywhere.
Thanks, The Errant. That helps out the war effort against the gray death a ton. :beam:
and they'll only become more versatile as we fill out anatolia...
just remember that they are intended to be a faction weighted toward regional recruitment. they have some nice factional units, but they can maximize regional recruitment better than any other faction, and anatolia is one of the best places on the map to have that ability.

BTW, there's a terrific new early general's bodyguard for them. :2thumbsup: I can't wait to get it in the next big internal build. Yippee!

Hehe. I'll just say that you won't have to worry about having a general who runs away in battle any more (as skirmishers do - since the old bodyguard was a skirmisher unit). Thank goodness! That alone might be the best part, but stefan has done a wonderful job with the unit too.

The story of Pontos as it usually goes: the Little Kingdom That (Thought) It Could... and the Grey Death.
:shame:
A tragic tale for sure.
