Don't hypaspists have swords by default as their primary weapons?

Yes, the alt+left click charge is a very good idea to use with cavalry. If they have a secondary weapon, they'll charge with their primary* (which usually has a better charge value) and then switch to the secondary (which is usually better in melee). It's good both for the few seconds they're in melee when you use them as a hammer, and especially when fighting other cavalry. It's just too bad the AI doesn't use it, though.
*If their primary weapon is ranged, be it as a prec or not, they'll charge with their secondary instead.

In my experience, secondary weapons on Cavalry are totally useless. They kill faster with their primary spears, even if its a Xyston (two handed spear)
I find secondary weapons better for horsemen in a melee fight, i use my Equites all the time for flanking and they seem to do beter with their swords then the spears when it comes to death rate of the enemy, even in horse vs horse battles the sword seems to do a bit better.
Edit: i was looking at the hetairoi card, and the spear has less attack(4) but higher lethality (.4) and the sword has higher attack(11) but lesser lethality (.11) so im not sure what this means, nor do i understand why the sword is more lethal enless it is only meant for the charge.

AP primary lances totally lose out to AP secondaries in my experience. And non-AP secondaries as well particularly if the opposition is of the annoying "two points of armour and high defense skill" type. And of course non-AP primaries - overhand spears mostly - sorta don't measure up to AP secondaries in most melee instances.
Sure, the Sahigan Pahrs' kontos may have a whopping 0.4 lethality and AP, but it also has like 200 attack delay and base attack value of 4. Their secondary non-AP sword has base attack in two digits (10 or 11 IIRC), no delay and 0.225 lethality - which one would you use when swarmed with axe-toting Daha skirmishers ?
The AI, not knowing how to use secondaries, of course opts for the first. Which in my experience specifically makes the Daha and Arachosians such an effective panacea to cataphracts...
Similarly most of the other cavalry heavies have either an AP secondary with two-digit attack values, or a non-AP one with usually even higher attack and not rarely a good lethality too. The lances have such sodding poor base attack values that even halving the enemy's armour usually leaves the secondaries better off in the attacker/defense number comparision...
