View Full Version : Do Scythians get Onagers?
I'm haaving a lot of fun with my current campaign. I made a treaty with Dacia, wiped out Thrace then turned on the Dacians. I had intended to go south and give those annoying macedonians their just rewards but the Germans kept biting me in the butt up north so now they must be destroyed. I'm having no problem with that, but afterwards I will go south either into Macedonia, or more likely Italy. The problem is i know i will run into walled cities and my armies generally consist of 2 or 3 axemen to push rams then a lot of HAs. I can't find a tech tree thread anywhere and the RTW-Gold guide didn't come with one, so does anyone know if the Scyths get onagers? I don't wanna havta rely on large numbers of axemen to try to take gateways to let my HAs in. The axemen don't seem that strong anyway. Thanks

Hi IceWolf,
Sorry, but I think that only civilised factions get Onagers. Sorry.
BTW, on the side of the settlement panel there is a button with a little compass, mathematical type, on it. Click, and open up the R:TW technological-tree for your faction! You can simply right-click on one of these buildings in the tree to see what it does/trains and decide if it's worthwhile or not for your plans of world domination! Hope this helps, cheers!

Hi,
It think that it must be, I don't think I've seen Sythia using them - I have always thought that only non-Barbarians can use them. I may be wrong however, sadly, I don't have a copy of R:TW on my machine to refer to. Sorry.

I'm playing for Scythians now, and I do have onagres. Only 1 type is available though (no "heavy onagres") but still.

I must be wrong then, my apologies IceWolf. I really do wish that this hard-drive had the space to fit R:TW on it as well as M:TW and S:TW - it sometimes gets quite irritating.

Scythians do have Onagers available in Custom Battles and presumably the Imperial Campaign too, in 1.5 at least.
I don't think any Barbarian faction has more advanced artillery like Heavy Onagers available though.
To be able to recruit onagers you need to build the archery range in a settlment.
Just as a note if you want to see the tech tree for a faction its one of the buttons on the settlement scroll. Pressing the button takes you to the tech tree and right clicking on a particular building will tell you what it will do for you if you build it.
Thanks everyone. I don't need no stinkin heavy onagers, just 2 or 3 pair of the regularss will do to create 2 holes and knock out an arrow tower. I have 3 German settlements left to take then i will move south towards Italy. The Julii have been nibbling at my left flank recently so it will please me to bring feathered death down upon them first :laugh4: Problem will be capturing a place with a seige range, it'll take too long to develop one at Campus Scythia and then move the things overland to Italy. My empire, large as it is, mainly consists of 3500 population mudholes spresd out over several turns travel apeice. The Scythes are fun to play, sorta like Parthia but with a btter infantry and a functional, albeit, small economy.

The quickest way to see what units a faction has available is to play a custom battle with them. Some of them also has mercenary units in custom battles (I think Macedon has Cretan Archers in fact) that you won't be able to train, only buy as mercs. The Mercs always wear green, so you should be able to figure out which units you can recruit.

yes,it is true,mightilyoats.
but i won't suggest that,i will suggest you get your units info from building structure browser,so you won't lose that "SURPRISE".
I LOST IT OREDI...:wall:

But you can spoil that surprise at any time anyway looking at the buildings... Ok, you are quite right.
But, let's assume that Icewolf, being a member since November 2006, has played the game for at least 6 months. That might mean he is not looking for a surprise, but for a well planned out campaign.
So, if you want a surprise, stay out of the custom battles.
If you want to plan your building strategy and army composition, why not go and check out what your are working with in the custom battles.
