Thank you for your kind, considered and overall useful post.

You're not the only one with this problem, and other people have done the right thing and opened up a support thread here (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?p=1529213#post1529213).

Please have a read of it - people are experiencing success after doing so.

Patch is pathetic for other reasons too Sapi . . . so there.

Are you interested in detailing the reasons that the patch is "pathetic", or is that the sum total of your arguments?

I think it should have had a shorter file name.:furious3:

I meant longer.

M2TW_(Medieval_2_Total_War)_Official_Patch_Version_1.2.01_Released_on_quattro_de_Maio

That was the name I wanted.

Thank you for your kind, considered and overall useful post.

Snide comments from moderators aren't that helpful either. Look, this was another sloppy release, and people are going to vent their opinions about that.

Edit: to contribute something useful -- totally removing the game, re-installing, then installing the patch worked for me after I got that error. This shouldn't have been necessary.

However, you'll find me much more receptive to that happening if people a) check around for a fix to their problem before complaining and b) post in a manner considerate of other members and the CA devs.

To put it simply - posting that you have issues/don't like the patch is fine, as long as you have reasons for doing so and don't abuse anyone in doing it.

Flaming, of course, is not on.

That's true.

I'm wondering, atm, whether the issue could have been something as simple as people having edited their descr_strat.txt file to unlock all the factions and the installer not realising this and failing.

Had you done so?

There's quite a few people having issues so I guess it must be something in common on all those machines. The fact it's working for a lot of people (who've vanished to play) also gives me the same idea.

rvg Have you tried uninstalling, and deleting all folders etc... and then reinstalling?

I've been trying to remember... it's been a while since I played this game (was waiting for this patch), but yes I think I did do that one mod for the game.

However, I'm skeptical about whether that could cause a total crash to the desktop. I'm wondering if it's something to do with the new game launcher. When I was getting that exception error (installing over the 1.01 patch), I never saw the new MTW2 launcher screen, with the poll questions and all that. It crashed at that point, which makes me suspect the launcher, before I even got to the main game.

And THAT makes me wonder about this new dot-net framework thing, and whether that's part of the problem... maybe something to do with the 'Net connectivity needed for the update notices, poll questions, etc. in the new launcher panel?

sapi

Well, if you suspect it's the launcher, you can bypass it by changing the shortcut so it points at "....medieval2.exe" instead of "....launcher.exe" - but I haven't heard any complaints about it with the unofficial patch.

.NET shouldn't make a difference either - I've had it installed the whole time with no troubles

Hey Sapi,

A little off topic but,

there is now no version in the bottom left hand corner.

When I start the game I get the small window now asking me for further improvements and various links to modding etc etc.

I assume that is the intention? No version stated in the game?

Ignore this post.

In the options screen it says ver. 1.02

Reinstalling and applying only the 1.2 patch worked for me (i had the same problem)

I still haven't reinstalled in hopes someone might find a solution that saves me from doing so :p

I have modded quite a few files but I just reverted them all just now and applied the patch over my semi 1.02 patched game (i.e. 1.02 exe, launcher, launcher configs) to no avail :(

I'm prepared to be corrected, but it sounds as if people only have problems if they've altered their game files in some way. However slightly.

Is it fair that the patch should be able to cope with mods? What, all of them?

Yeah I noticed already with the leaked patch that the patching is very picky about changed gamefiles insofar as it fails completely to do any patching except for replacing files that are completely included in the patch (like the exe).
It doesn't throw an error message unfortunately, and I dispatched this message to CA, but apparently they didn't deem it worthy to include one :inquisitive:
They could have included the map files completely at least as they are pretty likely to be chaged by a lot of people. The 10 or 20MB more wouldn't be that much anyways.

Anyways, if you only changed one slight thing in a file it wants to patch the installer will crap out and you'll have to completely reinstall.

Yep, I'm afraid that's what I'm seeing too ~:(

-_-......

Maybe sapi would like to put alpaca's message as a sticky in the citadel/apothecary so people will know?

Its still funny though that after I changed everything back (besides my cfg and the tools folder where the unpacker is) that it still refused to patch. Maybe it even looks at the last modified date of files? ...

And I really need to say: CA I'm very disappointed in how your patcher handles things especially after saying this game will be great for modders.

alpaca
05-05-2007, 22:43
Well if you replace it with the original files (same checksum) it should be fine.
Only changing the date shouldn't matter, but stuff like removing a space or so does, so it's virtually impossible to reconstruct the original files.
The only way to go is reinstalling, I went through this today, too.

Silly question but did you unpack your files? Cos I don't think the patch patches those then whwn it reads it has 2 versions to deal with

I've simply uninstalled the game after encountering this error and probably won't reinstall it for a while as I'm disappointed with CA. Plus, it saves a lot of space on the hd:yes:
