View Full Version : Quake 4, surprisingly excellent.
Bought this second hand for 15 euro for the 360, boy was that a smart move. I am sure I was not the only one being dissapointed with Doom 3, so I wasn't expecting much from this one. It got bad reviews because of performance issues, and I have to admit, it never really plays smooth, as if the console has a hard time waking up. So I was ready to play yet another mediocre game to kill some time. First reaction 'hey but this doesn't suck', followed by 'hey this is actually pretty good', and now it's more like 'the greatest shooter I have played in a long long time'. The weapons are great, cool enviroments, terrific combat. What it does especially well is the 'decent into the heart of darkness' feeling, each level is more horrific and unnerving. No BOOO got ya scares but a prolonged feeling of dread, great stuff. If you like shooters get it.

If I had to recommend someone to a FPS game, it wouldn't be FEAR. It would be Quake 4. FEAR felt bland and tried too hard to scare us (with little success), but Quake 4 pays more attention to gameplay and fun and less on having a monster PC just to play it. I loved Quake 2, so it's only natural that I love the "true sequel" to it.
Don't particularly like it, from what I've played (just another shooter - story hasn't grabbed me) but it did seem to have potential...
Quake 4 is not bad and can be quite enjoyable, but let's look at the facts: it's another typical shooter once again. Lots of gore, etc., meh.
The bit where you get "Stroggified" had me cringing and squirming in my seat, it was PAINFUL to watch. Overall I really enjoyed the game, even though it is technically 'just another shooter'. Sadly enough, it was probably my personal GOTY for 06, because M2TW and Oblivion didn't nearly measure up to what I thought/wanted them to be.
