View Full Version : Observation - Random thing
Might be out of place, but am I the only one who thinks the MTW2 assassin and spy videos are adorable?
Especially the 'spy-as-walking-bush' and 'inept-assassin-gets-hit-by-door' ones always make me snicker... :laugh4:
No, I'm sure you are not the only one.
I love those videos as well, they are hilarious. I must have watched them hundreds of times.
If you download a Bink video player, you can watch them all in the /data/fmv/ folder.
I believe you can download it from here: http://www.radgametools.com/?from=binkplay&ver=1.8s
My favourite is still the Giesha hiding in the wallpaper video from STW.

Actually, I'm really stupid for I've disable these movies. But I want them back! Who knows how? I couldn't find anything. :help:

Those movies crack me up too. I really like the one wher my assassin shoots the pope from the rafters in the vatican. Or when he misses and it sticks in the pope's hat.

Go into your preferences file in the root folder and change the 0 to a 1 next to the Play Movie line. Those aren't the exact words, but should get you going in the right direction.

Thanks TeutonicKnight. Should work now.
I always snicker when assassins are hit by the door and foiled. My favorite is probably the one where the assassin pushes the cart of straw against the building and sets it alight. And you have to love the convoluted snake plot assassinations...
My favorite STW assassination is the ninja-assassinates-geisha movie where the ninja throws a kusari-gama to kill the geisha. That and the original poison thread assassination, classic.

S:TW movies were awesome. I miss them.
I feel the M2:TW vids are really suspenseful. Even if you've watched them many times you will still feel a bit of suspense each time (unless you figured out where to look!).
Dont' really like the M2TW ones - they're the exact same video each time, with a different background... (that is, for the 'guards chasing' varient of the spy/assassain)

Some of the STW ones were corny though. I know I hated a pair of them with a passion : the one with a ninja entering a field camp with a kind of switchblade doubleyari, and the one with the porta-lantern. Oh, and the clockwork spearlaunching cart was a bit over the top too.
But the rest were superb. I still fondly remember the one with the geisha quietly playing biwa (or was it a samisen ?) while her targets were playing go, then fade out, screams, and aftermath : one guy clubbed to death, the other hanged with a lute string :laugh4:

I know I have read somewhere about ninja using a type of cane-blade where the blade is concealed in a hollow half of the cane. But I do not know how possible the double-bladed pole thingy the ninja uses is. Either way he threw the pole with deadly accuracy in the movie.
I agree that the lantern one was a bit too 'ultimate ninja'. Especially how the ninja somehow manages to impale a samurai on a yari with little to no effort at all. Though the arrow cart was completely feasible. It is simply a bow system in a cart rigged up to shoot through the hollow cart handles on the end.

It was most definitely a samisen if memory serves. :book: Even though like the ninja-lantern movie, it was very entertaining, this was also one of the more 'improbable' movies. How the geisha managed that sort of destruction in such a short time is astounding. :smash:

Cane-sabres, known as shikomizue, were most definitely a common thing used by samurai and peasants alike (during Meiji at least, but I'm pretty sure they weren't unknown before the sword ban), but they certainly weren't switchblades :laugh4:. The most famous of those naturally being Zatoichi's weapon.
The lantern... well, to me it was just ridiculous. Not only the mere idea of it, but I mean come on, like a guard working there 24/7 wouldn't notice an extra garden fixture on his usual beat ?
And yeah, I know the cart thing would have been feasible, but I find it a bit... well, unlikely. Why use such an elaborate device when a simple thrown knife (or an uncouth wild lunge to the face :beam:) would have been just as, if not more practical ? I'm convinced it was meant to be a reference/nod to the Lone Wolf & Cub (Baby Cart) line of movies, which is why it irked me somewhat.
I would have loved at least one ninja movie to make use of the infamous smokebombs, or even the egg "grenades" (a hollowed eggshell filled with oil, pepper and other irritating stuff meant to be thrown in someone's face to blind him) though. They're such a staple of ninja myth, who cares if they're 100%ahistorical ?
I have to say that by comparison with the medieval assassin trying to coax a snake under the bed clothes of a sleeping victim such devices as shooting carts seem almost sensible.
The one thing that put me off watching the MTW2 movies was their sheer level of stupidity and lack of variety. The STW movies might have been implausible, but they depicted a degree of skill on the part of the assassin or geisha. The medieval assassin just comes across as an idiot.

I loved that video. Plunk, plunk, plinky-plunk - thump, bang, splat argh!!! :gring: She didn't so much as smudge her make up.
I liked the ninja one where he sat in the rafters and dribbled poison down a string into the vitcim's snoring mouth. Inventive.
I still like the one with geisha hiding in the wallpaper best. I remember the first time I saw it, it completely took me by surprise, and it was not until the next showing that I knew where to look to spot her before she struck down my Ninja.
The poison down the thread trick was used on an 007 movie, but always reminds me of STW now.
