View Full Version : Query - Effects of Pope / Imam traits?
A number of Priest and Imam traits give bonuses or penalties to things that don't have any clear effect on the game. For instance:
Unorthodoxy
Violence
Peaceful
Purity
What effects do these have on the game and more importantly do any of these make it more or less likely that a Crusade or Jihad will be called?
Anyone?

Unorthodoxy makes you more likely to turn heretic when trying to convert one
Violence affects how nasty you are as pope (may affect spawning of inquiistors, I can't remember)
Peaceful - opposite to above
Purity - opposite to number 1, I think.
Re Crusade/Jihad: Piety 5 is all that's required for Jihad.
Standing with Pope is only relevance to crusade.
Also the more of each given stat can trigger name titles for your priests/imams also. Example: Fritz Fritziwitz has +5 purity from given traits/retinue, one turn later you check said priest, said priest's new title is "Fritz the Pure".

Unorthodoxy: The more unorthodox you are, the more likely the priest goes heretic both trying to denounce a heretic AND standing around in a region (including a 100% own religion region)
Violence affects with how many additional piety points from traits new inquisitors spawn with. Note it does not work on exisiting inquisitors (although you could code that)
Purity does the same as violence, just the opposite. The more pure the pope, the less piety inquisitors start out with.
Ok, thanks. So none of these affect likelihood of Crusade or Jihad being called. Pity.

Are you sure? Does Peacefulness not work better as an opposite to violence? I don't understand why a Pure pope would have peacenik inquisitors...
Oh well...

Actually, I'm not so sure about that. I am currently playing a Papal States campaign (I just popped PS into the playable part of campaign_strat), and Sicily decided to attack me, getting them excommunicated. I then decided to call a crusade on Palermo, but the Pope rejected me. But I AM the friggin' Pope!
Anyway, the Papal States doesn't have relations with itself, and I have successfulyl called crusades on places like Jerusalem and Antioch. So, it seems like there is something else below the surface that affects whether a Pope will call a crusade or not.
But, that's just speculation.

Pah! Evidence!
Whoever heard of paying attention to cold, hard evidence...?

Ermmm.. I was lead to believe early on that these traits were unimplemented extra attributes that got axed at some point when CA was locking in features. I.E. your priest would have 4 attributes like your named characters have four, piety, command, dread/chiv, and loyalty. Priests would have had piety, un/orthodoxy, purity, etc... Could be wrong here though, looks like.

It's not that they're peaceniks per se, only that they won't resort to any mean however unethical just to torch their targets (ie. really give them a fair and honest trial, keep an open mind, that sort of thing).
On the other hand, an inqui spawned by an impure pope wouldn't hesitate to torture and coerce, forge evidence, use false witnesses and bogus confessions or use logical and theological traps (such as the infamous one used on Joan of Arc : "Do you believe you are in God's grace ?". It was a good trick, because had she answered "No", then she'd implicitly admit she was no saint and the voices she heard did not come from Heaven, yet had she answered yes, then she would be guilty of heresy, because Church dogma says that no one can ever be sure to be in God's grace. She very cunningly replied "If I am not, may God put me there; and if I am, may God so keep me" :2thumbsup: ) etc...
