View Full Version : Mountain Battlefield

I've been discussing the vertical to ground scale ratio on another thread about the tendency for MTW battlefield to look too bumpy. But, I just fought a battle on what to me looked like a real mountain and thought I'd post some pictures.
https://img295.imageshack.us/img295/5264/mb1wq5.jpg (https://imageshack.us)
The battle took place on the northern coast of the Iberian Peninsula when the English Army which had just been landed tried to avoid my Moorish counter-attack by retreating into the little alcove you can see between the mountain and the sea.

This left the English crammed into a narrow section of coastline with the sea to their rear and mountains to their front and the only way out a narrow goat path up the mountain or round its base. The tiny dots you might be able to see right on top of the mountain are my Camel Gunners. Amazingly because of the height they could actually hit the English troops clustered on the beach.

The view from the top of the mountain showing my Camel Gunners taking pot-shots into the massed Englishmen below.

A tourist shot showing the goat track carpeted with English dead after the battle.

The Victory Screen says it all.

PS: I forgot to mention that because the English had the sea to there backs (notice NO ships visible therefore no escape by sea) and impassible mountains to the East. Their only escape route was up and through my army so even when they routed they just kept climbing up into my guns. In fact the casualties I sufferred were mostly friendly fire inflicted when routing Englishmen were trying to force their way through my Christian Battle Line. The 3 men that survived were lucky in that they opted for the alternative goat track round the base of the mountain and managed to slip passed when my gunners were distracted by their mates.

something has gone terribly wrong with your video card dude!

Wow, i never knew M2TW had a CGA graphics mode.

Sorry! its not my graphic's card its the process I used to capture the images. I knew I wanted to post some images from the battle and rather than have PSP running in the background I decided to store them temporarily in a word document until I'd finished playing. The result is the consequence of copying an image from a Word Picture File into PSP and then reformating into a .JPEG saving it and uploading onto Imageshack.

If I do it again I'll stick to PSP as the primary storage medium.

If I wasn't wrong this problem should've been fixed with 1.2 patch...at least there's less of these "impassable" terrain.

Whats FRAPS?

What problem?

It wasn't a problem for me, I wiped the floor with them. This battlefield was rare enough for me to consider it a novelty, I've not had any problems with impassible terrain where it doesn't make sense. I mean in the example shown I would have been really 'pissed off' if the English Army had suddenly learn't to walk on water and retreated out to sea, or suddenly produced a Sherpa guide and trekked off over the mountain when I had the only pass blocked.

The worst remaining post 1.02 issues I've noticed are the continuing problems with deployment of troops in settlements. For example I've discovered that the only way to deploy infantry in some locations is to place them sideways and then remember to go back and change their facing once the battle starts. Cavalry in settlements are even harder to place and manouvre, they seem unwilling to go where you want them too and if you try and make them they just dwaudle along dragging their hooves despite the fact that you ordered them to hurry.

I had a pretty amazing battle against the French in a pass in the Pyrenees. It was beautiful, but I elected to fight at night :wall: . I won because the stupid AI didn’t know how to fight, it kept running up and down the 60 degree slope and left itself vulnerable to my Jinettes. After I pruned off most of their missile troops and loosed my javelins, they beat a quick retreat right in front of my army. I still think I should have gotten a heroic victory out of the deal.

You know that you can just hit print screen in the game, it will save all screens to the /tgas folder.
After you've finished with the battle you exit the game, launch PSP, and then you can batch convert them to jpeg etc.
This might be easier for you. Sorry for double post missed this earlier.

You know...I think I did know that. But had forgotten I knew it. Either that or I knew it for another game and hadn't thought to check if MTW2 worked the same way. Until recently I haven't been taking screen shots of MTW2 as I was not sure how to post them on this forum, so I suspect it is World of Warcraft that does something similar.

Anyway thanks for the tip, no doubt if I look in that folder now I have a huge stack of past screen shots that I thought I'd lost. Actually, thats a good point it should mean I still have some of the screenshots I thought I'd lost. Woohoo! :2thumbsup:

That's great so now you have more screens to show us !!!

Didz, these are my screens from before I fried my GFX card. I play very slow as well, although I play all cavalry, mostly. This is 1346 and I'm playing 2 turns per year so I've already done like 200 turns or more. I'm posting them because I thought it might help to dispel the myth that all cavalry guys are blitzers.

It's pointing to Timbuktu because someone asked where it was (again).

My best cavalry army at that time *I was a newb in M2 the General does'nt even have full gold chevrons*.
The Sword of ARSLAN commanded by a certain *ahem* Mr. "Hajji" who incidentally had never been to Mecca.

Borat is just weird no matter where he goes, and the company he keeps (well to each his own).

The historic image that started the whole "Sinan exploit" "merchant fort exploit" hoopala, in the story of the TW series.
Note the fort placement. Those armies raided as far as Bern.

HMM... I think I posted this in the wrong thread.

EDIT: Yeap. Actually I intended to post this in this (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=85070) thread because I saw your empire screenshots there and I thought "That looks like one of my campaigns."

IMO, the terrain bonuses in this game are far to great. With a couple of missile units + an infantry unit or two, you can beat a full stacks easily if you are on the top of a mountain. Double that, and you're basically invincible.

And that's assuming the enemy is actually able to reach you.

I might have an interesting screenshot. I recently had a battle where I could not reach the enemy at all, and even if I could I would have been creamed. The enemy army was CAMPERED way up there on HimalayanPEAK Hotel.

How is that different from the first itteration of this game?

Sure, but an attacking general (AI or not) should take one look at the massive height advantage and bugger off for a cup of tea. And not order a suicidal assault, which is what generally happens.

I like that...Some battles have been won well against the odds because of terrain (and better tactics/stupid enemy).

Your point that the AI general should know better is fair enough though - although the English didn't at Bannockburn. Edward 11 must have been CA AI :laugh4:

(as opposed to Edward 1 who was a rather different matter...I firmly believe Robert the Bruce would have had his ass handed to him on a plate if Big Ted had still been around, and I'm a Scot!)
