Revised Mileage for Hybrids

I always was suspicious of hybrid vehicles. Even assuming they achieved their posted mileage (which they don't), those two-hundred-pound battery packs left me wondering, despite corporate claims (http://www.hybridcars.com/environment-stories/hybrid-battery-toxicity.html) that every bit of the battery is recycled.

Anyway, I guess the revised MPG estimates are about to roll out, and hybrids take it on the chin. Judging from my real-world observations, the lemur sedan is roughly equivalent to a Camry.

Heck, my Cavalier still gets 35mpg on the highway. I've never been impressed by or interested in the current generation of hybrids- they certainly don't justify their increased costs.

If I was looking for a fuel efficient car, I'd go diesel. It's a proven technology, diesel engines are reliable and give plenty of power. Maybe a Jetta or something. :2thumbsup:

On a similar subject, does anyone else get irritated when you stop to fill up your car and see that the station is using an ethanol blend? I haven't been miffed enough to drive away yet, but I hate paying the same money for something that will give me worse mileage. :no:

In fact, due to the... erm... interesting production process of the Prius's battery cell (the nickel used in it, IIRC, comes from a plant around which everything is dead in a radius of twenty miles), and the fact that the Hummer has a far longer mileage (spreading the cost of its manufacturing over a longer distance and more time), driving a Hummer is actually better for the environment than driving one of these hippy "green" cars. :smash:

Nope, because we've been using it for years and never had any cause to complain before now. E10 has been common for over two decades; the only difference is that now they're putting signs on the pumps.

Have any of you been paying attention here. It seems rather obvious to me that the method of testing has been changed as no car met the current ratting.

The Camry Hybrid gets an avg of 10mpg better than its regualr counterpart and the Honda Civic Hybrid gets an avg of 13mpg better.

Drive Deisel. I do and my big arse truck gets pretty competive with MPG not to mention its about 10 cents less a gallon

Diesel is more expensive than unleaded in the UK - go figure :dizzy2:

Still you do get more mpg out of it.

[About the 10% bio-ethanol fuels, I don't know how it affects the mileage, but in general you will get a performance boost out of it. Bio fuel gives a small boost to engine power for most cars over standard unleaded. How good it is for your engine in the long-term is debatable however . . ]

OF COURSE YOU GET MORE MPG from diesel than petrol -- it's denser :idea2: IE a gallon of diesel is more fuel than a gallon of petrol. Try comparing weight for weight, then see what the figures look like....

Yay! I finally found something to agree with Xiahou over :2thumbsup: My vehicle is a diesel Golf (not too disimilar to the Jetta), nearly 90k miles on the clock and still running smooth as a baby's behind. It doesn't really do acceleration, but once it's up there it eats the miles. Plenty of power for towing as well. It's so clunky and mechanical even I can do the odd bits of work it needs - I'd hate a car that depends on a computer to even start up in the morning :beam:

I'm not too sure on the exact mpg figures I get from it though, and for all diesel is more expensive than unleaded, I still count 40% of my travel allowance as pure profit :2thumbsup:

Yup, the Assassin family are looking for a new car , due to the pending arrival of the third little assassin, and diesel is certainly the greenest choice right now.

New diesels are pretty perky these days too, which is gravy:yes:
