View Full Version : Inquisitors before and after patch
Hello all......
As we all know the Inquisitors before 1.2 were the bane of everyone. They killed at will pretty much. And much like the Geshia in STW, very hard to kill themselves. 9 times out of 10 an Assassin had no chance. And I tried to do the Inquisitor "stomp", but it just dosent seem to work for me, they always manage to squirm away somehow.
Hell....I had to put a campaign on hold once because Inquisitors were whacking a spy or two evey turn. Now, if a trained town watch, not to mention ememy spys, couldn't "see" my lvl 9 spy....how on God's green Earth is an un-trained "Holy"man?
Having recently patched the game to 1.02 I have not had the....good fortune.....of having an Inquisitor in my lands yet. So here is an observation and a question.
Observation:
I have noticed that many of my Generals, and not just my family members, have very high piety. Now I know this was patched in because before the patch you were lucky to have a General with one piety, much less 3 or more.
Now, I get 3 to 6 piety Generals all the time, in multiple ongoing games.
Now I dont know if they did this as a balance, a quick fix, to protect the Generals from Inquisitors, or what. But I have to say that it is an improvement. The great majority of people at the time were in fact, quite pious. Including the Royalty for the most part...at least in public. So bravo CA! :laugh4:
Question(s):
In 1.0 did you ever have Inquisitors target, not Family Members and Generals, but your spys, assassins and diplomats?
And have you noticed either a drop in sudden deaths by Inquisition or a greater chance to escape being branded a heritc?
Any other changes you have noticed fron Inquisitors?

Unless their behavior changes when you can actually control them, I've noticed playing as the Papal states in 1.2 that when they do pop up then spend most of their time traveling, plus three out of five times from what I've seen they fail at denouncing someone.
I generally let them roam the land on their own and not interfere unless I need to put pressure on someone, otherwise these are my observations in 100+ turns into my campaign.

I've noticed that Inquisitors seem much less active in 1.2. In 100+ turns I think I've only seen them get frisky with me a couple of times, and I'm not even best buddies with the Pope (which seemed to make a difference in older versions). I'd say they have been toned down considerably, not a bad thing either.
They still strike hard when they go for you, but they are not the infestation they used to be. :balloon2: Hooray for the pragmatists (the Pope needs ignoring at times) over the zealots. :balloon2:
EDIT: Mailman. Playing as the Papal States do you have any immunity from / control over the Inquisitors? I'm guessing not, but just thought I'd ask.
I have not had a problem with inquisitors in either or the 1.2 patches. I suppose that is because I appease the pope and/or the pope is usually always hailing from my lands. It also helps if you keep your all of your family members in the light and not walking as bastions of blasphemy.

I've had two heretics show up in my 1.2 game, and while I was bringing my high-level cardinal over from the next continent to denounce them (my assassins weren't up to the job), inquisitors appeared. They hung around the heretic for several turns, neither moving nor seeming concerned with the other's presence. Finally, the heretic moved on, and then the inquisitor left a few turns after that (but not pursuing the heretic). Maybe the inquisitor was on holiday?

Yes I have immunity and control over them if I wish, ordinarly I have a hands off aproach to them, but in the past I've used them to take out enemy generals. Just like assasins, sometimes they get their man, othertimes they don't.
I've noticed that 1) Inquisitors appear less frequent (as in not as many roaming at once) and 2) succeed in killing less often in patch 1.2 and patch 1.1. I think there's a good balance now as wheras before it was unbalanced.
:2cents:
Hey thanks for the posts guys. It sounds like the Inquisitors are a bit more under control.

A inquisitor killed my cardinal. Damn I thought they were immune to trials. Anyway, any character save for dips and mercs can be roasted. I had a lvl 10 spy who kept being harassed by an inq. The idiot stab for x number of turns and my spy finaly died of old age.

My observation shows that there are only 3 changes
1. Inquisitors appear much less and are less active
2. Generals have much more piety.
3. Units on the crusade are immunized.
But inquisitors are still almost immortal for assasins (even high experianced). Or this is bad balance of assasins?

Well, I can only say, being on perfect relations with the Pope, two inquisitors roamed my Italian provinces and burned no less than three priests (WTF?!?) and one family member (had low overall stats, including piety, and was a madman to boot; I had planned to suicide him first chance, so no big loss). This in 1.2.

Post 1.2 i'm finding it extremely easy to assassinate them. Doesnt make the pope too happy though. What a shame.

I have also assasinated an iquisitor in 1.2 with only couple of tries.:skull:
And I have lost only one diplomat near Rome because of them.
I havent tried assassinating a inquisitor yet. Havent needed to. So far they arent the problem they used to be.

Im at around turn 110 with the French.
Prince Michael was campaigning near Nuremburg when he was tried by an inquizitor, he failed the test and was hung.
His father was distraught after hearing of his sons demise as for all his sons inability to quote from the good book Prince Michael could figure the number of the opposition, gauge the height of the walls and realise that no matter the total it would take more than that to defeat the French.
His father the King had been excommunicated soon after taking the throne, a misunderstanding over the legitimacy of certain formerly Scilian territories. The Pope being Scilian (the previous French Pope having lasted not a season) was baised and tensions were running high.
So the King decided to head to Rome to petition the Pope with a full stack of Knghts of clear purpose and several canons. Before he arrived he sent 2 crossbow militia to announce his impending arrival. As the militia camped in the mountains the Pope sent his swiss guard to greet them. Slowly the swiss guards struggled up into the mountains and being charitable types the militia attached the words of the King to their bolts and fired them down apon the guards, thinking to save the swiss the trouble of climbing so high.
Thrice the swiss climbed to that high place and they must have been lazy curs because none returned to the Pope bearing the words of the King. When at last the King arrived he found Rome empty except for the Pope himself. Nevertheless, the King and his knights petitioned the Pope with words as bright as steel.
The Pope realised the error of his ways and departed at once for heaven to beseech the Lord Almighty for the soul of young Prince Michael.
So it was that the noble French with words as bright as steel convinced the temporal representative of the Good Lord Above that sending an inquizitor with his tricksy questions and puzzling tests was a mistake most grevious.
Great read. Thanks SadCat :book:
I aim to please :laugh4:
