Rest in Peace, Mr. Falwell.

May he rest in peace.
In the last half century he has preached to many people, seeking to bring them closer to salvation, as well as having offended others with precisely the same messages.
Falwell is now before the "Only Opinion" who Falwell himself believed really mattered.
Well, he supported a lot of positions I disagree with, but done is done. Rest in peace, Mr. Falwell.

Falwell is now before the "Only Opinion" who Falwell himself believed really mattered.
Falwell told the story of Hezekiah, who in the Bible asked to live for 15 more years.
"I'm praying the same prayer with an option to renew," Falwell said.
Looks like he's somewhere other than the christian heaven... Hindu, perhaps?

I've always believed the Falwell vs LArry flint debacle was similar to the Andy Kaufman vs Lawler fued, a totally staged act between two opposites looking to gain notoriety amongst their peers.
Falwell, and his bogus suit against Flint for a satirical piece in a porn magazine, helped shape the US legal standard for libel/slander and as such he deserves a permanant place in 1st amendment textbooks forever and ever. Rest in peace u crazy bastard.

As I understand it, the Prez named today Jerry Falwell (appreciation) day of national mourning and the WH flag is at half-mast. No doubt all of America feels at great loss to see such a huge (350 pounds) figure removed from our presence. Better (wo)men have passed without a word of respect from this WH - this guy deserved no special acknowledgement, except that he helped Bush get elected.

Meh, I don't care enough to really say anything else on this subject, but I will say this much. My opinion posted earlier was an extremely politically corrected manner of stating my true thoughts.
As for the respect, someone who didn't earn it while they were living doesn't mean they suddenly get it from me when they kick the bucket.

Nobody forces anybody to make flattering statements here. We just "appreciate" the more critical reviews or statements about the lives of recently deceased are at least kept back for a while.
If anybody would like to further discuss this policy (and I am aware that we allowed "exceptions" to that rule in the past), please move such a discussion to the appropriate place (i.e. PM or the Watchtower Backroom)
Thanks

As a culture of life we respect the passing of individuals, even those who take life, well those of us who choose to exhibit decorum greater than the our disdain or malice.

Are you aware of the concept of "showing a little class?"
I could be wrong, but it does not appear to me that you do.
Shakespeare suggested that the evil men do lives after them while the good is often interred with their bones -- could you not have waited at least that long? :shame:

You dont agree with a mans politics and you post in a thread that is paying respects? Why didnt you just stay out? Did ou really think we couldnt go without such gems as

I didn't see anywhere in the thread topic or Dave's post about "paying respects". And you can keep that idiotic self-righteous attitude to yourself in the future kiddo, and don't tell people how or when to post.

The funeral has happened. Thread re-opened.
Apparently the Org staff's caution was well-advised. What kind of nut tries to protect a funeral with a bomb (http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=3201543)?

hah, what do you think the chances of that christian nut-job being charged as a terrorist are? Patriot Act should apply, doubt it will. Just like the nuts who were building bombs to attack Hispanics in Tennessee should have been charged as terrorists and weren't.

But his comments in the days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks made it nearly impossible for mainstream politicians to associate with him.
No national Republicans attended Tuesday's funeral, including none of the GOP presidential candidates. All said they were too busy.

Let's do the man some justice, and quote him correctly (https://home.comcast.net/~joe.grabko/falwell.mp3):
"The abortionists have got to bear some burden for [the attacks of Sept. 11] because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say, 'You helped this happen.'"

And now I can make the statement that Fallwell died because God was mad at him for being an arrogant :daisy:, and smote him dead for it.

Put these in Jerry still dead thread - which was closed, even though I complied with the moderators request not to post on Jerry 'til he was put in his tomb - buried as it were.
Personally, I had no problem with his initial attempts (after supporting Reagan) to put a morning prayer back in schools (Reagan had him to dinner, but pretty much ignored the prayer dealy). But, at the same time I wish they'ld take that "one nation under god" out of our pledge - put in "under democracy" or such. Make it a pledge, not a prayer.
Anyway:

How about just going back to the original?
'I pledge allegiance to my Flag and (to*) the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.'
Heres the latest secular version
'I pledge allegiance to my Flag, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with equality, liberty and justice for all.'

Aside from that one rather misguided fellow with a bomb. Has there been mass rioting over the treatment of a supposed "icon" of those christians on the right side of politics? Have we burned any in effigy lately? I have yet to see Kafir's name taken in as the object of a holy war. As editorialized fundamentalists we have some work to do to keep up with the persona.

I'm waiting for a gay scandal to come out. It has to be. It's like, God's First Commandment Before The Ten Commandments that a populist-televangelist has to possess a secret gay lover.
Falwell's comments are largely correct. As God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah with fire and brimstone, it is likely at some point God shall also take action on any other nation that is likewise guilty of the same grievances as they were, which America and "modern society" most certainly is.
However, I still do not respect Falwell because from time to time he would waffle on his convictions like the ones we are discussing here.
I also do not respect Falwell because I believe he scammed the elderly & mentally impaired by soliciting money from them that he did not need. I remember once I saw him on TV asking for individuals to send him $10 000 because according to him that would make them "Master Builders" just like it says so in the Bible.:idea2:

Nav my main problem with the Rev Falwell and people like yourself is you seem to take the old testament to heart more than the new. What happened to Jesus's message with you guys of love and forgiveness? Dont you think going to hell is enough punishment? If god Punishes the wicked why are there still so many of them?

Some one talked about a homosexual scandal, they obviously didn't look at the links I posted - it's there. The bomb threat thing at Jerry's funeral was about the guy (that had the homemade bombs in his trunk) being from a church (same guys that try to harass military funerals) in KS that believed Jerry was to protective of gays. How they ever came to that conclusion? Only god knows.
A mosesmore humble posting is:

(not serious btw, its a joke in other words)
btw - The Prez sent a mid-level aide (Tim Goeglein) to represent him, guess Cheney was fishing or hunting.
I guess he'll finally get to find out if God just reads Hustler for the article's.
Good riddance. The world is more peaceful without another person screaming about the gay question.
guess Cheney was fishing or hunting.
