View Full Version : Best general?
Who was the best general of the MTW period? Given the taste of a few dojo members, here is a few tips:
1) William the Conqueror
2) V. Henry
3) Joan d'Arc
4) Vanya
5) always "me"
6) Subedai
Please, make your arguments in favour of the person you choose!
What's with these choices? William the Conqueror? It didn't seem as if he was really going up against much. Joan d'Arc? Can schizophrenia count as martial prowess?? And it had always seemed as if she was more of an inspirational figurehead, anyway.
Of course I don't really know too much about any of this, so feel free to educate me. Still, though.

Although I hate him Saladin or even before him Nur-ab-Din were great generals of their time.
Richard 1st of England was a very capable General as was Subadei obviously, but it is hard to comment because all of the generals mentioned above had completely different fighting styles because of the terrain they lived in, and the types of men they had at their disposal.

without a single doubt, Subudei.
67 major battles without a loss, fought in different terrain, countries and against different nations.....
Hail Sub
Hail Sub
Subudei is great. He is one of my favorite general in Genghis Khan 2 (beside Muqali and Jebe). He is one, and may be the top one, of the five best generals under Genghis Khan. Muqali is also one of the five but not Jebe.
Edit: also all the ones who beat me online are great generals too. At least better than me.

with no doubt Subotai ; and close followed by Cheetah http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
The always "me" option refers to the reader! But thx Vlad! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
BTW, it seems that Subudei (is this the correct spelling?) have gained a substantial lead.

Nice try James but a bit out of time. Arthur was dead by now even if he existed.
It was thought that he would have been a Celtic Prince who lived in Cornwall and fought the Saxon invaders when the Romans left.

Back on topic, Alexius Comnenus I was the Byzantine Emperor at the time the game begins, and he was a pretty good general. He fended off the Normans in the West, and the Seljuk Turks in the East, recovering at least part of Asia Minor for the Empire from the Turks.
His son (John II) and grandson (Manual I) were also both good generals. John and Manual extended Byzantine power back into Cilicia and Syria, which had all been lost for 100 years. All three had very long reigns, Alexius, 37 years, John, 25 years, and Manual, 37 years. You didn't last that long as emperor unless you were a decent general. All three were fighting emperors and spent most of their reigns in the field.
It's all too bad that the next 5 emperors were universally pathetic and sorry http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

From the list, Subedei without a doubt. In my opinion he was the greatest full stop. Jebe was also a formidable general, taken prematurely, who knows what glorious victories might have lay ahead? Imagine the invasion of Russia and Europe with both Subedei and Jebe calling the shots!!

I think the best one must have been the unknown guy who lead the swiss mob from "Appenzell" to rob everything they could find in the world. They were only peasants but still got to Basel and beyond. They invaded Burgundy, well there they were finally beaten. But they were able to pillage 500 km through central Europe and no one could stop them. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
