Lets get it right this time in shogun and mi if you charged a yari samurai unit in the rear with cavalry your cavalry would still lose as long as the spears werent engaged at the front, Considering the length of the spears or pikes http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif it would take an age to make them effective to a rear charge by cavalry, I hope they get it right this time as they said rear charges cav v pike worked in shogun and it dident.

Marching yari troops carry spear over shoulders... and as such, they inherently point backwards. So, charging from behind marching yari is like charging straight into a porcupine -- bad idea. The only way to hit marching yari is from the front or side, as this way, the pointy sticks are not facing you.
Swoosh,
Rear charging of spears by cav is much more effective now WE/MI v1.02. You have an excellent chance of routing an unengaged spear unit instantly with a well executed rear charge. This is because the charge bonus on cav is much higher now.

Just make sure that they dont rout straight through your "Well executed rear charge"!

Just remember a single spearman can only point in one direction.
A unit of spearmen can form a square. This should be another formation available! Just immobile

I agree with Papa-- you cant tell me that a unit of YS would be totally oblivious to the thunder of hooves directly behind them. Any of the YS that were not engaged frontally would have time to turn and plant their spears against the charge, and by God, in real battle they would do it.
If they were caught by suprise from the rear, that would be different (even though they carry spears on shoulder, they are not poised to strike and would be knocked off the shoulder by a good Yari-Cav spear in the back). Also would be different if all men were engaged in h2h at the time of the charge.
Which reminds me of a thread i need to start:
What totally unrealistic behaviour have your witnessed on the battlefield?
will go start that now
