View Full Version : Marriage alliances

Traditionally in Medieval Europe alliances were cemented by marriages- (Henry VIII was a fickle ally of course while his daughter Elizabeth I actually proposed herself as the 'husband' of a 13 year old for one such alliance). So instead of shifty-eyed emissaries, in MTW we should hopefully be conducting negotiations at the altar! So, the Byzantines will offer the magnificent St Sophia, the Italians have St Peters, and the Mongols....will have a tent. Will you choose the 70 year old 5 times divorced Teutonic dowager with her dowry of Knights, Joan of Arc with her fantical garlic munchers, or the 7 year old Mameluk princess who brings nothing but her childhood toys- invincible clockwork soldiers! The choice is yours.

Well if you can finish the campaign like Expert in Shogun in twenty years then you could choose the 7 year old. As by the time your King gets back from campaign to actually see the wife she will be a charming 27 year old... of course your King may be more inclined like Alexander the Great so the 70 year old may be the go and he can keep the Knights as his ahemm 'Companions'... talk about a bodyguard.

I just find it amusing listening to people say that gay men are not capable of being warriors and that they would decrease morale.
Alexander the Great and his Companions
(150 couples selected because they thought that lovers would fight better to protect each other)
Spartans
Janisarrie or some of the Muslim slave armies had a similar reputation of being deadly on the battlefield and well San Fran off it.
Greeks and the Romans as well.
Of course the Greeks called it a 'Spartan' thing and the Romans called it a 'Greek' thing.

Long list of homosexual Japanese warlords too, most particularly Takeda Shingen I think- it used to be encouraged in Greece as improving morale as they'd want to impress their lovers by excelling in combat.

Not you.
It is more of an Australian Returned Servicemen League President thing against homosexuals, and republic, and long hair, and new flag, and anything beyond the 1950's technology.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I REALLY don't believe the Spartans were homos... indeed, I am rather sure that they were against homosexuality and rather it was the Athenians that were famous for it.
As I said, correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I'd always thought.

Sorry Matt but it is true that the Spartans were famed for their want of homosexual men in the army.
Men were trained to fight in pairs and so you protect your pair. The reason being, if he is your lover you are more likely to look out for him.
But then the Spartans had some weird customs. For instance if some old goat couldn't get it up so to speak then it was perfectly normal for him to invite a younger man around to sleep with the old goats wife in the hope of producing a brave spartan warrior.

Anyway it was definately a Spartan thing and not a Greek thing.

No i'm not the Messiah
Only the true Messiah would deny it.
Alright then I am the Messiah.
HE IS THE MESSIAH HOORAY!!!
I picked up a PC Gamer magasine and article about M:TW (rather short, only 2 pages) said that heirs will be males as well as females. Daughters will be used for marrying to improve relationships, spying on their hubbies and making more heirs http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif You will also get some foreign chicks sent your way with approximately same intentions. Mind you they all look ugly.
hope I am not off-topic here in light of where this discussion arrived....
Regards, Ryurik.

Well of course if I'd known when I started a thread on marrying 7 year olds in the quest for supreme power the result would be a digression on Spartan bedside manners..... I'd've started it sooner.

The Spartans had two kings. That way they could have one at war and the other in charge.
But did they have any (female) Queens?
