Hmm, never had a lot of the things you guys are talking about, like Siapao and Yum Cha. We don't get as much diversity here in the middle of nowhere. Pretty much its a lot of sports bars and mexican restaurants.

Hmm, I suppose the best thing I had today was a ground turkey meat burger. Ground turkey is quite excellent, imo. It works especially well on my Foreman grill.

a) Which Yum Cha.

I'll find out and get back to ya, just remember it was in Black Town. Pretty seedy area and finding parking was a consistent ordeal, but the shark fin dim sum was sooo worth it. My other favorite was the rice noodle thing (forget the name). It was a long and flat noodle with two big prawns inside that they'd serve with a dousing of soy sauce that was fantastic.

(Found a pic https://img69.imageshack.us/img69/2936/418cw9.th.jpg (https://img69.imageshack.us/my.php?image=418cw9.jpg))

Looks and tastes exceedingly similar to my familiar Thai cuisine, which I positively hate.

Hating Thai food?! My God, utter blasphemy. To be honest, I didn't like it much as a child, but mainly because I kept ordering curries and the coconut milk based ones sit terribly in my stomach. Have you tried some of the more simple dishes like pad thai or glass noodle salad? Those are the Thai dishes that won me over and now I'm hooked.

Nevertheless, I envy Prollie's menu... can't say I've had the pleasure.

The great thing about siopao is that a drunken alzheimer's patient could make it. If you have any of those Asian groceries around you that are spreading like wild fire in northern Virginia, you can just ask for the steamed sweet buns (like Hosa knows, get the barbqued pork!) and you will get what you're looking for. There you can get a steamer basket* usually for a few dollars, and you just boil a pot of water, put the basket on top, and let the buns steam for 10 minutes or so. The directions say you can microwave them too, but they're prolly not as soft and moist that way.

https://img69.imageshack.us/img69/3442/ist2153389dimsumbamboosvy3.th.jpg (https://img69.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ist2153389dimsumbamboosvy3.jpg)

We don't get as much diversity here in the middle of nowhere. Pretty much its a lot of sports bars and mexican restaurants.

Don't take the Mexican food for granted! While in Australia, I had prolly the best Thai, Chinese, and Indian food I've ever had, but their Mexican food is downright awful. Seems strange that such a simple cuisine could be done wrong, but believe me, you couldn't get a satisfactory enchilada down there for your life.

Possibly the soup I had for lunch - Carrot and Coriander. I had begun to get bored with having it every day for the past few weeks, so I decided to spice it up a little. I added to it, while it was simmering, a moderate amount of garlic powder, a pinch of salt, black pepper, extra coriander powder and a few chives. The best I've ever tasted it. However, on the down side, nobody has dared to come near me all afternoon - what is it with people and the smell of garlic?

Or, well, I'm "Thai" in the way that Americans say they're "Chinese" or "Irish," you know

That does make me a curious creature. The World likes Thai food and yet this one individual finds many of the more "elegant" dishes downright disgusting. I guess I just never really found the abundance of spice to be that enticing. Mind you, my favorite Thai cuisine -- and I do love those which I like -- are simpler ones less overloaded with all the spice and chili and all the flora of Tropical SE Asia. And I hate spicy food :P

******

But since this is an uplifting thread about nice food, I guess I'll have to answer the topic and says that today's fish (fried, eaten with rice), tuna sandwich, and a bowl of homemade spaghetti (all in separate meals) are all quite wonderfully engaging. And, like always, off to eat with me!

(How the heck am I so damn thin with so much love for food? 107 Pounds is unhealthy no matter how anyone put it. -.-)

The best thing I ate today -- actually am doing so right now -- is beer. Yes that's right: beer is "food". I never drink Bavaria, but beer's beer... it not only serves as a drink, but as food, for it would fill a person with-- what... two sandwiches? Therefore -> beer = multipurpose consumption product.

Especially if you buy a little crate of beer, it serves more than just to be consumed. The bottles can be used as light quick weapons close or afar; the crate itself can be used as a heavy (slow) weapon.

But wait(!), there's more. You can even use the beer crate as foot support to rest your tired legs and feet. Or you can use the crate to sit on outside if there's nothing else around. You can even use the bottles to juggle if you feel like it (and are good enough).

How's that for multipurpose use of a crate and bottles, besides the food/drink functions of the beer itself, eh? Brilliant :saint:

A very rich and tasty Surinamese soup that fills you quite well, as it is eaten (at least I assume) as a main meal; not as light pre-main food -- it has it all; rice, chicken meat, potato-like "casava", cooked banana, and more, not forgetting the main soup itself all over it.
I don't know the name's translation to English, but its taste is highly excellent.

Woke up this morning outside my flat still drunk having had a silly amount of alcohol yesterday, and then left without bringing my keys with me. Oops.

Otherwise... Reheated roast pork and mash (the best bit: potato, sweet potato, spring onions and a small amount of apple). Though the chicken and avocado wrap I had for lunch was very nice too, but I didn't make it.

Yuppers, if for no other reason than Milton Berle's famous

"Let our slogan be 'E Pluribus Hot Dog.' "

when honoring Coney Island's fabulous frankfurter (and by extension, america).

I enjoy the hint of garlic aftertaste Nathan's has. Plus they have thicker casings/skins, making them more grill-friendly, therefore less likely to blister/burn when cooked by beer-soaked klutzes like me.

The doctor told me yesterday - no more red meat for you.
So I took the salad bar for lunch today.

Ok, I am going to be specific. I put this in my bowl:
Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, Tuna, Chicken, peanuts, cooked egg, pasta, pineapple, corn, crabsticks and cheese. On top I poured over some white dressing – probably some sour cream based with chives.
With it I had two glasses of water and a rye roll with healthy butter.

Yep I am definitely loosing weight. I am probably going to look like BKS if this continues.

Pasta primavera? Nevermind it's Italian cuisine, bring two bottles of rather old (at least 6-7 years old) Rioja, if you can afford it. Well, three bottles for four people... Bring a fouth one. Trust a Frenchman! Those old spanish wines are just... brewage for the Gods, with that slight taste of cinnamon.

Great, I had a look at the link you gave, and more or less 13 euros a bottle seems a good deal. Just make sure you open the bottles at least two hours before you drink them, in order to let the wine breathe a bit, be less astringent and express all it's flavours.

After-action report: That was a great hit at dinner last night! We sat in the cool southern california dusk, on their sunset-facing patio, snacking on black olives, sipping that first Rioja, discussing medicine, law, old movies, and comedians.

Moving indoors, we enjoyed cucumber and beet salads, then Jenny's pasta primavera, the second bottle of Rioja, and anlayzed all our co-workers.

Retiring back to the patio (they had mercy on me, the lone cigarette smoker), we polished off the third bottle, and solved ALL of life's problems.

A fine evening, and full bellys, were had by all, lubricated by an excellent wine.

Long workday (11 hours; god, how did my Dad do it? He routinely put in 12-14 hour shifts his whole life.), so left-overs, with liguine.

Saturday's Roast chicken, Sunday's roast pork, green beans, snap peas, all cut to half-inch cubes, quick-fried in a super-hot pan with sesame oil for about a minute;

add the already cooked pasta, turn off the heat, cover for 5 minutes, shaking the pan a couple times to mix.

Uncover, drizzle with basalmic vinegar & olive oil.

Not horrible, for leftovers. And quick - about 15 minutes from refrigerator to table.

Beer helps. :)
