I was surfing over at the Gamespy site and read the Medieval Total War review. The last paragraph caught my eye in particular:
As if all this wasn't enough, Medieval will also ship with complete multiplayer capability, complete with GameSpy matchmaking, so you and your buddies can set up free battles against each other.

Actually I've been lurking for all this time.
But really, did you guys know we weren't going to be stuck using some central server for MTW? That's what caught my eye....well other than the fact this game's going to be 10 times more complex than Shogun http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

now I'm wondering if you got a siege canon if you can blast the bridge... certainly would make the battle more interesting.. you'd have to wait a few hundred years for planes to show up :P...yes I know there are boats/quick to build bridges ,but thats no fun.

You could even use a trechbucket (sp) to defend a castle like that... just aim at the bridge and squish.
BTW did they use lots of small stones in the trechbucket like some catapults did on ships in Roman times?

Besides the last part of the interview (as blackship pointed out) that i did not know of, the only new specific thing mentioned clearly is that there will be three religions in the game (and they named them).

QUESTION:
Oh no - am I reading correctly that MTW will NOT have a separate server and that we will all be funneled through Game Spy????
Does Game Spy charge money to play on it ?

GameSpy has no charge to play...but it is beset by adverts .... you can register and pay to get rid of them.
And it's almost full of idiots and cheaters.
Plus you can be almost certain there will be NO ranking system anymore...

Is there any way to segregate a server ... or set up a certain password to Ensure Quality Control?

You can have your server and play games only with your clan mates. I think that u can password protect any server you want.
There should the one main server and several other smaller ones.
Some clans might get up their own server. Nice thing is that there won't be 2000 servers like quake 3 or unreal. There shall be around 10-20 of em so you can keep the community feeling. Gamespy though ain't good.

I would say that most games I have seen that have gamespy as a matchmaking program, also allow for IP games. IF that is so, we can still have a community, we would just create a chat room on the MI/STW server (If it will allow for this) and then launch IP games from there. This was done for Gettysburg on the old MPlayer service and that was a very close-knit community.
Vanya is confused. What is this heresy called "game spy"? I never seen such, heard of such, much less tried it.

What does this whole gamespy thing mean practically? Will it be "harder" to find games? Will you only be able to play folks whose IP you know?!?
