Red Orchestra Summer Assault Starts Now
May 31, 2007, 10:35 am - Eric Twelker
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New maps, increased player limits, 10 free days of play for friends, plus 20% off list price
Tripwire Interactive today released a major update for Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45, the award-winning WWII online action game. For current owners, the updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. Those who purchase the game before June 11 will save an additional 20% off the $19.95 list price.
The update includes:
Ten new maps, all winning entries in Tripwire's Custom Map Competition. Highlights include:
“Smolensk Stalemate”: the contest winning map features perfectly balanced to-and-fro infantry combat through ruined villages and trenches in August 1943.
“Leningrad”: features close-quarters infantry fighting in the ruined streets of the city, above them in the bombed-out buildings and deep beneath them in the sewers, all with close-in armor support.
“Berezina”: the After-Hourz team surpass themselves on this rural/village map, introducing not just a new vehicle (the Russian BT-7 light tank), but also the first functional anti-tank gun in the game. To cap it off, the BT-7 even carries tank-riders.
“Black Day July”: one of the very best for tank combat fans, set in the rolling countryside around Prokhorovka as German and Russian armor clash en masse during the Battle of Kursk.
Increased multiplayer count. A new level of intensity with 50+ player multiplayer battles (up from the previous limit of 32).
New community made content, including the Russian BT-7 light tank with infantry tank riders and the first player controllable anti-tank gun in the game.
New soundtrack: The “Orchestra” comes to the Ostfront - the game now features a complete in-game soundtrack from composer Matthew Burns.
Gameplay enhancements. The addition of several features requested by the clan/ladder/league community to enhance competitive play.
To give gamers a chance to try the updated version of one of the best sellers on Steam, Tripwire is offering both retail and Steam customers two free Steam Guest Passes. All owners of Red Orchestra can invite friends to try the game with no obligation to purchase. Upon receiving and activating the Steam Guest Pass, the invited friend has ten days of Red Orchestra play available for free.
I'm still downloadin, I'll probably be done by tommorow, but I hope all of you all get off BF and get on RO!!

Thats alot of new content. I liked RO but it seems to me Id have to join a clan to get the real team/coop experience, and I'm not one for clans. I've been playing ARMA alot lately which imo, is easier to find a real coop/team play server.
But I still have my copy of RO, maybe I'll go back to it one day =)

Hey, I'd like that. I guess you'll need my e-mail adress? Or how does it work?
RO is a fantastic game.
I played it during one of their free weekends and was just sold.
The graphics may not be the best but in gameplay it has it all.

Tried it out yesterday (thanks Alexander!!!) and it is great fun! Tried the RO based on UT2003 a long time ago and didn't like that so much, but this new version is awesome!
Feels a bit like America's Army set in WWII but much more realistic :laugh4: Was shocked when I reloaded one of the rifles and it took me like 20 seconds! :inquisitive: :laugh4:
And at under $16 on Steam this is a bargain! :2thumbsup:

Forget about your personal life for the next 1-2 weeks. You wont want anything else than RO. Not even porn, not even women, not even beer or whisky, no friends, just shoot the sniper that comes into your scope.

Ah yes, ironsights and fully authentic weaponry. My favourite recipe. :2thumbsup:
Favourite weapon anyone? I like the STG44 the most. Perfect recoil. Second comes the PPSh 41 SMG. Superb firepower.

Eh, either a G41, K98, or Mosin Nagant. The more bullets per clip, the less I seem to hit anything. I'm most accurate with bolt-actions but I get about the same about of kills with semis.

I've never played this game, so bear with me here:
Is this game teamwork centered, or isn't it - does one need to capture a flag or something like that?
Is this game infantry centered, or does this simply depend on the map one plays? How realistic is the infantry combat ?
Is that nice free-playing pass also available for those without steam?
:balloon2:
edyzmedieval
06-10-2007, 22:25
You need to get Steam. Just a nice 1.5MB program. And the game is about 1.8GB.
It's teamwork centered, and you need to get some strategic points on the map, which need at least 4-5 guys to get, not just one. Some maps are only infantry, and some maps only tank, because they are very large.
Bob the Insane

Been playing... Graphics are a little dated, but not bad... Levels can be huge (for a shooter)...
the 50 player servers are awesome... Battles can be spectacular with tanks and infantry and fixed AT guns and artillery and tracer fire everwhere...
So far so good...
Alexander the Pretty Good

Is this game teamwork centered, or isn't it - does one need to capture a flag or something like that?
Battles are won by capturing or defending objectives, which requires your team to have more people than the enemy around the objective. It can require a lot of teamwork to do this, especially if you need to deal with tanks and obstacles as well as infantry and machine guns. You can't do it all yourself.
Is this game infantry centered, or does this simply depend on the map one plays? How realistic is the infantry combat ?
The game is more infantry centered than vehicle, but that is largely map-dependent. There are three kinds of maps - infantry-only, tank-only, and combined arms. The first two are self-explanatory, but in CA maps, infantry tend to be more important than tanks, that is, objectives can be accomplished in spite of the best efforts of tankers. Which makes sense. Tank support makes it much easier for ground-pounders, though.
The combat itself, while limited in realism (it is a computer game) is the most accurate game available except Armed Assault or Operation Flashpoint. It's in some ways similar to those games.
Somebody Else
06-11-2007, 20:22
In terms of weaponry - it's all about the Stg44 in close in maps, the Kar98 Scoped in wider maps, and the moible artillery piece in tank maps.
(N.B. Ironsights are for numbnuts who can't afford a proper sighting unit)
The Spartan (Returns)

STG44 is great! Remember you can switch fire to semi-auto with it. So far I haven't seen anyone use an AT-Gun.

edyz - I can't think of a more realistic infantry combat game other than those two. Care to drop some names?
And I got to be sniper yesterday. Couldn't hit anything, so I gave it up. Then got to sniping with my Mosin and got some very nice long range kills. :laugh4:

Sniper is sweet... Just got to adjust for bullet drop. It really helps if you are prone with the weapon in a supported position...
You are right, the dymanic between SMGs, MGs and rifles has been tweaked just so that all weapons rule their own niche. There are no bad weapons so far in my experience, just the wrong weapon for the job at hand...

I guess it might be a per server kind of thing, but I have notice people can get a bit peaved if you jump in a tank with them... Didn't have that issue on BF2...
I guess it might be a per server kind of thing, but I have notice people can get a bit peaved if you jump in a tank with them... Didn't have that issue on BF2...
Yeah, it's the BF2 syndrome.
People don't like it when you get into the same tank as them since they know you will screw up and get both of you killed like not stopping when you need to stop etc.
That's why pretty much all tanks only got 1 guy in them.
If there is 2 then the 2nd one man the machine gun thus doesn't affect the driver/gunner.
Personally I do exactly the same.
So many times have I had a co-pilot who don't shoot at the enemy or keep driving even tho I'm yelling him to stop. There is only so much of that you can take before you go solo.
Anyway, my favorite weapon is on average the rifle(mauser/mosin). It's just fits most of the time. Even on close combat maps you can get a nice amount of kills with a rifle(as long as you know how to use it of course).
But I wouldn't say no to the sniper rifles or the Stg44.
Also if you can find the prime spot, the MG42. Nothing is more fun then just opening up fire with that one and just watch the russians fall like bowling pins.

If you're on a good server, with good people, you can tank well with others. Usually on a public server this isn't possible.

Man, I love this game! Haven't had so much fun in a MP game since pre 2.0 America's Army!! :2thumbsup:
My favorite weapon is definately the bolt action rifles, though they're not that good when you go indoors...
Had a great moment on one of the bigger maps (can't remember the name, but it's in snow with a bridge and last cap for the Russians is in a village) yesterday. Made a long shot at a small pixel sticking out over a hill, aiming a bit above to compensate for bullet drop. Shot and nothing happened so at first I thought I missed but then shortly after the kill message popped up... guess the bullet took some time travelling over there LOL! :laugh4:
Awesome! :2thumbsup:

I got the game too now! It's great, but I haven't gotten around to playing too much yet. So far, 3 online matches with 2 objective captures and 3 kills, and 3 offline practise mode matches. Could anyone point me in the direction of any particularly good servers in Europe? To begin with, I would prefer one with mostly newbies.

Do you guys have xfire?
I'm Ghost908 on xfire.
RO is a fantastic game. I like all maps, but I'm a tank guy mostly. I've been researching how to angle the tank to deflect most of the enemies AP rounds. I've also gotten good at finding the weak spots on most tanks.
Overall, a fantastic game.

Thanks, I'll check them out!
I think I'm getting the hang of the game now. Although my aim and reaction speed (have to remember crouch+iron sight+aim/counter drift+make sure my bolt action rifle was prepared after the last shot) still need some more working on, I notice that many that were superior to me in shooting failed to take full advantage of the terrain, and as a result I managed to reach the top half of the scoreboard yesterday, and on one server, I even got the top ranking on my team in one map (Berezhina) as a Russian tank commander, but I think most of the good players must have left by then . Anyhow, this is one of the many reasons I like this game: aiming and reaction speed are not everything, and a slow thinking person like myself actually stands a chance, at least in the larger maps ~:)
Using the terrain and the items on the map to your advantage is a key to winning. That's what I like about the game.
Everything can be used to hide behind or use it as a support for your weapon.
Unlike most games where you have fixed machine gun positions, you can set one up anywhere you please.
Adds a nice level of tactics to the game.
Oh guys, by the way, I have a guest pass if anyone wants to try the game free for 3 weeks. All you need is steam. Let me know your email address if you want to give RO a try and I'll send you a pass.
Can point out that I got 2 guest passes so they are up for grabs for those that wish it.

Does anyone have any tips on using the A-T Gun??? It seems useless!!!
Does anyone have any tips on using the A-T Gun??? It seems useless!!!
It's far from useless. I was destroying tanks from 500+ meters just a few a minutes ago.
You have to find the weak spots on the tanks. It is extremely effective against older models that have weak armor. If you are firing at say, a Panzer III or IV, get yourself perpendicular to the tank and fire away. If you can, try to hit the sides and back as the weakest armor is there.
Now, the newer tanks are a bit harder. The Tiger I and the Panther's armor is extremely thick at the front so the AT rifle won't do anything. You have to hit them in the sides and rear perpendicularly.
The AT rifle takes a lot of practice to master, but once you do, it's a great weapon.
This website might help also. It gives the stats on tanks and shows where their weak points are:

Hey all fellow RO players! Anyone snipe? At Danzig I got 12 kills in 1 round.
At one point this Axis sniper was a freak! Sniping everyone. Whats worst, is that we couldn't find him. When we finally found his position, he started counter-sniping our sniper.
This axis sniper choose the most unlikely sniping locations, far away, no high ground, and only revealed his head to snipe.
Anyone a good sniper? (BTW share your RO experiences here!)
FesterShinetop
07-05-2007, 19:44
I don't snipe... just don't have the patience for it I guess. I mostly just run around with a bolt action rifle. Though a few days ago I tried out tanking with a friend while we both were on TS... man that was fun as well and pretty intense! Had a blast, though we were blasted to pieces most of the time :laugh4:
The Spartan (Returns)

Through out all all my RO experience, I only tried tanking once. It seems to intimidating. (Tried it kinda liked it!)
The problem though is that somone always take sniper before I do!
The problem though is that somone always take sniper before I do!
Yeah and usually just run around pretending to be a regular soldier instead of doing what a sniper is suppose to do which is to kill people from a distance.
I'm usually quite good with a sniper rifle.
Always use the bolt action rifles, I can't hit anything with the semis.
One things I have noticed is that the enemy has a huge problem trying to sneak up on me while in sniping position.
I usually predict them coming or in some rare cases, see them come.
The Spartan (Returns)
07-06-2007, 02:08
Yea, it's annoying to see unskilled sniper, I look at their scores and think, "I could have done wayyy better!"
You can predict them comin'? How? You can hear them or what? Sixth sense?
Nah, it's just me spending way too much time on this game that I can predict what people do.
After 2-3 kills they know that there is a sniper in the area and they know where he is.
And since everyone loves to kill the sniper they will naturally come for you.
So after 2-3 kills I just switch to the sidearm, look behind my back and 98% of the time sure enough, there is an enemy trying to bayonet me.
Of course sometimes they never come for you.
Once as a russian sniper on Danzig, we captured the bridges fast(never died), I ran to the building covering Langemarcht and there I remained for the duration of the map. I only left the spot from time to time to get more ammo.
The germans never once tried to do a proper attack on me. An MG tried sometimes to kill me from the diner but I just sniped him back.
I must have gotten like 40-50 kills that time.
FesterShinetop

Was playing Axis on Danzig a few days ago and the Allied had a killer sniper, this guy was really good... I tried to get a few shots at him with my bolt action, but didn't succeed... after a while indeed everyine in our team started asking where our sniper was... he was probably running around like a regular soldier like you said TB666. Something like that can be quite annoying and really hamper your team. :furious3:

If your looking for good servers, look out for TDP 'The Damned Priests' who are German/EU server. Nice players and generally cooperative with vehicles. Also the SPLAT clan, which is the server I frequent the most on. The players are mainly EU/UK and are really excellent for getting on VT and chatting with. Really fun, excellent players, and so much teamwork its like being in a clan..when your not :2thumbsup:
I usually pick my guns based on the maps and whether its defence or offense.
Big maps defense = Rifles, MGs, Snipers
Small maps defense = SMGs, Semi Autos
Big maps offense = Semi Autos, SMGs, MG support (and lots of smoke!)
Small maps offense = SMGs
Just some general tips if your new.
Make sure you get inside the capzone at all times, in defence or attack. Once your in the cap, THEN you can camp as much as you like.
If your tanking, always angle your tank at 1'o clock so enemy shells bounce of the armor plating
NEVER, drive off in a transport vehicle on your own. Wait until it gets a few people in it...its damn annoying when players drive off!
Make sure you check your map for artillery. Especially if you hear the shells pumping out in the distance.
Picking up enemy weapons in hostile territory works a charm. The enemy won't get wise quickly that your popping shots off in their rear.
If you pick a specialized role (Squad Leader, Engineer), please make sure you stick to teamplay and help with smoke, and destroying obstacles as your first priority!
If you hear a teammate calling for ammo (usually an MG'er) run upto them and press 'G' to re-supply them.
