View Full Version : Map sizes even larger than we thought!
All of the most recent previews linked from the official site indicate that the maps are now absolutely massive!
We had originally been told that the default map size for MTW would be the same size as the "large" custom maps in Shogun. All four of the new previews (including a direct quote from M. DePlater) indicate that the maps will be DOUBLE THAT!
That means that there should never again be an issue with the "Red Zone", not to mention the available real estate to manouver on! As one of the communities map editors, I can't wait to get my hands on it!
Not sure if you'll want to move this to editing Kuma, but I felt that this was the best place for now.

I hope that each faction will have some units that can keep good morale away from the general. If so, with these huge maps, ambushes, guerilla type hit and run, effective scouting, would become valid tactics.

Obake-San, sounds good. Hours of creative fun with the textures eh?
I have always felt that armies tire far to quickly by just marching. Couple this with the fact that (MP) you can see your enemy on the mini map there's not much chance to manoeuvre a few units around the enemy. Then there's the worry that if they can't see their general's standard they start to lose morale.
I hope this will be better in MTW. No matter if maps are twice as big they are still not that big when compared to scale of units. In other words, my men have never marched more than the equivalent of half a mile, even on large maps.
Personally I like the idea of ambush and hit and run tactics, it adds more variation to gameplay.

Gah!
Any who attempt the construction of an MTW Ironing Bored will be reported to the Gosik of Aubochon for elimination.
The Vortex of Oblivion, on the other hand .... that would be a map worth making.

I hope if we are deployed in the center of a huge map that i don't see defenders marching to the back of the map finding the biggest hill to camp on. This means i get to spend fives minutes just marching to them and the whole map seems wasted. I guess we might need something on big maps we have to occupy to prevent this. Once we occpy this area we should get a moral bouns or reinforcements. This is just another crazy idea to prevent massive hill camping.

the biggest bonus to larger maps is ambushes and line of sight. the radar map will NOT show armies that arent within its own line of sight. they dont show on the radar map, not even the general unit.

Of course if you have the legendary explorer Marco Polo with your army it is easy to find the enemy as they have to play his game.

With such large maps we may see more of the strategic marching and countermarching.. or at least we could hypothesize that we will..

Are we really shure the battlemaps will be so much bigger?
Weve read in several previews, that there would be a different map for each region depending on from where you invade it. So when you think about it, each region could have 1 huge map, but a battle could be limited to 1/4 of it.......??????

i recently started making some maps for MI and realised how much time must go into this, surely these new maps that are so big are gonna take ages http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif
do you think that a 56k modem might struggle to run a smooth MP game with all the added detail? especially since 6v6s will be able to be played (im guessing, 12 factions though http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif)
and also i had an idea about handicap maps?
where maps are flat like ironing bored but each map with a slighty increased gradient, would be interesting you think?

They already said that the max will be 4v4,Baz.

because of the way CA handles graphics and net code, the size of the map shldnt directly affect a game being played by a 56k modem. if you can handle the resources in a 4v4 single player, you'll most likely be able to handle it in multi as well.
now, that isnt saying that by having a 56k modem your games are going to be smooth and lag free; it simply means that graphics wont be the major cause of any lag.

the best solutions to wasted marches and edge/cornercamping is that maps are better designed.
make all edges and corners lower than teh land in the centre
in teh case defenders has some hills, give the attackers several less steep slopes
try my own maps for the example...
Khentii Aimag
Dorngobi Aimag
Sukhbataar Aimag
slopes but in all cases fair
I tend to agree with AMP. I think that this bigger map size would be useless (in MP) unless there is a change in the current system of deployment zones accompanied by a fog of war during deployment.
BTW, does anyone know anything about MP deployment zones???
