What are they cause I'm getting a major upgrade and I want to know what to get.

If it's a "major upgrade" you should be fine.. I believe CA designs their games to be high-end but not so demanding that only half of people can play them.. my 3-year-old POS is struggling, but even it runs everything fine up to the Battle of Jaffa.

hmm - i dont think so.

I use an Athlon 1400, 512MB DDR ram, 64MB Gforce3 @AGP4 (5.1 plat card for sound)..

This will dandily run the campaign battles at 1024x768 in widescreen (my favoured layout) and copes fine with 3 forces. (i have run it above 1600 resolution [ive a tasty 21" monitor] but the units are too small then imo] (I always play with snall unit sizes anyway)

GIve it a lot of explosions, catapult, falling walls and/or fog etc and it goes sluggish.

Having said that the game hasn't been fully optimised yet so...

but those figures in the readme file look a little low to me... I would suggest the "ideal" as the recommended tbh.

Well everyone knows that graphical detail reduces performance thus play 800x600 and you would run fine with any computer that is 1Ghz+ with 128MB ram.

With my 333 I can have one peasant and a tree. If I don't mind sluggishness, I can turn on environmental effects - thus getting two swallows for the tree, and maybe a couple of coconuts...allowing my peasant to imagine that he is cavalry...not unlike how in a few months I will be sitting in front of my blank computer screen pretending to be playing MTW.

At least my PC can handle playing a CD...so I can pop in "Carmina Burana" for the mood effects...

it runs on my 466mhz computer okish! on 640x480 resoloution....however the amazed look on my face was shattered when i got to the last battle and it ran slower then a tortoise with no legs trying to go up a metal hill with the most powerful magent stuck up its ass http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

What goes on in the battle of Jaffa that makes it so slow?

Why should a 500 be slow if it has gobs of memory? GAH!

Why ask why? Drink Duff dry!

In the year 1283 king Peter of Aragon (in northern Spain) and Charles of Anjou (Lord of provinces in France and Italy) journeyed north into the Normandy territories of King Edward of England to duel for the overlordship of Sicily (the Sicilians were none too keen on this) despite the explicit remonstrances of Pope Martin who had faint hopes that God would make the correct decision in a trial by battle. Each would be accompanied by 100 knights and the forces were to meet on June 1. However they had not agreed the hour so King Peter rode into the lists in the morning, Charles the evening. Each claimed victory and rode off into the sunset. (From S Runciman's The Sicilian Vespers, a story of feigned crusades, pet Popes, Byzantine intrigue, and why it is unwise to tax Sicilians) Now this is the kind of scenario that all of us tiny CPU owners desire!
Personally I'm worried about the more detailed sprites being a brake on the sheer size of battles. If TW3 still is limited to 16 units-a-side (ie if they aren't cobbling together a new engine as we speak) then one of the main grab factors of the game will be disappearing down an exquisitely rendered plughole. I want 20,000 men dying for me, and if that means they're bitmaps then so be it! (disappears into the world of tabletop gaming amid a puff of brimstone)
Jaguara if you upgrade you can make the peasant into a falconer and one swallow into a peregrine falcon, thus creating a handy mini game. In the expansion pack Sims: MTW you'll then be able to go hunting with lordly pals and get into a clinch with the hunky animal rights protester.

Well it was playing smoothly but it was terribly laggy in the last battle!!!
This is more demanding than Max Payne.
I also use a GF3 with the 28.90 drvers a 1.06Ghz Athlon 256MB DRR and it was very slow during that battle when all units were engaged!!!

Agreed...it lags like hell. I've a 1.6Mhz Pentium, with 64Mb vid card and 256Kb of rdram...I've never had a lagging problem until this demo http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

BTW, rebooting will clear this up for a while http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif Makes you think it's gobbling up all,the sys ram doesn't it.

Haha....... I have spotted your problem Black Ship....... you have "1.6 Mhz Pentium"...........1... . 6..... MEGA..... Hz. I hope you mean Ghz, cause your computer is slow as hell.

i have 700 Mhz 128MB RAM + minimum requerements and all battles work just fine.

I have a 500 mhz with 384 SDR ram and the entire demo ran smooth as silk. Even when the camel jockeys came over the big hill at Jaffa. No lag here m8's. To top it all off, I only have a 32mb video card to boot.!

Oh, forgot, I ran it at the resolution up from the 800x600, whichever that one is. 1000 something by 700 something...

Anyone try the game with an 8 MB video card yet? I think it says that is the minimum...

I tried it out on a test system I have thats at the minimum spec and the demo looked a bit dodgy - I wouldn't worry too much though as I guess they'll be working on optimising it before release

I guess MTW doesnt run that good in WindowsXP. my 2 cents
