I just read this thread (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=77905) that explains how custom music can be used in M2TW. With that in mind, I'm looking to make use of some custom selections as a new game soundtrack. What suggestions does anyone have for the campaign map or the battle map? Note that I'm trying to stick with a medieval game feel, so I don't really want anything modern-sounding. Classical selections are preferred.

I don’t know how to customize the game music, but what I do is I change the audio options: game music and set it to mute, leaving the rest of the sounds intact or slightly lower. Then, I run music that I downloaded off of I-tunes in the background. Maybe a little classical music, dance beats work too, or perhaps some hard alternative rock for battles. Rob Zombie’s not my favorite, but when in battle, it works quite well.

Try doing a search on iTunes (even if you don't buy from them, you can hear samples). There are pieces by Hildegard von Bingen there, mostly female canticles. Look up Gregorian chants, of course. Your music selections for the medieval period will be limited if you want authenticity. If that is not an issue, you could always go for Wagner (Ride of the Valkyries) or Gustav Mahler's symphonies for something Teutonic. Bach is always good (Brandenburg Concertos) or Vivaldi (The Four Seasons).

Don't forget Corvux Covax. You know, the band used in that France vs HRE movie in the "AWESOME MOVIE" thread ? I ended up leeching most of their stuff off Teh Internets, it's ... a bit weird. But interesting. And it would obviously fit your bill.

As for more "classical" classical music, well, I like to say that Wagner is classical heavy metal - huge brass sections, lots of timbals going "KRAKAKOOM !", very energetic, if a bit immature stuff. No wonder Hitler loved him - Wagner really played on the most basic of emotions, and he did so with a 10 ton hammer, which is why his music is so powerfull I suppose.

But all that said, I don't really know that Bach, Wagner, Mussorgsky or insert-your-favorite-dead-white-man-name-here would really fit Medieval, apart from orchestrated videos. Gameplay ? Not so much.

Oooh, Mahler and Wagner... good suggestions. Most times I hear Wagner it evokes visions of battle, so that is nearly perfect lol. And yeah non-medieval classical is great - it's just modern electric music that I'm trying to avoid. While I like a lot of it, it decidedly will not work as a soundtrack to this sort of game, at least not for me. I'll also be sure to give Corvux Covax a listen.

Other more mello classical sounds will of course make fine strat map soundtrack material... that is relatively easy as there's so much of it available. I think I will primarily use Beethoven's 6th and 8th symphonies. 6 especially is wonderful. His 5th gets all the credit what with the overused famous lick and all, but 6 IMO is vastly superior, especially from a storytelling aspect. Classical that's consistently heavy enough for battle is a bit more troublesome though. I looked at some stuff from the Classical Thunder collections, and some of it is powerful enough, so maybe I'll spring for that as part of my custom soundtrack. Maybe I'll get some Holst in there too. Of course I'm also still taking ideas, this is nowhere near a finished project yet!

Heh. Wagner (esp. Götterdämmerung) and Stravinsky for the classic lover and for the battles. You might want to take a look at old MTW threads, for example
