View Full Version : Ptolemaioi AAR - Help Me Finish!

Among my friends and family I have become notorious for not finishing things. Other than books, once I start something I quickly run out of motivation and give up. For example, in a game like World Of Warcraft, or Diablo 2, I often have 15 lvl 20-30 characters, because I bore quickly of one character and start another.

Sadly, the same goes with Rome. I have started a campaign with every faction in EB, RTR, and Vanilla Rome, and have finished a grand total of zero. The closest I ever came was with the Scipii (green romans) in Vanilla, where my empire stretched from Italy to the Bosphorans, and I don't remember why I stopped playing it.

Well, I have always had a horrendous go of things when it comes to Successor (sp?) factions. I have played Epirote and Makedoninan campaigns in which, after conquering the Hellas, have been unable to defeat swarming Germans, Seleukids, and Romans in even battles.

So I decided that my first ever finished campaign should be with a Pike-reliant army. I therefore chose the Ptolemaioi, because a) they have a cool starting position and b) they have the awesome Kleruchoi Phalangitai. So, in order that I may finish a campaign, I am asking for your help. I will pledge to post updates about my campaign, and in return for my "work" I simply ask that you promise to constantly heckle and bother me if I do not update this AAR often. I give you permission to bother me in every thread or post if I fail my responsibilites, and even go so far as to flood my PM box. I really want to finish at least one campaign before EB 2 (yeah aiming high) so this is what I am resorting too.

In order to prevent me from getting frustrated and quiting early. I will keep this a short-and-sweet AAR, with mostly battle aftermaths, small updates, and an occasional full battle report. The campaign is already underway, I am still in the 260~ BC area, and have conquered Antioch and Damaskos.

Chapter 1:The Syrian Wars

With the war with the Seleucid Empire gaining momentum, the battle for Syria is at hand. Thrice has our ancestors been forced to flee Syria, and thrice we have returned. Our King Ptolemaios Philadelphios promises that this will be the last conquest of Syria.

The Battle Of Tarsos

Spring, 265 BC, Tarsos

The Seleucids have made the first move. By force marching an army around our defenses and attacking Tarsos of the north, they have caught us off guard. Our great Pharoah, in his ultimate wisdom, gathered his forces following the capture of Damaskos, and linking up with reinforcements from Antiochea, marched upon the intruding force.

The battle took place on an open plain south of Tarsos, as the Seleucid army turned to face the relieving force. As the battle commenced, the two armies formed up in their battle lines.

https://img515.imageshack.us/img515/4103/tarsos2cw6.png

As the lines closed, the auxiliary archers from Crete loosed their arrows upon the Seleucid ranks.

https://img232.imageshack.us/img232/4449/tarsos3vq6.png

As the battle lines met, the reinforcements from Tarsos arive and begin to hassle to Seleucid rear. The Phalanx engage each other in the center, with our more numerous Pezhetarioi quickly gaining the advantage. The Galatikoi Kleruchoi smashed into the center of the line, determined to hack apart the opposing Phalanx.

Our brave Pharoah then quickly disposed of the enemy calvary, and wheeled around to assault the rear of the Seleucid right flank.

https://img113.imageshack.us/img113/5166/tarsos5nl8.png

Fearing the power of the almighty King and Pharoah, the Seleucid right flank quickly turned and fled, with our troops in pursuit. As the rest of the army closed in the remnants of the Seleucid center, the battle was already won. Now it was just a matter of how long it would take for Seleucids to realize this.

https://img235.imageshack.us/img235/8380/tarsos7wc1.png

Upon seeing the dissolution oh half of his army, the cowardly Seleucid genereal attempted to flee, but was impaled on the lances of the Podromoi.

https://img512.imageshack.us/img512/8240/tarsos8qg0.png

With their leader gone and their morale crumbling, the entire Seleucid force routed and fled for their lives. Casting down their weapons as their desperatley attemped to flee the our calvary, they were ruthlessly cut down and scattered to the hills.

Looks good :). What are the plans of the Pharaoh, in overcoming the Aching Seleukids?

Griever14206

House rules huh? I'd have to say I probably don't have any. The only hard and fast policy that I follow in my campaigns in that I auto_win against any rebel fleet that attacks my own. I never understood why they are quite so large, as EB states that one actual unit to meant to represent an entire fleet, and the thought of 4 pirate fleets working together seems odd. I am also using Redmeth's money script and the Force Diplomacy mod, which I will only use to force a faction into peace when it seems ludicrous that they would continue to fight.

My plan was originally to take most of Syria (which has happened) and then bottleneck the Seleucids at the bridge outside of Antiochea. When I saw the pittly garrison in Edessa, I simply had to take it. I've also raised a "native" army made up entirely of Machimoi Phalangitai, Pandotopoi, and the native Aigyptian calvary (can't remember the name) which I will use to conquer the African provinces below my own.

My plan is to then to rid Asia Minor of the Seleukia, before blizting Seleukia herself. I have already made alliances with Pontus and Hayasdan and am supplying them with a decent tribute, so that they will keep the Seleucid armies occupied while I subjugate the african provinces, and so far it seems to be working.

Chapter 1:The Syrian Wars con'd

Following the great victory as Tarsos, the Pharoah and his army marched north and intercepted a small Seleucid force, no doubt reinforcements for the army sent to capture Tarsos. After several hours of cat and mouse, we mananged to force the enemy to give fight, whereupon they were surrounded and slaughtered. Perhaps the greatest thing to come from this victory was the capture of an entire battalion of Agryspidai, this is surely a stinging blow for Antiochos and his men!

Several weeks later, in a small camp located near the Orontes River, Ptolemaios Philadelphos and his war council met to discuss their next course of action. Reports have come in from couriers that the Aigyptian army under Satyrion Helios has moved into Nubian territory, and is closing upon Meroe uncontested.

The Council then recieved reports of the small garrison in Edessa, just east of the Orontes River. Abandoning the original plan to defend Anticohea until the Nubian territores were subjugated, the brave Pharoah led his men in an assault upon the small settlement.

https://img236.imageshack.us/img236/8207/edessa1rh9.png

The Siege Of Edessa

Fall, 264 BC, Seleucid Province of Edessa

The Pharoah quickly organized his infantry into three attack groups. One group, would attempt to ram Edessa's main gates, and draw the defenders into the crowded streets. Then, two other assault groups would batter their way through the western and eastern portions of the wall, and surround the defenders in their own city.

Dust rose as the Pharaoh's men wasted no time assault the pitiful walls of Edessa, and they met no resistance outside of the settlement.

https://img294.imageshack.us/img294/7331/edessa4vv3.png

After a short time, the main gates of Edessa were battered down, and the Ptolemaic forces poured through gaps in the walls, overwhelming the small garrison.

https://img505.imageshack.us/img505/4602/edessa8ib3.png

In a desperate attempt to breakout of the city, the commander led a charge straight into the men attacking the gates. At first, the inexperienced Pandatopoi gave way to the charge, but the arrival of the Galatikoi Kleruchoi quickly turned the tide, and the general found himself surrounded and unable to move towards the gates, while his loyal retainers died all around him.

https://img171.imageshack.us/img171/156/edessa9mw3.png

The commander made a run to escape to the city square and organize a defense there, but his horse was hit by a javelin in the throat, toppling the beast and throwing him to the ground. The Pandatopoi quickly surrounded the brave commander and skewered him.

As Philadelphos himself marched upon the defenders gathered in the square, the remaining resistance quickly threw down their weapons and submitted to the Pharoah's will. The Aigyptian army cheered loudly, and began to chant "To Seleukia!".

Great update. Because of the conquest of Edessa, the heartlands of the Seleukids are suddenly vulnerable. We will see what course the Pharaoh will decide on.

Although he has no Pyramids to construct, he needs to labour on this AAR further. :whip: :whip:

Great AAR love the screenshots...always tricky to catch the moment the general is killed. I particulary like that screenshot of the Selucid King being killed. If you may entertain some questions though. How do you organize your troops? Is it one long line? Do you use light troops for flanking? Where do you place your best troops? Do you keep them in reserve or place them in the center?

As the forum embodiment of the Greatest Seleucid King Ever (or something like that), I demand that you skewer my ancestors to pieces! Seleukia for Ptolemy or else it'll be me on my way to Alexandria instead! :beam:

Truth is, I'm just getting back to RTW/EB as well. It's such a wonderful game and 8.x is an incredible improvement over 7.x, so I really don't know why I stopped. Curiously enough, I'm so scared of the Seleucid micromanagement nightmare that I never dared take them outside of Vanilla. :sweatdrop:
