how about something with a little more political intrigue in the campaign mode? like i was thinking, take a well-known/interesting historical situation -- the one i have specifically in mind is the russian revolution.
around the time of the rr, there were so many different political groups/factions/splinters, whatever you want to call them -- each of these (bolshevik, menshevik, social democrat, anarchist, etc. etc.) could serve as a "clan" ala STW/MI/WE. this is sort of a half-baked idea, but the more i think about it, the more i feel like it could be turned into something really cool (but maybe what i'm looking for would be a diff. game than *the* STW/MI/WE specific format/characteristics.
basically, to me, i think it would be cool to see this type of a game done on a smaller scale than the sort of epic, napoleon-esque/ruler of feudal japan, supreme master/ lord-over-all scenario that is very very common for pc games. like what about the period of the 1960s when the african states were hammering out what would be the new political shape of the continent (now that the european colonizers were ditching out). anyone who knows a little of the history of that situation could see how there are many ways to formulate it in a clan vs. clan vs. clan style game, ala STW. and think of the different types of battle maps -- jungle, arid plain, grassland, savanna! to me, this is a very exciting thing to think about. and, unlike doing a more "modern" scenario that would greatly complicate the units/weapons situation (just with the sheer numbers and diversity required to achieve any degree of historical accuracy, which in a game like STW is a very important element, IMO), these political/tribal conflicts for control of the newly-free african territories were fought with smallish armies (a lot of guerilla-type stuff) and relatively primitive weaponry (i mean, yeah, the US, USSR, china, south africa, cuba, etc. were pouring weapons and aid into these conflicts, but its not like anybody was getting an a-bomb or something). i don't know, i think the idea could work, and i would love something like that.
maybe these ideas are not compatible with the attitude/style/direction of the total war series? what do you think? tenable?
god, so many exciting possibilities. i wish i could just *make* a computer game (maybe i should try to design one). what an exciting thing to have to think about. ok enough gushing, but thinking about these things is truly exciting. i want games! i want historical accuracy! i want nuance! i want challenge! down with reflex!--up with intellect! give me something, people, i need it, and that's no joke.
peace,
